Why are we not rolling out RG3 and using the aggressive play action game?
I honestly think there's a breakdown in regards to scheme. I think either one of the Shanahan's dont want to do it or RG3 doesn't want to do it. If RG3 is 100% like the claims then why not run the read option when it was proven to work? Yet the RO is almost completely gone? I just can't believe that that's accidental. There has to be some sort of internal disagreement somewhere. |

geez already
I can understand it somewhat. If all their going to do is have the QB sit in the pocket and throw the ball then they would be better off with Cousins in my opinion cause he will be just as effective. Plus it saves RG3 to get healthier. My suggestions are... Roll RG3 out more with play action, but don't have him run. Just roll him out to get away from the rush and so he will have more open field to work with as far as throwing. Have our WR's run more routes that utilize the curl or come back routes. fake a deep route get beyond 15 yrds and come back to the ball at the 10 yrds needed. Throw some WR screens and RB screens to slow the defenses down. design a play action roll out to a screen pass to the RB. All the defense will be chasing RG3. Throw in a few quick release slants to Moss or Reed and look for YAC. This should open up the defense early for the Morris runs. |

What long term concerns concern Smootsmack? |
Re: Skins vs Packers post game thread
Defensively... they need to start getting their hands up. I hardly ever see the DL putting their hands up to block throwing lanes.
I too don't know why the CB's hardly jam at the line. Slow up the WR, throw off the timing pattern... something. They got 5 yrds to jam or bump the WR, they should be utilizing that. |
Re: Skins vs Packers post game thread
IMO now this is just pure speculation, but I don't think RG3 likes the Shanny's all that much, I noticed him and Kyle both being frustrated yesterday a number of times. Maybe I'm just thinking too much into it

The media would jump on this so quick and crucify the shannys so fast it would make your head spin,no too mention the fans that would do the same thing. Read option is working for other teams because their qb is actually a threat to run with the ball, and until one one of their qbs gets injured running the read option they are not going to be scrutinized like we are. Lets say we didnt have a qb that ran the read option.Lets say Russell Wilson tore his acl for the 2nd time on the same knee last yr in last game of the season{doesnt matter how knee was injured}Can you imagine the criticism they would face{by us on the Warpath, and everyone else} if they came out with the same offense and him running the ball? And if something was to happen to that knee while he was running it they would never hear the end of it. so even if RG3's knee is 100 percent,I cant blame the shannys for not running him in the read option.I already believe its Shannys fault RG3 got injured in the first place{I know not everyone shares that opinion, but its at least 50-50}so if Rg3 injured that knee again running the read option I'd be ready to hire a hit man{not really but you know what I mean} |

It's ultimately all we can do, but history matters. Last year this division was the weakest it's been in decades. - The Eagles suffered injuries, especially to Jason Peters who's the best player on that team and arguably the best LT in football, and completely fell apart as Reid's tenure drew to a close - The Cowboys lost 8 of 11 defensive starters - The Giants are who they are, bad until they're really good So we came out on top of a really weak division, and lost the first playoff game in what was probably the most controversial coaching decision in decades, to play a QB who was severely injured and everyone knew it. ...and that's the highpoint of Mike's time in DC. The rest has been an absolute failure and embarrassment. Unprepared and undisciplined throughout. Piss poor play-calling and adjustment on both sides of the ball. Minimal passion/excitement across the board, whether you're watching coaches and players on the sidelines, or what's happening on field. There's clearly a lack of leadership. There's no continuity with this coaching staff either. You can't turn the team over to Kyle who hasn't shown any ability or leadership to be an HC. Haslett isn't HC material, per his record. Maybe the DB coach? I guess I just don't know what we're waiting on???????? You can't honestly look at this team and say we're anywhere near the level of Seattle, San Fran, GB, and I would add the Saints as they work out some kinks. And that's just in the NFC. Looking out over the league, we're maybe a top 15 team at best. How many years do you give a guy? Mike's completely made this his team. In fact, more than any HC in the league, this is the team the HC envisioned, almost total control. 5 years? 10 years? Denver did that and finally realized Mike couldn't do anything without Elway, who ironically has turned out to be a more successful football mind across the board. I think the writing is on the wall, it's each person's choice to read it though. |

Let's see, the play action only works when the running game is working. The running game early on has been ineffective for the most part. Probably a good reason why we aren't seeing many PA or bootlegs. |

Re: Skins vs Packers post game thread
Right now RG3 is looking like a shell of himself, either he is still very injuried or he cant operate within the pocket only looks. The bootleg, roll outs, play action are all staples of a Shanny offense, I dont see that style being run and it certainly should be.

I don't think he is still injured, but many people (in various places) have pointed out that it took AP, Brady, Manning several weeks of real game time to get into gear after their injuries. Griffin needed these games to get going, and I do believe he will be fine. That said, the team also needed the defense and running game to step up to take pressure of of his having to be try and be the catalyst, and none of that happened. We may not see the real Skins until we play Dallas after the bye. And by then it could be too late to stop the infighting that is sure to sprout up if we go 0-4. |

IMO RGIII is not playing hurt. He's playing scared. He's more worried about bodies around his knees than he is about making a play. My two cents.

Re: Skins vs Packers post game thread
So I'll try to prop up the falling sky with 5 suggestions to get the team back on track..
1. De-emphasize the read option looks and pitch plays for now. Defenses are overcommitting to them big time and is killing any hope of a running game. Keep them in as ways to get the defense on their toes but let's get back to the stretch-zone scheme from under center and from the Pistol to set things up a little more. 2. Get Haslett out of the booth. It's clear that SOMETHING big is missing (outside of talent) with the defense this year. Maybe there is a disconnect between the sidelines and the players, maybe adjustments aren't being made on the fly, I don't know. But it's obvious that we've got some major issues early in games before he can address the unit at halftime. 3. Get a hold of the penalties! As much as Philly and GB have whupped us, we've done a great job of screwing ourselves as well. Terrible decisions by guys all over the field with personal fouls, unsportsmanlikes, etc. Gotta be smarter and play smarter. Time for RGIII and Fletcher to start lighting into their teammates. 4. Luck is cyclical. We can't get much unluckier with field position. It seems that every drive damn near starts inside our own 25 yard line. We've gotten none of the field flipping turnovers we saw last year, no plays on special teams to move the ball into better position. Part of it is repeated 3 and outs after a kickoff but our luck has to turn around. 5. Remember it's week 2 and everyone else in the division is weak as well. Dallas can't move the ball consistently. Philly is gonna burn out by Columbus Day. The Giants, well they look worse than us! We were probably gonna lose to Green Bay anyways and whoever played Philly in week one was gonna get Spurriered. We get back to business at home this week. Go out and get some stops, move the ball consistently and we can put the plug back in the panic dam. |
Its hard to do play action passes when you are down almost 30 points by halftime.
A most excellent point but they seemed to have taken away what made this offense go which was the threat of RG3 taking off or handing off with the option. He has to be used as he was before the injury. It is what makes him so dangerous is his ability to run. It is what makes him special. If you just want a QB to drop back and throw then put Cousins in. Put RG3 back in the option and have him slide or get out of bounds if he keeps it. This opens up his threat to score as well as Albert Morris. He has to look out for himself but he can do it and run this offense like he did all last year. Just don't do a bunch of pitchouts with one hand. That is a fumble waiting to happen. |
