Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7

Not a huge fan of the pick. Im fine with going out and getting a quality backup but a 4th round pick is a lot to spend on someone who's value to us is all based on uncertainties. He might see the field IF RGIII gets hurt. He might bring us some good draft picks in a trade IF he gets on the field and plays well, and thats only IF RGIII gets hurt. I'd have rather filled a need in the 4th, lord knows we have many, and waited til the end of the draft to pick up a QB. Would've loved to have taken a late round flyer on Kellen Moore or Chase Keenum and if they didn't work out, then take a QB next year. Kirk Cousins doesn't seem all that special to me that it was necessary we spend our 4th on him. Passing on Kirk wouldn't have hurt RGIII's confidence either.

Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7

I've heard someone say that Cousins is more pro ready than Robert Griffin. To me it doesn't matter. I think the draft selection of Cousins was a good and decent one. Does anybody remember what the level of QB was like in 2011 for the Washington Redskins? Rex Grossman was signed to a 1 year deal. That said, RG3 is taken with the 2nd overall pick in the NFL draft because the quarterback play left much to be desired last season. Kirk Cousins was projected to be a second round draft choice. Why was he still there by the early fourth round? No one ever knows how an NFL draft will play out. With a prospect the level of Cousins, you can't pass on him if he's available. So, Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen decided it was in the best interest of the Redskins to take him. Good bye and good riddance, John Beck.

The draft selection of Cousins in the early 4th round was the right decision for the Redskins.

Most 4th round picks are lucky as hell to make the squad so how is a 4th round pick "a lot to spend on someone"?

Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7

I'm so confused by this so called controversy.

The redskins when the off season began had no long-term solution to QB at any of the 3 spots. Rex couldn't start, Beck couldn't be a back up and there really wasn't a No. 3 last year. So that's two QBs that have to be found this year to be a solution.

The ideal QB situation is your starter, veteran and then young development player. It's clear that's exactly what they got with RGIII, Rex and Cousins.

So now, if RGIII has some sort of injury, we aren't stuck thinking about just Rex. Do you guys want Rex as your long-term back up? They have someone who is athletic, who was rated very highly (so it was a steal), someone who fits the system, stuck with a BPA mentality... it goes on and on.

There is no controversy. They drafted 3 O-linemen and 2 secondary players -- they still met their needs with at least adding some talent.

I could careless if Cousins or RGIII was our Super Bowl MVP. Let the best man win.

No fourth round pick should be drafted with the expectation of filling a need anywhere, especially as a starter. A 4th round pick is basically a sleeper pick from the perspective of the FO drafting the player. They are not picked for immediate impact. They will compete for a depth spot, and hopefully develop into something 1 or 2 years later.

I'd agree with that but finding depth at QB could have been done differently, especially when depth at other positions is more pressing. Guys like Bobby Massie and Joe Adams could have developed into big contributors, where as Kirk may never take a snap if RGIII pans out like we'd imagine. I'd just hate to see us miss out on a good player because we drafted an insurance plan.

The two secondary players came in the second round though. I could argue our best secondary pick up was an UDFA. The only problem i have is that the Cousins pick is that we could've used that pick to fill our needs more effectively, not the fact that it was Cousins himself. I'm fine with the QB situation now, I'm actually happy with it. I just wish we would've taken a safety, corner, or lineman in the 4th and a young development QB in the 7th.

Yeah, according to YOUR scouting reports. My guess is the other teams reports didn't quite jive with yours.

I agree. Bobby Massie was touted as a 2nd or 3rd round talent but fell well short of that... Probably for a reason. Also, from everything that I read, Massie wasn't a ZBS type tackle. The fact that we didn't take Sanders is more surprising to me, but the coaching staff probably didn't think too highly of him. After all, they had a week to scout him in the senior bowl and apparently weren't that enamored.

Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7

Personally, I'm 50/50 on this pick and pretty much agree with lots from both sides. One idea that I think is totally absurd is the opinion that the Skins should have drafted a "bad" QB to groom as backup? Makes no sense... you gotta get the best players on the team as possible. And its not like anybody was saying Cousins is the next Aaron Rodgers.

While I like the pick to have hopefully two really good QBs who are YOUNG and not passed their prime like McNabb was, I might have preferred like many here that they would have drafted where there was more need and then get another QB in the later rounds or next year.

BTW... Skip Bayless is NOT an idiot and First Take is an excellent program for those who actually watch the whole show and not just short video clips. However, Skip was definitely wrong on this and made a big deal out of nothing imo. And to bring in the race card where there is none with this issue was really ridiculous as both Mangini and Stephen A. Smith told him.

A 4th rounder becomes "a lot to spend" when you have a rookie quarterback (or two) to go along with no first round picks in the next two drafts

What ifs can be played with every prospect. No prospect is doomed to failure or guaranteed for success on draft day because there is simply no way to know that. It's that inbetween called "possible"; every pick is based on measuring the probability of someone panning out. They believed Kirk was the guy with the better probability to make it rather than guys at another position.

That doesn't change the quality of players you find in that round. They are still the lesser prospects, no matter how much you or the team wants them to be 1st round caliber players.

Which is all the more reason to get the quality depth now for the most important position on the team. Now, rather than trying to find a decent backup quarterback in future drafts, we can focus on skill positions and linemen. All the while developing a solid backup.

If Cousins reaches his potential he'll be a better back-up then Grossman and ulitmately be tradeable commodity.
I've said it before I hope Cousin can become the back-up QB this year, it unlikey that a rookie QB wins the back-up job but it happens.

Doesn't change the quality but it changes the quantity. More picks = more chances to get good depth.

I guess I just feel that we should've focused on skill/lineman in the post RG3 rounds this year since we had a QB in the bag and skill/lineman depth became a more important need IMO

True, but his what ifs or might's are things like "he might bring us a good draft pick" or "he might get on the field" and not just "he might be good when he plays". We don't even know if he'll get a chance to play. It's like we have to get passed one uncertainty in order to get to another one.

Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7

look, if we really wanted massie, he would have been here. we had a 3rd round pick we could have used on him, or a 4th rounder. the FO said no thanks to that.

the last time the skins took two qbs, the late pick ended up starting a playoff game while the 1st round guy flopped out of the league. we got 3 linemen... would a 4th have made a huge difference? cousins will make the final 53, a 4th OL rookie probably wouldn't.

the overall talent level is higher this way. I don't get how the #2 QB spot is less important than the #4/#5 OG spot on a football team. injuries happen and john beck started games for us last year. that's really all the reason someone should need in regards to picking two QBs.

Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7

Cousins was definitely a steal in the round we got him. The quarterback position requires so much and when you're a team coming off a 5-11 that had two QBs toss 18 TDs and 24INTs combined, you have to not only upgrade the starter role, but the reserve role as well. I don't really agree with all of the criticism that Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan are receiving pertaining to drafting Cousins. Drafting Cousins was the right move to make.

The QB controversy has not even started yet but already there is one if that makes sense.Like I posted earlier, the MEDIA will jump on this and make it one if it kills them, thats what they do.
One analyst I head monday making fun of this pick was comparing it like this
My kids are hungry now,I can buy them food now to feed them or I can stick the money in mutual funds and try to make more money in the future.
Thats how I feel about this pick RIGHT NOW.I think we could have used the pick more wisely on something we need now.A lot of people are defending this pick saying we can turn it into more draft picks later.Who knows whos right, only time will tell
I think the only thing certain about this pick is that it will be played up by the media as much as it possibly can to turn this into a controversy, whether there is one or not.Any little thing that happens insignificant or not will be analized to death to make it a controversy
