You are also operating on the assumption that only Native Americans are offended by the name redskins when that is not the case. For instance, I think most Americans would be offended if they heard the word "chink" used derogatorly towards Chinese and Chinese Americans. Just because they represent a minority of the population doesn't mean we should accept it as tolerable. For better or worse what is considered socially acceptable evolves.
So if we as Redskins fans decide that the word Cowboys is offensive to actual Cowboys then we can be offended and demand a change? Not how it works...you can understand and agree that a word is offensive...but you can only be offended when the word or term is used towards you. There is a difference in my opinion.

SO why do you keep reading the articles and posting them? It's kind of like that person you know who eats or smells something bad, and then they turn to you and ask if you want to partake in their unpleasant experience.

No, no I do not.

I guess because I kind of find it funny at this point. It seems like everyone out there has to write an article these days on their opinion of the "Redskins name". We live in such a politically correct world. Here is my question for all of these media types. Take a survey of indians and find out if they even read your stuff. These articles seem to be whites or blacks trying to explain to other whites or blacks how Redskins in offensive.

Deezal, thanks for posting this. Rick Reilly kind of thinks about it the way I do. Why are white media types "championing" this cause. I need to hear from some native american media types. Would not that carry more weight? It would for me.

At least he quotes from some native americans in his follow-up piece you have linked and they seem to be fine with the word Redskins. I'm in no way saying they speak for all indians, but it is at least encouraging to see them have pride in the name like we do.

the mere fact that reservation schools call themselves redskins should just kill the issue outright. That and any indian team name or logo are the only things keeping their history alive in the first place. Its sports that got me interested in Indians. I was goth in the 80s LOL...and theres just something unique and fascinating about their art etc.

but the fact is , people and cultures do pass on and that woman cant figure that out but is more willing to kill our view of Indians then actually help it grow and be remembered.

in the 30s through the 50s many, many high schools and colleges had indian names of tribes near their territory. Now dumb asses like Wisconsin high schools and various colleges have given in with all this evidence it wasn't necessary at their finger tips...pathetic

Response To Pres. Obama's Comments

Posted 6 hours ago

Statement by Lanny J. Davis, attorney for Washington Redskins, in response to President Obama's comments on team name:

"As a supporter of President Obama, I am sure the president is not aware that in the highly respected Annenberg Institute poll (taken 2004) with a national sample of Native Americans, 9 out of 10 Native Americans said they were not bothered by the name the "Washington Redskins." The president made these comments to the Associated Press, but he was apparently unaware that an April 2013 AP poll showed that eight out of ten of all Americans in a national sample don't think the Washington Redskins name should be changed.

"We at the Redskins respect everyone. But like devoted fans of the Atlanta Braves, the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Blackhawks (from President Obama's home town ), we love our team and its name and, like those fans, we do not intend to disparage or disrespect a racial or ethnic group. The name "Washington Redskins" is 80 years old - it's our history and legacy and tradition. We Redskins fans sing 'hail to the Redskins' every Sunday as an expression of honor not disparagement."

Would not..........."Hey Barry do you not have enough shit going on right now without F...n up the Redskins?" serve just as well?

Does Barack even know that the Native American helmet logo was created upon the request of the late Walter "Blackie" Wetzel who was the chairman of the Blackfeet Nation and president of the National Congress of American Indians? I bet he didn't bother to research it, before basing his opinion. He should focus on fixing the government shutdown.

Guys, I don't mean to be a bummer, but if this thing gains anymore traction, a name change isn't that far off. These guys are going to be relentless til they get the name removed. I am an alum from Eastern Michigan University class of '93. Thing is in 1990 they decided to change the name from Hurons to the Eagles, because some Chippewa lady from around Mt. Pleasant found it offensive and filed a lawsuit(even though the Central Michigan Univ(Mt Pleasant) mascot are the Chippewas). White liberals decided it was offensive and didn't want any trouble, even though the indian head on the EMU logo was nowhere nearly as stereotypical as the one on our helmets. The Wyandotte Indians(Hurons) two chiefs from the reservations in Oklahoma and Quebec came to a football game to get the President of the University and the Regents to change their mind and go back to the Hurons. They were treated rudely by these so called PC liberals and effectively blown off. Thus the only reference to the Hurons in American pop culture was effectively removed all due to limousine liberals. I think the whole thing is stupid, but if this movement gains traction with enough of the liberals in DC, the name of our almighty Skins is probably doomed in the medium to long term.

Here's what President Obama had to say about the name "Washington Redskins", as reported by the Washington Post:

In an interview with the Associated Press, Obama said that he understood Redskins fans’ attachment to the name. But he also wondered if the attachment should overrule the feelings of Native Americans, who strongly oppose the name.

"If I were the owner of the team and I knew that the name of my team, even if they’ve had a storied history, that was offending a sizable group of people, I’d think about changing it", the president said.

He later said: 'I don’t want to detract from the wonderful Redskins fans that are here. They love their team, and rightly so — even though they’ve been having a pretty tough time this year. But I think — all these mascots and team names related to Native Americans, Native Americans feel pretty strongly about it. And I don’t know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real, legitimate concerns that people have about these things.”

Re: Redskins "Name Change" Volume 10000000

if Obama wasn't into politics he'd have a bright career as a journalist. He frames the argument as a sizable group of people instead of a small minority inside said sizable amount of people. and only one side has legitimate concerns. and frankly it looks condescending to me.

I'm sure the President didn't know the orgin of the Redskin name and logo. Poll Redskin fans and most wouldn't know Blackie Wetzel from Kemosabe. In the recent controversy, we're probably learning. Probably concerned about RG vs Cousins more than anything else.

And why would the president know Redskin history? He's a Chicago sports fan. He replied with a not-taking-sides answer, "If it's offensive to some people, I'd think about it..." Which Dan Snyder has already done.

Go Redskins! Change the coach, not the name!

Don't change the name, guys.

I'm pretty sure it was offensive at one time, or could be. But this is the English language. Meanings of words can change. If we say "Redskins" enough in the context it will come to mean "Washington's football team" instead of the older, racial connotation. Chief Wahoo is WAAAAY more offensive.

Plus I'd be worried about PETA and my team if this succeeds...

The President was just being a politician, appeasing both sides.

Yeah, even if he had responded,"I can't answer that question, I'm focused on the gov't right now" I still think it would've been mentioned somewhere, probably with a headline like "President avoids question on Redskins name; his unwillingness to answer question most likely means he supports name change."

Also (one of the rare times I'm going to say this) I agree with GusFrerrote in that since this thing is only gaining steam, albeit slowly, it's only going to gain more steam until the PC crowd eventually wins.

The President, as usual, needs to shut his mouth about things he:

a.) Is completely out of touch with with the American population about
b.) Is trying to influence opinions his direction when he has zero involvement in the issue
c.) Shouldn't even be paying attention to when has bigger issues to deal with.

Seriously, 75% of Americans just polled say the team should keep the name and 90% of Native Americans.

Seriously, Mr. President, how about signing a budget for the first time ever? We know your son who would look like Travon wouldn't be allowed to play football...just stick to things you know about.

You might have a point but he's mentioned our team on his own on numerous occasions. He has a stake in the issue and it's, as usual, against what the public wants.'

Here is is saying a "racist" (as he has told us) word in a speech too. His followers probably gasped and equated him saying Redskins with saying "N!gger". I think even he realizes it's just a team name, but he plays everything politically in terms of race, so to play to his base...he goes along with the chants that we're racists. I believe the real racists are the ones who constantly dissect every word LOOKING for somethings racist when no one else sees or intends it.
