Wouldn't make too much out of it. Except maybe all those are most likely not the name.

Truth be told, I don't think I can root for another team either. Football has always been a passion, but as I've gotten older I've come to realize that as a culture we've divorced ourselves from personal responsibility expecting society/government to solve our problems for us so that we can focus our time, money, and energy on entertaining ourselves. Hence the exorbitant money actors, musicians, and athletes make while our elders are shoved into 100 sq ft rooms alone cared for by people that don't know or really care about them (although many are good people but are not given the resources to do their jobs well). Anyways, I'm trying to change in this regard personally, and the Redskins was one thing I really had a hard time letting go of. Football is a beautiful sport, and I hate to let it go, but it's hard to watch these days anyways, it's one long commercial for corporations that have destroyed small business and taken jobs from our citizens because they are propped up by big government and or commercials for the military. Ethically, it has become difficult to support the NFL, and it's nearly impossible to ignore. So, I was wavering anyways, and ultimately the nostalgia, the comradery, and the love of the sport/fandom attached to this franchise kept me around, but ignoring the fans vote because of the cost is too much for me to get past. I also suspect that there are corporate implications that have steered the decision. Those that sponsor the team likely had more say than the fans. So fuck them. They can have their team. I'm going to focus my energy in things I can control and will no longer live by "their" whims when it comes to my passions. I will pop in occasionally to cheer you all on if the team accomplishes anything. I love this community and appreciate sharing my passion with you all for so many years.

Will , I hear you .. but if you are trying to flee corporate America then it’s not much left .. Money controls everything.. From the cradle to the grave! Being a fan I’m just trying to find a little diversion in the daily struggle to get by .. Redskin football is that escape .. I have other passions but as a fan this team has entertained me for over 40 years ! I lived the Glory days cheering with my dear Grand parents .. they were big fans !! I was with them for all the Super Bowl seasons !! That is Priceless!
In a strange way even the disfunction of the Snyder era has been a form of entertainment in and of itself .. long ago I lowered my expectations so I don’t really get mad anymore .. I the Grand Scheme it’s just entertainment!
My personal feeling is I would have never coward down and changed the name but Thats just me .. so here we are ,some of us ready to throw in the towel for good .. some on the fence .. some never were fans to begin with .. the diehards will stick it out !! Heck it fixin to get real entertaining .. with the name and all the fallout from that , the search for a QB , the stadium .. the untold scandals that await us … Hollywood can’t make movies this good .. heck no I’m not leaving I’m gonna continue to be a fan and watch the show good or bad ..

I can fuck with some cognitive dissonance and cheer on a bird indigenous to the area that I feel a connection to.

That said, I can totally see them going with something super generic to avoid backlash from the woke contingent. I also wouldn't put it past them to not realize how many people would feel apathetic toward how generic it is.

I may have to purchase tools from people I despise, but I own what I make with them. I do think we can take it back, and they may just force us to.

That said, I 100% get where you are coming from, and begrudge noone for finding relief where they can find it.

Regarding the Name Commanders.. at first I hated it , then someone on this forum bought it to attention that it is a reference to George Washington which the city is named after .. he was the Commander in chief .. a reference was made to the Buffalo Bills .. Bill Cody etc . Looking at it that way made more sense .. I still would have preferred red wolves but IF it’s commanders I can live with it .. i don’t get the admirals and the redtails doesn’t make me think of a hawk .. let’s face it we can find fault with ANY name .. we all agree that the greatest name/logo brand was the Redskins and apparently a lot of people thought it was horribly Rascist.. so what do I know😀

I think in terms of "actual" possibilities I'd be pretty happy with Sentinals, Hogs, or RedTails. If it's Commanders I'll eventually get over but really hard meh.

That is overreacting a bit. Just ignore what they call them and you go on calling them the Redskins and only buy Redskins gear (if you buy). The latter actually hits the NFL and Snyder in the pocket as Redskins gear is now only sold by independent businesses.

Redtails has an amazing history in America. The biggest complaints I see about this name are 8th grade jokes that can be spun-off it. That's not a good reason to not use a name. It's like not using Redskins because 4th graders can say foreskins.

Another issue, which I agree with, is that's it's similar to using Redskins. I think Native Americans have an awesome history, and Redskins was an honorable name. And 99.99% of all Redskins fans either don't even care it references Native Americans or think it's awesome because it does. 00.01% like the name for the racist connotation. In the end, it didn't matter.

Using Redtails opens up arguments off of trying to profit off of a minority group, etc. And it's a 100% guarantee that will happen. Also, frankly, I don't think Snyder has earned the right to use such a great historical reference.

I don't think we should use any name that is human related altogether. It looks like that is going to happen though.

Really wish it could have been Redwolves, Wolves, or Hogs.

I have done the avatars in the past of all teams, if they are not available still and Matt doesn't mind I will make them again if needed/wanted.

That said, I already stopped buying their gear years ago, but I can't enjoy rooting for a team that celebrates the military or federal government. I'm very much not on that team.

Don't we have enough birds in the league anyway? Also I think they want to stay away from anything that could be possibly misconstrued as racist, now or in the future. So that means no to any colors in the name.

tab your photo on the main page, then when the icons come up there is a drop down window and you can select a team icon.

I was unaware that there was some kind of quota in the NFL for bird names. 5 of 32 does not strike me as excessive.

As to your second point, it took some very 'magical' thinking to state Redskins was a racist name. But sillier notions have prevailed, humans are imperfect and prone to hysteria, and this is where we are.

But to think that anyone could seriously state that Redhawk is racist is going way beyond magical thinking and deep into the realm of absolute stupidity.

Yeah, that's what I do. It says there are 76 icons. Quite a few are for the same teams.

For example, I don't see a Jets, Lions, Dolphins, Jaguars, Patriots, Saints, Steelers, Seahawks, or Raiders avatar.

I'm not saying they aren't there, they just don't appear when I look on my phone. I'll try looking from a computer later.

Magical if not delusional. The indigenous peoples of the Americas do not have red colored skin. I would think that obvious, but there's that magical thinking again.

I favor something that keys in on continuity and history. Something that can retain most of our logos, our fight song, and similar. The advantage to that is we move forward without completely jettisoning the past. The change is minor, nontraumatic, and gets us well away from the woke's crosshairs.

You favor a complete makeover from top to bottom. You are getting an NFL expansion team in all but name (pun intended). The only link to the past will be .... [I]<drum roll>[/I] .... Daniel Snyder. In essence, you will be rooting for a team with a USFL sounding name owned by a scuzz. Frankly, I do not see any appeal in that.

Now, don't get me wrong. If you are cool with that, more power to you. But imho if we are getting a new team, why not choose a new team like Green Bay which is run by people of a serious nature?

Nobody is whining about anything. He implied Redhawks of all things might be construed as racist. I simply offered a polite response.

It is rather hard to discuss our impending new name without occasionally referencing the old one. That does not amount to whining.

I'm just trying to think from the team's perspective and why they would want to avoid putting red in the name again. I think they want to start fresh and not give anyone the chance to misconstrue the name again. They're keeping the colors, so that's the tie to the past. The use and meaning of words change over time, what's harmless today might not be down the road. Redtails sounds harmless enough today, who knows down the line. I know it sounds crazy but I'd guarantee that's part of their thinking.
