Religious convictions should be a personal thing until the guys are "off the clock" i.e. not practicing, what not. Nothing's wrong with embracing your religion and even talking about it with some of the guys on a one on one or friendly basis, but its another thing for it to be all you ever talk about/trying to convert. Although in this situation, maybe it would'v been best for Shanahan to let that slide... |

If you're at work, you work. It's like when Victoria Jackson was on SNL telling everyone they were sinners and going to hell. You're there to tell jokes, tell jokes. You're there to kick the ball, kick the ball. |
there's a time and a place, why do you think they hate on tebow?
Because he's a shitty QB. :D I mean the thing with RG3 and Gibbs is I doubt they were in the locker room preaching the word of God. They were/are probably all football when it counted. What they do when their teammates aren't around and the cameras are off is their business. Everyone knows Gibbs is a devout Christian but on the field and in the locker room he was a Hall of Fame coach. I don't know what Gano did or didn't do but the moral of the story was it must've been upsetting to the some of the players. Gano wasn't that great of a kicker anyway. Religious beliefs or not, I don't think him getting cut was a huge loss. (Minus the fact we ended up with Cundiff ) |

Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
My feelings are mixed. Almost every single player thanks god as part of a celebration after a big play. I'm a religious person but I find it absurd and distracting. But the point is, it's hypocritical for players to be upset at one guy for talking about religion privately amongst the team when the same players make showy displays and point to heaven after a touchdown in front of 100 million people. What I'm getting at is football is overwhelmingly religious as it is. People should just be more tolerant. If gano is the best kicker available, it shouldn't matter what he believes or how much he talks about it. Judge him on his play and nothing else....
That said, for all we know gano is some freak bringing snakes into the locker room and trying to get team mates to sacrifice chickens before every game lol |

That sounds like a fable. If it's true, then the Redskins front office is pretty stupid. If players don't like it, all they have to do is tell Gano to shut the hell up. |

That sounded a bit absurd, but I asked them this morning if they ever said anything like that or if it's even true. The answer "Never. 100% not true. Zero chance of that." |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Seems like a lot of the Redskins I follow on Twitter are "openly religious", so this doesn't make much sense at all.

Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Gano is pretty hard core conservative and maybe not the most "open-minded" person from what I know...but again, according to them, not the reason he was let go and not the reason he's not coming back.

Well thats not what Chris Said on ESPN980. Check the ESPN980 Audio Vault - 10/7/2012 Chris Russell Post Game and start listening around the 6 minute mark. Al Michaels: Would Shanahan bring him (Cundiff) back? Do you think he'd swallow his pride and.. Russell: No, i dont think he will, because i dont think Mike likes him very much Al : Do you know why that is? What is it that he specifically doesnt like about him? Chris: i know some things. Hes frustrated with his consistency... and then there's other elements to it that i'm not quite sure if that, you know, necessarily belongs in this forum, but you know - Graham is a very religious person and i've heard some things that that irked some people. So you know, there's something to that i beleive. I don't know that absolutely 100% for sure, and i dont want to accuse somebody of something, but that is what i was told. |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Al Michaels on 980? Anyway, I don't know what to tell you. It's no secret MS doesn't like Gano, like he didn't like Atogwe. And it's not secret Gano is conservative/religious. But I asked "did you say Gano was cut and isn't coming back because he's too religious and it bothers the team" I can ask again

I definitely lose alot of respect for him for denying he said something on live radio. If you listen to it, its obvious he was uncomfortable talking about it. Maybe he broke someones confidence and is trying to do damage control. |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
If it's at all true then there has to be something more to it. Like he directly attacked a teammate for their lifestyle choice or something like that. But I seriously doubt it, because Gano never says a word
|
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Maybe Gano is a radical Santerian? It must get old coming back to your locker and finding chicken entrails and blood everywhere.

While I think that part may have irked Shanny, I seriously doubt he got rid of him because of that. Even CR hints at this being a rumor, but not sure he ties it to why Gano was cut. I think Gano was cut because he's too damn inconsistent and if he could be replaced by somebody equal that Mike liked, he would be. Now, maybe Mike disliked Gano on a personal level due to him being a preachy/openly religious. I can buy that. Either way, it's good info and thanks for sharing. :) |

No. He's a ES insider. His information is usually legit and matches most of what Smoot says. Most likely have the same sources. He does good break down on film with the all 22 footage. Either way, it's good info and thanks for sharing. :)
I honestly dont agree that Gano was THAT inconsistent. The blocks from last year were not his fault. In my opinion, he was the best we'd had in a while, but thats not saying much. Of the guys out there now, i think he's the best available - by a wide margin. I want Cundiff gone as much as the next guy, but i think Cundiff is better than any of the guys we're supposedly bringing in today. We may be "stuck" with Cundiff. |

I happen to agree with you. I was not in favor of cutting Gano for Cundiff. I didn't think it was a upgrade in any shape, form or fashion. This is one of the few mistakes Mike has made during his tenure (McNabb, Haslett, Cundiff,Danny Smith) that I haven't agreed with. |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Any chance that instead of Gano not trying out because of an issue between him and Shanahan, it has more to do with him being the default option and were just doing our due dilligence on other kickers first?
So if More, Brown, Forbath or whoever else might come in to kick doesnt look better than Gano, then Gano gets the job? Or is it offically over between the Skins and Gano at this point? Also i think there are limitations to how many guys you can have in to try out each week. Maybe 3 or so kickers plus some other routine workout guys we will never hear about have already filled the allowed amount? |

It's safe to say that Cundiff is on a burning hot seat. He knows he better not miss anymore close range field goals from here on out.

What? take a look at his stats. dude also had a propensity to kick the ball out of bounds on kickoffs. Clearly if he was consistent he would be here. We finally need to address this in the offseason. |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Gano had all of 2010 and 2011 to prove that he belonged on the team. Obviously Mike Shanahan's patience with him grew thinner and thinner. But I just didn't like how the job was taken away from Gano and handed so freely to Cundiff. Cundiff, seemingly the better option, never beat Gano in head to head competition for the kicking job.
