I actually think he handles playoff type pressure - it's football - see the dallas game, or cleveland game in 2012.

When contract talks get inside your head it can take your focus off your work. That's all I mean.
If i was building a con and pro list of him handling extreme pressure would be on the con side. I still believe the pro's outweigh the con's when evaluating him.

I guess the 2 body of works that stand out for me when thinking of him and pressure are the NYG game and the CAR. If GB game KC should up to one of those games we at least have had one more game this season.

Also you can take some pressure off him with getting the defense to at least middle of the pack and keeping good weapons on offense around KC. I think a good RB would also go a long way in helping KC.
He wants to get big time guaranteed mullah and security to go with it. I think the Skins are wavering for the same reason as last time. Yeah Kirk has improved stat wise, but he still folds under pressure against any team with a decent pass rush. How can you get to the Big Show if you can't hang with the big boys? I know most of us in here are definitely for getting a deal done quickly, but I don't think that is going to happen, as I think there might be some hesitation in the FO that he is actually worth what he probably will be asking for. Face it, he didn't finish the year out on a high note like last season, and he looked average at best. Blame the D for the losses all you want, but he got stymied by the Panthers, and didn't look very good against the Cardinals either. Don't be too surprised if we draft a QB. I am not really thinking they will, but they just might pull a "Doctson" on us.
Good Link.

Kirk did face the toughest defenses overall compared to any OTHER QB in the NFL this year.

He did that and still performed BETTER this year then he did last year.

Pay the Man. His celing is unknown and he continues to improve. You have to sign this rising star at this point.

He's the next brees, I know I've beat a dead horse with that comparison but it's true. He'll throw some picks like drew does but 80% of the time he'll have 3 tds to 1 int.

Yes, good post. Towards the end of the year it was more like 2 TD's to 1 INT, but even if he did that every game, we would still be okay if we only had an average defense. The waiting over the Kirk situation is awful! Does anyone know exactly when we should expect to hear something regarding contract talks? Does it start exactly after the super bowl?

Update: This article from ESPN says that we have been free to negotiate with him since the minute the season ended. Maybe the fact that they haven't might not be that good of a sign??
And again today Cousins has said his return is not in his hands.
What does that mean?

It is called contract negotiating and the typical "sabre rattling". It puts the onus on the other side to cough up his demands or hints at him leaving. I wouldn't be worried, but to be honest, I still am not sure if he is worth $25 million a year. Yeah his stat line was great, but he folds under pressure and is behind one of the better offensive lines in football. Is he really top ten because of this? IF we made the playoffs and just lost to the Seahawks again, this banter about Kirk would be moot, as that would have meant he shined all the way through, but he flopped during the back stretch somewhat, while the D let everyone down. I think they just need to give him a real long term deal with the cap per year at say $24-$25 million and be done with it. Let the chips fall where they may be. I don't see very many quality qbs coming out of college anymore and if you snag one, keep him. Kirk is a quality QB, but I do understand what some folks are thinking about second guessing the slam dunk resign position. I guess the question is, does he still have room to improve? In that I mean can he grow some poise to handle pressure when it comes his way?

I was about to post about this, listening to friday Cooley and Kevin show (without Cooley), there's a segment where Kevin was joined by Al Galdi, they talk about the stats mentioned in your link.

Best in the league in air yards (total yards minus yards after the catch), 3rd in the league in yards per pass attempt...

Cooley said the other day the reason why the Redskins are reluctant to pay KC big money for a long term deal is none of the decision-makers were part of a team with high priced QB before...

If this is true they need to wake the F up to the reality of this league and realize the odds of finding a better QB than KC in the draft or in FA are like at best 1 out of 15, imo.

Ok he had a bad game against the giants... but so did the whole offense! Trent Williams may have had his worst game ever that week, should we tag and trade him too?

By the way, did you look at KC in the pro bowl skill challenge? In the best hands drill he looked like the best QB out there, precisely on point on every throw.

I normally don't watch the Pro Bowl, but I was intrigued to see how Kirk Cousins would fair, and he balled out. Cousins definitely took it seriously, and darn near brought the NFC back to tie. Ol' Graham should have caught that pass in the end zone!

I believe part of it was him wanting to show he's a Pro Bowler and deserves to get paid. If he has another great year next year, Cousins might become a permanent fixture in the Pro Bowl.

I'm with the crowd that says pay the man. Hopefully this is the last week to speculate and that we'll hear something by next week.

Great play by Kirk, saw the clip, not the whole game.

Watching all that, it did occur to me how Clinton Portis screwed up his shoulder and lost a season in a play just like this some years ago. So I'm not so sure that this was a really good reaction or decision for Kirk personally or the team in a meaningless game. I'm sure his agent and some of the Skins brass held their breath for a minute there.

But yeah, great hustle and intensity and wheels, Kirk. Lets get him signed already. No question he needs to be signed, sooner rather than later.

Let's hope he is right:

"When I look at Kirk Cousins, I think he's probably their best player," ESPN analyst Jon Gruden said during the Pro Bowl broadcast, via the Washington Post. "He's a guy you can win with. I think he's going nowhere."

Given that Jon is the brother of Redskins coach Jay Gruden, those words should be taken as more than a guesstimation of a clueless analyst.

With access to the results, great play by Kirk and I loved it. But I saw that play live (yes I stayed up for the Pro Bowl) and when I saw Alexander make the pick Cousins was off the screen, and I was repeating over and over "Cousins get down, Cousins get down...".

Then he streaks into the screen to catch Talib from behind and my heart was in my throat.

He popped up just fine, thank God. Gutsy play and it embodies everything we love about Kirk. But MAN was that F'ing STUPID!

Many years ago, Sonny Jurgensen tackled a player who had just intercepted one of his passes in an exhibition game. Sonny hurt his shoulder on the play and missed some time. He was asked by a reporter why he risked injury by making that tackle in a meaningless game. His answer: "I'm a football player". To me, that said it all. The same goes for Kirk.

Well, think about it. You're Kirk Cousins. You've shown a lot of promise and probably enough to be considered a pretty good quarterback. But, what have you really accomplished? He couldn't lead the Redskins to a win over the Packers in the playoffs in 2016. His team gets embarrassed by the the Steelers on national television to start the season. He throws an untimely INT against the Cowboys in week two - which leads to a loss. He struggled against the Cardinals, which hurt their playoff chances. He struggled against the Panthers - again on national television and once again, knocked them out of a prime spot to wrap up a playoff spot. He failed to lead the Redskins past the Giants - a game that would have gotten the 'skins into the playoffs.

So, another golden chance for Kirk Cousins to show the national audience that he deserves that big contract. He played pretty well, but that INT was going to be another reminder of how much disappointment Kirk Cousins has had to face since the playoffs last year. So many opportunities to do something great right when it counts the most. Of course, we know the Pro Bowl doesn't mean diddly squat to us, but for Cousins, he probably felt it was a golden opportunity to shine. His team down 20-7, Cousins was leading the NFC back to tie the game. Could you imagine if Cousins had thrown a TD? Maybe they go for two and win the game? Suddenly, everybody is talking about how Captain Kirk comes in and becomes the hero. Shows that he's a true baller. Instead, his pass gets tipped and intercepted. My hat's off to him for running Talib down and knocking the ball out. He wanted to win that game badly.

Was it stupid? Probably. But, it proves to me that Cousins wants to win, no matter the stage, no matter if it's a meaningless game or not. Cousins was very grateful for the opportunity to play in the Pro Bowl. I think the guy plays with a lot of heart and passion for the game. I don't think you pass up on a guy like that.

That INT wasn't on Cousins at all -- Jimmy Graham totally blew it. It should have been a catch if not a TD; it hit him in both hands, for crying out loud. Cousins probably felt that way as well when he ran down Talib (which was pretty badass, by the way -- probably the best play by a Redskin since Sean Taylor blew up Moorman). I don't blame Cousins for doing it, and I would imagine any football player with an ounce of pride would do the same. I love the guy. Sign him already.

I read it earlier today and still feel happy that GM's and Coaches around the NFL are able to agree on what we can't seem to : That Kirk Cousins is a Franchise QB worth a big contract. Lynch put it out there in layman's terms about the perceived "high cost" - he said what Cousins is after is the going rate for starting QB's. And it's true.

At the end of the day i still stick to my belief that Kirk Cousins is not a Redskin when the 2017 season begins. IMO, they have done enough to make that known even without coming out and saying it. Do i want him here? Hell yes, I think he's the best thing we've had here in 20 years. But do they want him here? Probably not. I know Gruden and all the others are doing their part in "coach speak" about Cousins, but like someone else said on here, saying they wanted him back was probably just a way to drive up his value so that someone trades away big to get him.

I am happy to eat crow if at the end of the day Cousins is resigned to a multi-year contract here. And i say i deserve it if that happens.

I'm 43 and a lifelong Skins fan, but if they trade Kirk that will be it for me. I refuse to continue to support an organization that gets it wrong every time. That let's there ego or their bottom line effect there decisions. I mean really, did Kirk find Scott's liquor stash and poor it down the sink?? When the hell does that mean a god damn thing? Words are cheap. When we see Kirk smiling after signing a nice big contract then I will be happy. Until then anything said can be bunk that is said just to placate the fans and keep the competition guessing. You think they are going to let it slip out this early in the game if they are going to ditch him? Wait til the real negotiations start, then we will see if this is a bunch of hot air or not. Neither side is going to show its hand now. For all we know Kirk is going to intentionally highball his demands as to get the Skins to balk for all we know. Just let the chips fall where they will.

If he asks for the moon I would not really fault our FO for not resigning him. I know it would be back to square one with finding a QB, but we could have Drew Brees in his prime back there and still wouldn't get anywhere close to a Lombardi Trophy with that defense. Overall Kirk improved tremendously stat wise, but didn't have a really great back stretch either. The AZ and Carolina games were real stinkers for the offense. I think we sign him, but if he goes nuts and way over inflates his asking price, I am not so sure even I would sign him. Just too many holes left in the team that offset having him come back for an extravagant price. We really don't have much depth all around either.
