Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Redskins re-signed TE Logan Paulsen to a one-year contract.
Paulsen is a blocker who can catch passes in a pinch. Now 29, he missed all of 2015 with a "severe case of turf toe." He's a body behind Jordan Reed. |

Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Welcome back Logan!
IF healthy easily our best blocking TE and a better receiver then he gets credit for being.....and cheap Kendall Reyes welcome to the fold. He might not match Hatcher in production either pass or the run but he's younger and experience in Barry's system. Looking at what we have right now on defense: CB-Breeland ROLB-Smith DE-Reyes NT-Baker DE-Ricky-Jean/Paea LOLB-Kerrigan CB-Culliver NB-? Nickel DL: Edge Rusher-Preston Smith-Paea-Kerrigan ILB-Foster ILB-Riley FS-Hall SS-Duke S/NB-Jarrett I like Foster at ILB and it looks like maybe Riley is being given a mulligan on the shaky/injury plagued year 1 transition into Barry's D. My Free agent needs on defense: 3rd CB (2nd CB really b/c its seems unwise to pencil Cully in as healthy) Nickel Edge rusher Interior rusher in Nickel |
....The Skins should be able to address both positions with other players either in FA or in the draft.
A FA CB would be nice. There are a couple of decent ones still available. I don't see any FA OLB who excites me as a fan, other than our own Junior Galette. Inside LB can be addressed in the draft.
I hear ya, ideally we can address these positions in the draft (DL, OLB even CB). But you never now how the draft will play out and in the early rounds where Scott likes BPA it may not necessarily match up with the positions we need. I would like to enter the draft with as money holes addressed as possible through FA in order to maintain a BPA approach. I agree Edge rushers (OLB) are thin and even though I like Junior if he's playing hardball I would be happy with Jason Jones as nickel edge rusher. I could even get behind Andre Branch. And there's still a handful of CBs out there that I like. |

I don't think it takes PFF to let anyone know that Reyes production doesn't match Hatchers. You can look at plane old nfl.com counting stats to figure that out. But, here's something for fans that might look a lil deeper. https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2016/03/07/pro-pffs-live-free-agency-news-tracker/ Former Charger Kendall Reyes lands with Redskins 10:35 a.m. ET, Fri., March 11 Washington has agreed to a one-year deal with Kendall Reyes. The former second-round pick played as a 3-4 defensive end in San Diego, and will likely play in the same role as a reserve for his new team. Reyes has struggled to live up to his draft status thus far in his career. After an average rookie year, his overall grade has ranked last or second-to-last at his position in each of the last three years. He has graded negatively in run defense in every year in the league, but he did have one good season as a pass-rusher in 2012, when his 8.1 pass-rushing productivity ranked fourth among 3-4 DEs. Expectations won’t be high in Washington, though it is possible that a fresh start with a new team and coaching staff can help turn him around. – Matt Claassen, @PFF_Matt Me: Scouts like to talk about a singular trait or ability that highlights why their team would want a prospect. For Reyes his upside is the ability the showed as a interior pass rusher in 2012. (see bolded above) Hatcher lives in the top 5 of pass rush productivity for 34 DEs, but if Reyes can re-capture that a depth player then its a good selection. Back-up money with upside of top 5 DE productivity. |

I would like to know for sure Amerson's mom is or isn't grading for PFF. I haven't read definitively one way or another. If Tawanna was churning out the grades on Mondays throughout the season, it would explain a lot in how Amerson won the coveted PFF most improved player award. I can think of a dude who was benched in 2014 and is now franchised with his name next to a bunch of records who would have given Amerson a run for his money except for Tawanna skewing everything.
Hatcher lives in the top 5 of pass rush productivity for 34 DEs, but if Reyes can re-capture that a depth player then its a good selection.
You accidentally put an "s" at the end of "live" instead of a "d." Reyes had the same amount of sacks and more tackles than Hatcher last year. Hatcher is another year older. He was a good player but he can't take the wear and tear of a 16 game season. Whenever he would string a lot of playing time together without a break last year, his play declined significantly. His body wasn't able to recover as quickly as a younger guy. It was time to move on based on age alone. |

Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
You accidentally put an "s" at the end of "live" instead of a "d."
Right, lives in the top 5 is too high. But he's still up nea the top. This year he was 7th. 2015 he was 13th overall. 2014--7th.
Reyes had the same amount of sacks and more tackles than Hatcher last year.
Yeah, but Hatcher had 29 total pressures, that's 14 hurries + 13 QB hits. . Reyes only 5 hurries, don't know how many QB hits but he finished 50.5 in pass rush rating compared to Hatcher 84.5.
Hatcher is another year older. You are preaching to the preacher when it comes to getting younger; however there is a difference between getting younger and better vs simply getting younger. Like I said before I have no issues with the Reyes signing. Good depth that can eat up minutes if need be. He also has upside because of talent as a pass rusher. But, the team is gambling on whether Reyes can regain that 2012 form when he was 2nd in pass rush productivity w/ 5 sacks, 7 hits and 21 hurries. The upside is there considering the price. But he's not a replacement nor upgrade from Hatcher. I hope Reyes doesn't stop them from signing another 34 DE and I know it won't stop them from drafting a DE if one is the BPA. |

Signing Reyes and cutting Hatcher is not a 1 for 1 signing. He isn't Hatcher's replacement necessarily. He is just a depth guy. McLovin is signing young depth for the D line. Reyes was a low level starter for SD, now we have another team's starter as a depth player. McLovin obviously thought it was time to move on from a 34 year old Hatcher and a 400+ lb Knighton. I am incredibly naive this time of year, but I don't think we will miss them. |

Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
I love how we are keeping it low key and signing our own guys back. That's how you build a real team. Then those guys tell other guys that are free agents that we do things the right way.
Note - Obviously we don't resign every guy, that's not possible or expected. |

One thing we don't talk about as much as we should is the concept of having role players. As you pointed out in your post, the Skins must think that Reyes has the potential to help as a situational inside pass-rusher. Joe Barry coached him in SD, so the Skins know more about him than most teams. He isn't going to be highly paid so he's worth a shot, IMO. Joe Gibbs was known as "the ultimate role player coach" and he did alright. I've agreed with you so much lately that I may need to get a "checkup from the neck up". Or, perhaps I'm just now coming to my senses. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Reyes seems like a meh type of signing. Just someone who ads depth, can hopefully play the run well and bring some leadership... like Ricky Jean did.

I think McC sees a guy who needs a fresh start who has had success in the past. I know zero bout the Reyes, but seems like he was targeted by the from office who knows his character and needs that fire re-lit. I think they consider him a rotational player along the defense. It's a no frills, low risk signing IMO who has a chance to payoff if this guy can recapture his form from his first couple years in the league. |
Re: Redskins Free Agency 2016
Big ups to McC for locking up tress way. Unheralded, great season last year. Got us out some jams with big kicks, flipping field position. Love this move
