Sorry Skip but that's BS.
That wouldn't have helped with the other miscues, like the fumbles, tackling, blocking, etc. It was team effort.
I don't agree with this. I'm glad RG3 didn't play in the preseason; the risk of injury wasn't worth it. And it's true that it wouldn't have helped with other players' miscues. But playing RG3 for a half or so in preseason would have helped him "shake the rust off". To be honest, he looked terrible in the first half. He wasn't making the right reads, and he was missing receivers; basically, it looked like he was playing "stiff". He just didn't look comfortable. And that's because this was his first game action since the playoffs. Playing in the preseason wouldn't have prevented the team's bad play, but it certainly would have helped RG3's game in the first half. And if RG3 would have played well, it would have partially negated the bad play of the other players; instead of a 19 point deficit at half-time, it would have been more like a 10 point deficit. The quarterback is the most important player on the field, and if he would have played well the whole game, it would have gone a lot better for everyone. This Eagles' game was his preseason, and he will come out firing on all cylinders against Green Bay. Philly will be but a distant memory when we come out victorious. |

When you're not getting your name called and you're a secondary player, that's typically a really good thing. I think he'll be a solid #1 for us next year. |
Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread
every time I look at this thread and see the level of discussion about the D, I'm amazed. Out of 10 drives that Philly started in their field, they had:
1 TD 1 FG 2 Turnovers (both resulting in TD's for the Skins 1 def. 1 off.) 5 punts 1 kneel down. out of 4 starting on the Skins side, they had 3 TD's and 1 punt. Short fields are offenses friends. For the record, the Skins started 1 drive on the Eagles side and had 1 TD. We had 2 drives that started outside our 30, we TD's on both. If Kai makes that FG, we are playing to kick a game winner(wouldn't go for 2 the one time) instead of going for it on 4th and 15. |

The fact he was back in the starting lineup week 1 was a pretty major accomplishment on it's own. If we want him around for the next decade, it's more important to keep the big picture in mind. |
Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread
Speaking of easing in a player. Would you all welcome back Tanard and immediately put him in as the starting FS knowing he's rusty but Rambo is also a rookie, or do you go with the growing pains of getting a young rookie safety acclimated to the NFL as a starter since the other starter hasn't played in a regular season game in 2 years?

I don't think it would have been worth it either. Obviously, keeping RG3 healthy is far more important than winning an opening game. But what Skip Bayless said is true: if RG3 played in the preseason, we would have won that game. |
Is that assuming rg3 was 100% at the beginning of preseason?

Can't say that for sure. You could just as easily say "if RG3 played in the preseason, he would have been lost for the season." It's all speculation, and boils down to the fact that it wasn't worth the risk. It's one game, time to move on. |
Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread
Oh yeah I guess another positive is Mr. Riley. He played a hell of a game. We should work out a long term deal with him soon, because London's gone next year.
Also when did he start going by Perry Riley Jr. ? |

Absolutely would not start him immediately. There's a huge difference between your starting franchise QB and a free agent safety who has been suspended for drugs three time and has not stepped on a field in 2+ years. We don't even know if he's stayed in football shape. He could be a nice addition but he could also fail his physical. |

It's assuming that RG3 was healthy enough to play, which I think he was; and that he wouldn't have got hurt. |
Why did RG3 look so much better near the end of the game than at the start? Half-time adjustments?
Yes. they decided to actually get the ball on offense! Our D was on the field for the entire first half practically. RGIII had no chance to get in a rhythm. Yes, he threw some bad balls including 2 picks, but the fumbles by Morris and Philly's ball possession game did not give him a chance to get settled in and comfortable. Remember, he had not taken a live game snap, even at preseason speed since January. To expect him to light it up from the first snap isn't reasonable. I would have never predicted Morris' struggles. I thought we'd come out and run him down their throats and control the time of possession, which would have helped Griffin tremendously if we succeeded at that. |
Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread
I don't know, I don't post here often but I've been around a while. I don't get satisfied with moral victories. Instead of being happy about them looking better in the second half, I ask why did they play so poorly in the first? Clearly the Eagles took their foot off the gas in the second half but this game was essentially over at halftime, no matter how much window dressing gets put on it.
It wasn't just RG-3 either, the team was not ready to play at all. Shanahan got outcoached badly by a rookie? The man has one playoff win in fourteen years and people still think he's a genius. I'm not seeing it. Still a long way to go but definitley a poor start, getting thumped by a division rival in your own building, a rival that won four games last year. Hoping for better in Green Bay, that won't be easy either. |

I think getting more snaps during the Offseason and training camp, during practice, is far more beneficial than a drive or two in a preseason game. That's a more thorough and productive activity for any player. Clearly rg3 wasn't ready for that, otherwise he'd been out there. That's why I think Skips statement is pretty shortsighted. |

I'm not sure we win the game, that's pure speculation, I think he might have played better. Here's the thing w/ RG3. It's obvious he's not a fan of running read option plays anymore. His dad says..."show me a running QB and I'll show you a loser"...ok we get it. You want to be Aaron Rodgers. But from what I've seen so far, he's not that type of QB...he's at his best when he has a running game, and can run play action off the read option...and there's a threat for him to run. That opened holes up in the defenses last year. When teams know we have to pass, and he has to come off and go to his other options, and sit in the pocket...that's where he struggles, or isn't at his best. If he wants to be a pocket guy then we'll see how it shakes out. I'm not sure he's that guy though... |

Still a mighty big assumption. He could have gotten hurt again too. It's not a clear correlation between playing in the preseason and what would have happened last night. He might have played better, but Morris would still fumble, the tackling would still suck, etc. |
Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread
It's not like we had a whole lot of options at MLB... Perry Riley and... ? Old ass Nick Barnett? Kehl makes plays here and there but is he starting caliber?
We'll probably look to draft a MLB or bring in some young FA's the next offseason. |

No doubt, dude is a lock at ILB. But he needs another young guy to compliment him. No way Fletch comes back after this season. Dude needs to hang it up and probably should've after last season. But he is kinda the best we have for now. At least we have some vet leadership. |
Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread
Yep Oki, its in full effect.
We beat ourselves plan and simple, all the great things we did last year we did poorly yesterday. Mainly not taking care of the football and losing the field position battle. |
Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread
Fletcher really struggled last night...as did Bowen, Cofield, Baker and the safeties. Time to put this one to bed and get ready for Green Bay.

In 2007 the Giants looked awful in weeks one and two. They proceeded to win the Super Bowl.
We have problems but it is just one game. |

Cause RG3 as been talked about as much as any athlete this summer. I could see where that would annoy some fans and make them hate the redskins. Similar to Tom Brady/patriots or lebron James/heat. |
Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread
Why did RG3 look so much better near the end of the game than at the start? Half-time adjustments?
The team looked better, not just RG3. Some of it was adjustments, some of it was knocking off some rust and some of it was simply pulling their head out of their collective asses. I don't believe Philly took their foot off the gas, we simply adjusted to what they were doing and started playing better...albeit too late. |
Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread
We were soundly beat by a better team. Let's give credit here to the Eagles. I think this entire town overlooked Philly and forgot how good McCoy is. How good Michael Vick can still be. He's really in the perfect offense and really made some nice passes. But what surprised me most was their total disrespect for our offense. They blitzed us constantly.
And Kyle never came up with a solid counter, such as rolling Griffin out, or throwing more screen passes. I was incredibly disappointed by the offensive game plan. Don't expect other teams to respect Griffin as a threat to run until he proves that he can hurt the opposing D with his legs.

And we're not going to go against McCoy every week, meaning Fletcher might actually tackle a running back this year. But man, he's pretty close to finished. |

Re: Skins v Eagles post game thread
I'm not worried about a thing. I expect to see alot more of the second half type of play than the first this season. We had a couple of turnovers and things went south. But this team isn't made up of quitters. We came back from a big hole and almost won the damn thing. Robert and the rest of the team are only gonna get better. We get Keenan Robinson back next year and I think he's gonna be a hell of a player.
