lol that's from a historical perspective and their immense hatred of Yankees fans. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. |
Darrell Green does not support Redskin name change
I moved from Rockville, Maryland to the West Coast 30 years ago, what keeps me a fan? The tradition, history, uniform, the team is like my family, identity. You take that away, you might as well root for no one.
Yup. You could swap our players with the dirty rotten cowboys tomorrow and once they put on the b and g they become my team. Granted this particular example would take some adjusting to, but I am rite with you. Take away that emblem, those colors, and that name and you take away everything. |

Re: Darrell Green does not support Redskin name change
I think most people get hooked on their local team as a kid since they are close and easy to follow and that tie is difficult to cut because of the local connection.
If there is no local team it seems like kids gravitate to a team that is good at the time. I suspect a lot of non-DC people who are Skins fans grew up in the 80s when the Skins were a force and on tv a lot. IMO that is a much easier bond to break. I can see those fans going elsewhere since its not like the Skins are a perennial powerhouse that is easy to root for. |
I grew up a fan in the early 90s lol I didn't.see much winning

And yes, it did help that I got to grow up during the 80's when the 'skins were contenders year in and year out, but that bond is definitely not easy for me to break today. I would have a very tough time seeing the name 'Redskins' changed to something completely different. If they changed the name to the Generals or the Federals, I'd almost feel like our team is being transformed into that team that always gets beat by the Harlem Globetrotters, lol! |

True enough, if there was not a bond and you lived in another city, chances are you would already be routing for the other team....... |

I agree. Even if the team changed its name, logo, and colors (gasp!), it would still be the only NFL team which I have not rooted AGAINST. |

they had meeting and Goodell wasn't even there. And Oneida wants to meet with other owners on SB week. Like that's going to do anything ? and they gave a 30 page pseudo science study paper that says the name is harmful to Indians psychies LOL and the want Goodell to visit Oneida tribe areas...right ? like they wont be all scripted how to act when he gets there? |
Re: Darrell Green does not support Redskin name change
Snyder should not change the name but I have a feeling the pressure is going to keep building up. If he does change the name I would want it go back to the Braves and keep the logo that we have. Have you seen the poll on espn? Washington Redsyns
Sounds like Redskins and Redsyn is an anagram of Snyder. Problem solved. :) |
Re: Darrell Green does not support Redskin name change
Synder should tell them I will change the name of the team when the state of Oklahoma changes it's name.

He should definitely say that he won't change the name until every High School in America AND the Braves, Indians, Warriors, Blackhawks and Chiefs agree to do the same. It's BS that the Redskins are being singled out. All or nothing. Everyone dives into the deepend together or not at all. The 30 plus page document on the National Congress of American Indians website says ALL of these names are offensive. |

Not real shocked about that....
WTF ....will we do without all the Hard core AssHat support? |
Re: Darrell Green does not support Redskin name change
I have changed my view on this whole name change thing from being against it to being for it. If native Americans find the name offensive who am I to tell them they shouldn't be offended?
The name needs to change, it will change. I am hopeful the logo and colors stay the same. |
Re: Darrell Green does not support Redskin name change
I really wish that the group that is advocating for the Redskins to change their name would go after the whole concept of using Native Americans as team mascots/names. While I do feel we are headed in the direction of a name change, I think it is ridiculous that you got all this pressure on the Redskins, while you still have the Braves, Indians (with their caricatured mascot), the Chiefs, the Blackhawks, the Seminoles, etc,. etc.

I have heard that is the game plan. it will be a domino effect. The funny thing to me is how Oneida could find Seminoles offensive if they aren't from Seminole heritage, I think that has interesting legal implications. |

They should be focusing on that and not just one team. I don't think they'll get anywhere attacking one team. |

I looooove the old school spear. I would not be disappointed if we went back to that. A little boring but I think it still works. |

They should drop the name and just be called Washington.

Do we know that? The last scientific survey done was in 2004. A lot of opinions can change in 10 years. I know we all can find anecdotal evidence to support the issue one way or the other, but to get the full picture we genuinely need to be asking Native Americans how they feel in as unbiased as possible. With the amount of attention this issue is receiving however, I am not sure that opportunity will arise. |

I was basing my post off two things: the recent, unscientific poll that showed that 90% of Native Americans aren't offended, and Native Americans that have come out and said they didn't find the name offensive. |

The people who are against it don't just find the name "Redskins" offensive, they find any use of Native American imagery or stereotyping (ie the Indian's logo or the tomahawk chop) offensive. As BaltimoreSkins said, they find the term Redskins to be the most offensive of the bunch so they are going after that first and then hoping it cause a domino effect and everything else will change. |

Well I agree 100% about the indians. Ive referenced that a few times. The rest of those nicknames are not really politically incorrect. I think Redskins would be the equivilant of say the ...California Palefaces. |

I do not think the logo is what this group finds offensive. I know the colors have nothing to do with it either. Imagine as a white person or a black person or an asian person....a team with a face from your origin....George Washington looking dude or MLK as the emblem - no problem. The nickname however is the "honkeys" or the "n&@ers"? - problem. Obviously those slang references are alot more volatile because of modern day society and racism for the most part has drawn away from the native americans and what happened to them hundreds of years ago. This particular group and handfuls of others consider redskins a slang term. Again - what if it was the palefaces or yellowskins or darkskins? I guess the real crux of the matter is how do you feel about those names? If they offend you as a white, black, or asian person than How do you justify Redskins?

I disagree entirely. I think the name "Redskins" has everything to do with this. I would understand your point if we were talking about nazi germany. How any reference or imagery of nazi-ism could be seen as offensive, but this is completely different. There is absolutely nobody up in arms about the use of native american imagery? Hell you can go to any reservation or any part of the country with a native american presence and buy native american art, imagery, head dresses, statues, etc etc etc. from native americans. |
Re: Darrell Green does not support Redskin name change
Really the name change you can change it no matter what. Despite the controversy, it will still remain Redskins. That is if you can come up with a creative name!

I just find it interesting that the richest Native American tribe in the country is on this warpath (pun intended) to rid the country of "racial epitaphs" in the name of everything good and moral, but see no wrong in making their millions off of people's gambling addictions. They should definitely do the right thing and close all of their casinos. |

So unless they put up with racial slurs (if you feel Redskins to be one is another story), they cannot capitalize on gambling like white americans do? |
