I know what we said, but you missed my point, which is the 3-4 isn't an excuse, and if Haslett didn't want to run it he wouldn't have taken the job. We have an entirely different team from back then. 4-3 or 3-4 doesn't matter when you're not tackling and not playing sound defense.

Haslett shouldn't be let off the hook just because Shanahan wanted a 3-4 here.
Well of course I missed the point when you answer with that reply
If you would have replied with that last sentence you just wrote then we would have been in complete agreement

Re: Washington Redskins vs Detroit Lions Pregame Thread

Haslett is responsible for the defense but Shanahan bears more accountability cause he's the head coach. We have an old LB that can't run, no true nose tackle and free agents that are playing poorly. This is one of the reasons he was fired in Denver, couldn't get his defense together. In the end, Shanahan is responsible for every player that plays on the team. To me it's a combination of lack of talent, guys not playing to potential and some poor coaching.

Re: Washington Redskins vs Detroit Lions Pregame Thread

Part of me hopes that if we don't make the playoffs anyways...I hope our defense continues to suck so we upgrade our defensive coordinator.

Going 500 or slightly lower isn't going to be enough to yank Haslett.
I never liked this hire...I grew to be ok with it...but why settle for a chronic underperformer...I just don't get it.

This year our defense sucks...but c'mon guys...last year they were 28th...that sucks bad too...we are just witnessing possiblly the worse NFL defense in the last 50 years over the last 2 week. Is it really any different that last year? nope...but they are definately underperforming.

I really think the offense is a fine NFL level unit...not as "incredible" as most thought last year...we just overperformed and went on a nasty streak...mostly against weaker NFC east teams too. We BARELY made the playoffs while overperforming both offensively and defensively...and our kicker was perfect.

Say what you want...but some of that is players...and some is coaching. I just don't understand why coaching can't help us more. I saw some adjustments offensively last week...and it showed improvement, and we will likely see even greater improvement this week...but not defense. Unlike others, I think Shanny and son are good...probabaly top 10 on offense. Who on earth would trade their defensive coordinator with HASLETT? you got it....NO ONE!

Am I calling for his head?...why not....we already have a much more successfull defensive coordinator on staff...give him the keys to transition now....and worry about the long term after the season. The scheme will not change and it is IMPOSSIBLE to get worse...think about that....impossible,
ZERO RISK PROPOSITION.

I know they will get better...and people will feel better...but the long term problem will remain. Haslett has to go. The sooner...the better.
I just wish they would make an executive decision and tear off the bandaid before it does more damage than good when it is far too late.

Re: Washington Redskins vs Detroit Lions Pregame Thread

Someone earlier posted Haslett's defensive rank each of his years that he has coached. It is astounding how terrible he is, to still be a coach in this league. Only twice in his entire career did he ever have a defense ranked in the top 10. Most of his years he was nearly dead last. How can he still be coaching in the NFL? Our defense right now is dead last in the NFL i believe and also may set a record for the most yards ever given up in NFL history. I think they have already given up over 1000 yards so far.

Does Haslett get fired mid season if we continue to lose? Or is the mentality that since Shanahan and likely everyone else is gone after the year if they do terrible, does Snyder just stick with them all. I think Shanahan will have to do at least 7-9 to keep his job. What do you think?

I disagree. Snyder has been ridiculed for his quick hook on head coaches. Even a 5 win season, Shanny should be fine in my opinion based on his offensive capabilities and Superbowl titles.

Haslett on the other hand took some teams down the toilet...remember he was a head coach too...that didn't work out very well. I have reached a turning point with him, he is the weak link, the defense will not improve over the long haul as long as he is here...even if we do get a couple free agents in the off season. I'd prefer a coach that has upside or at least an average track record...I'm sure there will be a solid D coordinator during the off season...perhaps a fired head coach like a ron rivera or a lovie smith (no research done on these guys) or our own Raheem Morris

Shanny was given full authority and the stability and continuity has been good for the team. I think he will is the lesser of whatever evil is out there. We can't keep having a HC carousel. Def Coordinator is something needed to replace. I don't see Raheem as next in line, the guys like him, but we run a 3-4.

I still want GWilliams back but that could never happen. Im not sure who could come in here and succeed.

Rex Ryan could be fired but after Hard Knocks, I lost all respect for him and he is too much of a D***hole for shanny to deal with.

Rivera could be a good addition but not sure about his familiarity with 3-4.

I honestly don't think the team likes Haslett. I've never seen Haslett with good body language or smiling, and worse than that, he has never been a winner. He is a BLEEPING LOSER!!!
I'm worried while we will be in play for FA's next season, that Orakpo walks to a better team and rejects whatever we offer. It was something in his frustration in the GB game that had me thinking- oh shit he is unhappy and like Laron, we are going to lose him. Rak could be a bidding war and plenty of teams would be willing to take him from us.
Haslett is out and Raheem walks, who fills in IDK. I doubt Slowik gets promoted.

You guys are silly. The last time Haslett's D was legit bad was Nov. 12, 2012.

We won the NFCE despite several key injuries.

You have nothing to measure it by this year--the O has consisted of turnovers and 3-n-outs in first halves.

My 2nd point would be: who's around and available that you would you want to replace him? Exactly.

Re: Washington Redskins vs Detroit Lions Pregame Thread

I think the entire team was a little high off of that run, and expected to continue that run into week one of the regular season, even after going 4-0 in the preseason. Maybe losing those two games gets our guys' heads back in it, and we make some noise. Either that, or that run last year was a fluke.

Whichever it turns out to be, I do think Haslett is coordinating his last season here, and that is a good thing.

I'm all for giving Haz the chance to work through this. After all we're only 2 games in. But if you don't think the D has been legit bad so far I'm really not sure what you're watching.

CRedskinsRule 09-20-2013 08:47 PM

The D is definitely bad, especially in missed tackles. That said, the whole league set a record last week with something like 11000 yes thrown, going off what Gil Brandt said. Some of it has to do with the leagues emphasis on safety, and heavy fines. Our one true hitter was fined forty two thousand, and rightfully so by the rules the league wants to enforce, but then if other defenders are second guessing as they go in for tackles, hitting will be sloppier.

Defenses league wide, with only a few notable exceptions, are giving up a ton more yards this year.

Re: Washington Redskins vs Detroit Lions Pregame Thread

Sorry about coming down on Haslett, but I simply don't think the 3-4 is all that, plus the yardage rankings speaks volumes about it effectiveness. That being said, I think we need to look at the Chiefs/Eagles tape to try and figure out a new scheme to try and mask the glaring deficiencies with our DBs. We obviously need more blitz packages.

If we lose it just wait until next weeks pre-game thread. We wont though. The one thing that scares me is that damn 0-fer streak the lions have in Washington. The law of averages is looming.

Re: Washington Redskins vs Detroit Lions Pregame Thread

We simply can't expect to go tit for tat in a scoring fest with teams that have a better D than we do. The system(3-4) might not be to blame, but we obviously don't have the personnel to execute it effectively. Fletch should have retired after the playoff game last year. He isn't going to see a SB unfortunately anytime soon. Our only saving grace is the rest of the division is subpar as well.

I told Okie how I saw the Lions break their losing streak a few years ago against us at Ford Field when Zorn was still HC. That was embarrassing, but I think we might be ripe for the picking if our D doesn't come out with an inspired effort.

The art of defense is becoming a lost art, but I think it is by design. The NFL is a product, just like any form of entertainment. With the exploding ticket prices, people aren't going to part ways with their money to watch a 13-10 yawner of a game. The fact that teams are going more and more to the 3-4, along with the don't hurt the QB at all costs mentality also is contributing to that. These so called rules aren't in place to protect the QB in as much as it is to speed up the tempo of the game and increase scoring.

That was really bad. I wouldnt necessarily be as horrified as i was when we lost to them than because this lions team is so much better. I will be more upset because i had huge expectations for the skins this year and 0-3 all but ends it imo.

I think that Calvin Johnson will rip us a new one. But otherwise, the Loins offense will self-destruct with mistakes and turnovers. Clubless Cofield will be more dominant.

I think that Gryphon will look more comfortable, be more of a running threat, and the offense will look more like it did last year.

The Loins long for satisfaction but find none.

Skins 38, Loins 34

I can't find what our injury report is....
I heard Hank is banged up. Not sure if merriweather is cleared. I heard griffin is only 91.43% healthy.

Gameplan should get back to skins football- perimeter stretch run game, i hqvent liked the ways weve used Helu and even all the passes to morris. It is more surprising to skins fans to see Alf catching passes than foolin the defense, it just is ineffective when We are trailing or need 50 yds for a 1st down, call some quick passes of slants, find Fred!!!!!, get griff rolling out away from a pocket that surely is going to be caving in, Moss is a Lion killer get creative and spread the ball type of day and close it out running it with Morris. Haslet calling soft cushion coverage, it is a must to cover the TE's and back field passing. I think we can win. Chris Thompson needs to make smart plays or move side for Paul. Rocca- I'm going to put my fist thru your mouth if you don't boom some punts so make your last year in B/G and possibly the nfl worthwhile.

The friggin home game isn't being televised 40 miles north to Bmore.

I love when Steven A. hands him his @ss on a regular basis. Keep in mind that Bayless is the idiot who said "white fans want Cousins".

This article is a lot of conjecture and Bayless stirring the pot, as much of the media has done on the RG3 issue all off-season because it generates hits and ratings. Here's the bottom line, RG3 has the passing ability to be one of the best of all-time, without the Read-Option. As I've said many time before, if we had a HC and OC who could scheme a productive NFL offense we would thrive on O (now we have the franchise QB, so that excuse is gone). Imagine a Patriots or Saints type offense....with Brady or Brees being able to run a 4.4.....good luck stopping that.

The RO has been figured out by NFL DCs and the increase of risk to a franchise QB is not worth the reward of increased YPG until you get inside the 10. Inside the 10 the compressed field takes away the main advantages of the RO.

Unfortunately there's a disconnect somewhere in Redskins Park. and my suspicion is either we don't have the X & O firepower that can teach the advanced NFL passing game, the coaches have misconceptions of RG3's abilities, or the coaches are so hard-headed that they think what worked 15 yrs ago in Denver and 5 years ago in Houston will work here, today. Probably a combination of all three.

Ooops I forgot, I want RG3 to fail and Cousins to be put in anyway :frustrated:
