Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread

Blows my mind how many people ive seen on different boards already calling for a losing season in 2014. People need to chill out. Its been ONE day. The Redskins have long been criticized for big splash moves being compared to other teams that compete year in and year out who make a lot of mid-tier signings and always field an equal team all around. This year we seem to be taking that approach and people are up in arms. There is still talent left out there in Free Agency, and we just spent 2 draft picks on safeties a year ago and I dont think bailing on them just yet is the plan. One in which (Thomas) we havent even see play.

There are options to be had at a much more reasonable price than the ridiculous contracts these first batch of FAs received (Outside of MItchell who I believe was reasonable deal at $5M per but questions concerning him benefiting for such a good front.)

At CB -

Rodgers-Cromartie - If his heart is in it he can be a borderline elite man cov CB.

Carlos Rodgers - He would be a great vet presence who could help at nickel or #2 or S possibly.

Antonio Cromartie - He can still play and would be cheap and is man 2 man.

Tracey Porter- Character issues, but excellent man to man cover guy.

Brandon Browner - Character Issues and suspensed 4 games. But at one point was considered the most physical CB in the league at 6'4 200+ lbs. Could be cheap.

Also Brown and Munnerlyn. Captain Munnerlyn I view as solely a Nickel he is another Josh Wilson but i dont view him as quite as tough of a 5'8 CB as Wilson was.

Plus we are attached to Corey Graham who had a great season last year and has the size we have been lacking at 6'+. Although I dont put too much stock in him yet.

At Safety there are also still options.
Personally Merriweather if he got he crap together I believe could still be a contributor, the guy isnt 27 yet and people forget he is a 2x probowl player. Just needs a readjustment.

Chris Clemons - Not worth breaking the bank over but has range and speed.

Thomas Decoud - Not the best cover guy but is a ball hawk when its in the air and can play in the box.

Champ Bailey/ Charles Tillman - Both have been mentioned to being open to position switches to prolong careers and would add a leadership voice to a defense that currently has none. We Miss you London.

But Mainly I like the approach of looking at Antonio Smith, and maybe another big body rotation guy like Terrence Cody who aren't elite pass rushers from DL spots by any means but we enough push due to strength to warrant double teams and collapse the pocket vastly helping the secondary. A weak pass rush can make any secondary look terrible.

There is still options out there for ILB as well which can help us.
My favorite being Spikes, just because of his tough nose run stopping ability. He brings a toughness I believe the Redskins could use.

Bottom line - Its early, stop complaining yet. The draft is loaded with CBs. We still have options and I think bailing on our recent draft picks so early is what always get the redskins in trouble. Think about Seattle, when in Nickel Packages they have 10 of 11 starters all drafted by Seattle, they just gave them time to develop and opportunities to improve.

I think for once, we may be making the smart moves instead of the splash moves and in the end I believe it will pay dividends

HTTR.
Judging from what we've done so far, it would appear that we have a budget of $4 mil. max per FA player.
lol...i think they are going conservative based on so many holes. i also think they werent prepared for the Joseph market, the DE market nor the safety market.

Safety is a major concern, being that the draft is already weak. The FA class was weak when Mike Mitchell gets that size of a contract. Im really lost on why the Browns paid Whitner and chose to let TJ Ward walk. Its astonishing really.

We need to get the Safety Clemons signed today and interupt Tanard's wake n bake for his signature.

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread

We do have some options.. or unknowns... as people here like to call them at safety/cb... ya know? .. Will Rambo improve? -- will Thomas exceed expectations of most and become a starter? are we going to re-sign josh Wilson (please god no) ? draft another cb? do they plan to get T.Jax back? Merriweather? -- What I'm seeing, and thinking, is that the FO has a plan.. our heads are spinning because we do not know that plan, lol. But I do however believe that they are making the right choices in what is the 'best interest of the team/franchise' at this point. And I am willing to roll with it.... I'm gonna stop stressing over who we are signing, what they are making, putting our cap numbers and players contracts under a microscope.... and wait for the draft and take the wait and see approach on any of the players we may bring on board.... After all ... none of it matters until at least august/September when players start to take the practice/exhibition/regular season field.

Cheers #HTTR

if we are going to release any of our own guys, I hope we do it soon.

I understand you dont want to cut Bowen or Chester until you have their replacement lined up but I dont like stringing guys along and diminishing the window of opportunity they have to sign on with another team.

I hope to see some redskins cuts today to coincide with some signings over the next 48 hours.

Carlos Rodgers - He would be a great vet presence who could help at nickel or #2 or S possibly.

HAS NO D IN HIS NAME BUT I'D TAKE HIM AS A FALLBACK OPTION IF WE DON'T GET GRAHAM OR MUNNERLYN

Antonio Cromartie - He can still play and would be cheap and is man 2 man.

DITTO WITH ROGERS BUT HE'S GETTING OLD

Tracey Porter- Character issues, but excellent man to man cover guy.

PORTER IS FAMOUS FOR GETTING BURNT!

Brandon Browner - Character Issues and suspensed 4 games. But at one point was considered the most physical CB in the league at 6'4 200+ lbs. Could be cheap.

TALENTED, YES. YOUNG, YES. WILL BE ON THE FIELD? NO. TOO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS GUY

At Safety there are also still options.

Chris Clemons - Not worth breaking the bank over but has range and speed.

DECENT, NOT TOO OLD BUT NOTHING SPECIAL

Thomas Decoud - Not the best cover guy but is a ball hawk when its in the air and can play in the box.

PROBABLY OUR BEST OPTION LEFT

Champ Bailey/ Charles Tillman - Both have been mentioned to being open to position switches to prolong careers and would add a leadership voice to a defense that currently has none. We Miss you London.

AGAIN, IF WE CAN'T GET ANYONE ELSE, MOVE THEM TO FS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS
My thoughts on your player choices.

What about signing TWO CBs like Graham and Munnerlyn and moving Hall to FS? Not a bad idea.

Another safety I'd add to our list to look into is Major Wright.

I hope that they were prepared for those markets. Joseph went cheaper than what I thought, Mitchell went for what I predicted here the other day, and I am not a professional.

It would seem that we are taking a Walmart approach - high volume, low prices. Not that this is a bad thing. Every team has just-a-guys; we're getting the lunch pail types who fit our vision.

Also, LOL about TJax.

Rodgers-Cromartie - now there's a name I haven't heard much of in the early goings of free agency. I wonder if Denver can afford him now that they signed Ward, Talib and are pursuing Ware...

He would definitely be worth a look in my opinion if Denver doesn't re-sign him.

Still, I was anticipating one more top FA signing, like a kid hoping for a pony at Christmas. Now, it looks like we're going to have to build a better foundation before that happens. I'm not complaining (much). It makes sense but ...WHERE'S MY PONY?!!!
After the initial reports of Sproles getting released Monday night, it was speculated (Rich Tandler) that we were the frontrunners for him.

Now that it's a trade situation, I wonder if we're still interested?

Gruden knows how to use 2 RBs effectively, as he did with BJGE and Bernard last season.

My question is who can we afford to trade? Certainly not draft picks...

Kirk Cousins for Sproles.

Monkeydad 03-12-2014 01:30 PM

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread

If it's a late pick, I'd trade for for Sproles. Unlikely a 6th or 7th-round pick would have the impact of Darren Sproles and we DO need another RB on the roster since we really only have Morris and Helu as usable-quality backs.

New Orleans will probably take anything they can get to end the embarrassment of the way they've handled Sproles in the last few days. No way they can keep him now.

No. No. No.

Kirk for a 2nd or a player full time starter.

Otherwise, keep him as a backup.

Monkeydad 03-12-2014 01:34 PM

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread

Yeah, Cousins' trade value is much higher than Sproles. The FA RBs aren't finding much of a market for them.

Fair enough. I suppose I consider a talented 3rd down back to be a "full time starter" and so worthy of a trade. NFLN has reported that 10 teams are interested in a trade for Sproles, so he has value. But I agree that we should get full value for KC.
