So why haven't we talked to Brent Grimes? He is a top 10 CB when healthy, he just came off an Achilles injury (so his money value goes down) and he's been on the market still after 5 days of FA (Value should go down again) I know we're tight with cap money, but I feel like he could just squeeze in there.

Also speaking of FAs coming off an Achilles injury. Why haven't we worked out a deal with Fred Davis? Whats the hold up? Is it still the cap. Fred had what one interested team (Cleveland?) and hasn't found it as a fit. He wants us and we want him. Lets make a deal Fred. This is getting ridiculous.
I hope Fred is not going to sign one of those 1 year deals that takes us right out of the market for him.

I think the obvious answer is the cap restriction we have. Even with an injury and lasting this long in FA, he may want too much financially. We also don't know what extenuating circumstances there are about him that we don't know. Maybe his rehab isn't going well. If no one has signed him, including his former team, there may be a valid reason.

IDK what is up with Davis. I'm assuming it's just cap issues. I feel like at this point Davis really doesn't want to sign and go to a place like Cleveland, but doesn't want to take what the Skins are offering. Again all speculation. We may never know. Hope like hell we can resign Davis. That is my #1 priority/wish right now. Then I want D Hall back. And then I want a pony.

Reunite Cedric Griffin and Michael Huff here in Washington. Bring back Hall, this would bring some needed size in the secondary and they could really be legit if Morris can get these guys motivated.
Highly unlikely.

First of all. free agency isn't over yet. It is very likely that we'll sign a veteran CB to start opposite Josh Wilson.

Secondly, the situations of Brandon Meriweather and Tanard Jackson (the two projected starting safeties last season) are unknown at this time.

Thirdly, nobody knows if the Skins will even draft two DB's, much less who those players might be and what positions they might play if the Skins draft any of them.

Beyond that, the odds of any 2nd or 3rd or later round DB starting in his rookie year are exttemely low.
Number one, plenty of second round DBs end up starting their first year. Secondly, I will bet my next Army paycheck that we have at least one starter from the draft in the secondary, AND that we draft 2, and in my opinion, there is a 99% possibility that they draft MORE than 2 DB's. That is how broken our secondary is.

There will be alot of young competition, and with Merriweather and Crawford growing a bit as a defender, I suspect our pass defense ranking will improve drastically this next year. Never discount the effect that having a contract year Brian Orakpo with a chip on his shoulder will do for your D.

Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013

And I believe that the issue might be, and this is just a shot in the dark, that Fred "BongHit" Davis is a little unsure of the situation. Im thinking that he has himself convinced that he got franchised, got a year's payday at a top 5 Pro Tight End pay, gets injured, and didn't really blow the socks off of anyone even when he was healthy last year, and now the market has dried up for TE's, all the good and healthy ones are off the market. He wants a longer contract than one or two years, but that is all we are offering, and mind you, at an EXTREME discount compared to his top 5 pay year. Slightly above average play for a half of a year, then blowing out your knee is not the potion if you want a huge payday in the NFL. Especially not after being one joint puff away from being out of the sport for a year.

I know that was long winded, but I think Fred Davis hasn't signed because the realization is just now hitting him that he isn't gonna get even HALF the payday he thought he would, and he is just holding out hope. Ultimately, even if someone offers him a better deal by a little, I still think he comes back here. Why you might ask? Because signing a short deal to stay in Washington with a top 5 NFL quarterback that will inflate your stats, so if and when you DO hit the open market, three years removed from the stupid suspension, you will have a healthy knee, are a proven veteran that is still quite young, so you are in a much better position to demand top dollar. That is compared to this year, when even Cleveland isn't knocking down your door, and you just tore your ACL. His best bet is to stay put, and RG3 will basically set the market for him next year, or in two years if he signs a 2 year deal with Washington.

Ultimately, I think FD returns here this year. And then after he proves himself, in more ways than just one, he will get his money, and long term deal to stay a Redskin for a longo timo.

Just as I suspected. Here is you answer.

@Rich_Campbell: No surprise here, but cap-strapped Redskins aren't pursuing free-agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha or Brent Grimes, per sources. Too expensive.

Yeah John Keim said that he doesn't really fit our defense. I guess I'll trust his scouting/sources/opinion. We don't need a Nnamdi Jr. type of situation here.

The allure of having Talib here was that he would have fixed the CB issue for multiple years, instead of just one. But even with him having signed with NE, the CB market is still very deep. We can sit around until the draft and we'll still be able to sign someone who is an improvement over what we had at the position last year. And in the draft, we'll be able to find starting corners in the third round. Multiple, if we wish.

Safety is a bit dicier. There aren't a ton of great FA options out there (at this point, you either overpay for the decline years of Michael Huff/Bernard Pollard, or you're not getting a starter) and while the draft has a number of quality safeties, it's not quite as loaded as corner is. I think we're going to trade down from (perhaps out of) the second round, and it may be tough to improve the safety position at this point.

The best options at safety might be internal, you have: Meriweather, Tanard Jackson, DeJon Gomes, Reed Doughty, Jordan Bernstine, and Jordan Pugh all under contract for next year. That's five guys who have started games in this league, and a 7th round pick from last season. It would probably be a failure to not add any competition whatsoever at the safety position, but it's going to be tough to do better than what we already have right now.

This scenario seems very likely

So if we lose Fred Davis to Cleveland, who do you all see us signing to replace to him? Or do we look to the draft? Also, is there any word about whether Davis is leaning toward staying or leaving?

I thought I heard someone in this thread say Davis said Cleveland wasn't a good fit for him.

Well last that HTTR247 said that we both want each other and we're trying to work out a deal with him. Cleveland is so far the only team that he said has shown interest in him.

I see lots of TEs in the draft whether Davis stays or goes.

Escobar - the spanish gronkowski as I call him

Jordan Reed- Florida guy whose game is similar to Freds (great WR, poor blocker)

Vance McDonald- Rice kid who is athletic and versatile

Ryan Otten- San Jose st guy who put up good numbers, but his QB is considered a top 3 QB for next year so maybe his numbers should have been better

Travis Kelce- NFL bloodlines, fast good hands. Looks like Brent Celek.

Phillip Lutzenkirchen- Auburn boy who was hurt this year but was a beast the previous 2 years, especially with Cam. Hardworker who gets the job done.

Talib would have been another Chris Dishman. We haven't heard Dishman's name in so long but he was great in 1997 and we said goodbye to him after he had a lousy 1998.

I like the notion of drafting a safety instead of signing one. There's Phillip Thomas who was the best defensive back in the nation last year. He can play both safety positions and he's a ball hawk. He does nothing but snuffs out the run, plays the pass well, and causes lots of turnovers. Because he went to Fresno State which is a program that is not a powerhouse, he's very underrated. But if our scouting department has done their homework then we might be able to draft him because he's not projected to be drafted until the late 2nd round.

The Redskins are taking a risk on keeping Tanard Jackson. Hopefully that year long suspension has taught him a lesson. Brandon Meriweather looked great in the one game he played. He's certainly a projected starter. Reed Doughty is a solid reserve safety that has proven his work regardless who type of defense he plays in. Gomes did well as a rookie but he took some steps back last season.

I completely agree with you about Phillip Thomas(82 total tackles, 8 INT's, 4 sacks; according to Fresno State's Official Athletic Site). Of course stats aren't everything, but if he is available in the 2nd round, he should definitely be our first draft choice.
