There's a different in giving an over-the-hill FA a boatload of cash and improving your team with younger/role player talent. Like most things in life, building a team requires a balanced approach. Good drafts and FA pickups. People forget that some of our crucial players are FAs. Fletcher, Moss, Garcon, Bowen, Carikkier, just to name a few.
Carrier was actually a trade. We swapped 5th rounders with St. Louis. That is how little they thought of him. They gained 15 spots in the 5th round.

Kind of sort of off topic but did not want to start a new thread for one question...
How come we have not received any compensatory picks for our lost free agents?
1. Carlos Rogers
2. L. Alexander
3. Laron Landry
How does the compensation work? Do the Skins have to show interest first or an attempt to resign?
I do not think that we have received any comp picks in while, am I wrong?

Found this online.....Compensatory picks

In addition to the 32 picks in each round, there are a total of 32 picks awarded at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as "compensatory picks," are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick.

If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as "supplemental compensatory selections").

Compensatory picks are awarded each year at the NFL annual meeting which is held at the end of March; typically, about three or four weeks before the draft.

I would think the first rounders we lost would get us 3rd or 4th rounders?

You are right in the interest and availability to sign players being equal to picks. LL and CR were signed to 1yr prove it deals and we were prepared to see them walk.

I do not know if we would get a pick for LA simply based on the fact that we signed him to a UDFA contract initially and did not draft him. I do not know if the rule still applies to players you develope and lose even though they were not drafted.

If we had drafted LA his situation would be one that would garner a compensatory pick.

comp picks are FA lost vs FAs gained. if we lose rogers and sign haynesworth, there's no comp pick there. if we lose rogers and sign no one... probably a 3rd rounder (since he went to the pro bowl that year).

I did forget about the adding players of value though. That's why when we lost LL we didn't get one because of PG signing. The year we let CR walk we signed Bowen, Cofield, Wilson, and OJ A.

Arians was just in Indy and trades him to his old team; That would be an interesting move. nfldraftscout said that Fitz wasn't going to happen but if Irsay is really telling the truth, then it would make sense to bring in Fitz. Fitz, Reggie Wayne (he could also be apart of the deal), Hilton. That team just got real good.
Bringing back Hall for a 1 year deal isn't sounding too horrible right now.
Hard to see Hall accepting a one year deal, anywhere.

Good link. I don't agree with Davis' (relatively) high position. Hehe. Seriously though it's the injury situation. If healthy he's easily at that nine spot. With the ? of health up in the air it's a whole nuther story.
I do think the Chicken Littles up in here need to take a pill. Our secondary will be so much better next year because of the presence of Brandon Meriweather alone. They will come up with a passable CB either through the draft or through patience in free agency.

And has everyone forgotten how Reed Doughty performed at the end of the year? Dude may have turned a corner.
I'm confident our secondary will be improved, but not sure about the above. Merriwether's injury history is really, really concerning at this point. I think we'd be irresponsible to count on him. Luckily, Doughty is turning into a fine wine of sorts and improving with age (experience really), so we're probably ok at SS even without adding a starter. Gotta add starting FS talent though, no two ways about it. Our 2013 starting FS CANNOT be on the roster today or else we'll still have a bottom of the league defense :(
And I believe that the issue might be, and this is just a shot in the dark, that Fred "BongHit" Davis is a little unsure of the situation. Im thinking that he has himself convinced that he got franchised, got a year's payday at a top 5 Pro Tight End pay, gets injured, and didn't really blow the socks off of anyone even when he was healthy last year, and now the market has dried up for TE's, all the good and healthy ones are off the market. He wants a longer contract than one or two years, but that is all we are offering, and mind you, at an EXTREME discount compared to his top 5 pay year. Slightly above average play for a half of a year, then blowing out your knee is not the potion if you want a huge payday in the NFL. Especially not after being one joint puff away from being out of the sport for a year.

I know that was long winded, but I think Fred Davis hasn't signed because the realization is just now hitting him that he isn't gonna get even HALF the payday he thought he would, and he is just holding out hope. Ultimately, even if someone offers him a better deal by a little, I still think he comes back here. Why you might ask? Because signing a short deal to stay in Washington with a top 5 NFL quarterback that will inflate your stats, so if and when you DO hit the open market, three years removed from the stupid suspension, you will have a healthy knee, are a proven veteran that is still quite young, so you are in a much better position to demand top dollar. That is compared to this year, when even Cleveland isn't knocking down your door, and you just tore your ACL. His best bet is to stay put, and RG3 will basically set the market for him next year, or in two years if he signs a 2 year deal with Washington.

Ultimately, I think FD returns here this year. And then after he proves himself, in more ways than just one, he will get his money, and long term deal to stay a Redskin for a longo timo.
I like it. Basically the perfect scenario for us and not too hard to imagine.
Highly unlikely.

First of all. free agency isn't over yet. It is very likely that we'll sign a veteran CB to start opposite Josh Wilson.

Secondly, the situations of Brandon Meriweather and Tanard Jackson (the two projected starting safeties last season) are unknown at this time.

Thirdly, nobody knows if the Skins will even draft two DB's, much less who those players might be and what positions they might play if the Skins draft any of them.

Beyond that, the odds of any 2nd or 3rd or later round DB starting in his rookie year are exttemely low.
I can almost guarantee that they will draft at least two defensive backs seeing as right now our only real starter is Josh Wilson, and it is not out of them realm of possibility that a 2nd or 3rd round rookie could start seeing that it happens all the time.

I would think the longer FA goes, the more the team will save on costs. If the FO has people in mind for DBs and they know interest is low why rush.
