wow didn't know Hardesty has had 3 knee surgeries

but from seeing him a few games this year he looks like he'd be our type of back... that 1 cut/go type guy

Mitchell: 'Clinton could've worked harder'

Not many - if any - of Jim Zorn's assistants are expected to be around next season. We know now for sure that running backs coach Stump Mitchell won't be.

Mitchell, who has taken the head-coaching job at Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., had a lot to say today about Clinton Portis - and it's clear that this will be one of the toughest, most important and most pressing questions Mike Shanahan and his staff will face.

Mitchell gave Shanahan his final report on the 2009 running backs, and while he didn't reveal the report's details, he didn't mince words in a telephone conversation Monday afternoon.

Asked whether Portis would benefit from improved practice habits and better conditioning, Mitchell said, "that's a slam dunk. Clinton could've worked harder."

"He's got to do that, and Dan" -- owner Daniel Snyder -- "has to understand that that's what has to be done. In order for the Redskins to be successful, that's what Clinton has to do. He has to change the way he's done things in the past, in order for them to be successful as a team."

Mitchell thinks Portis is still capable of being a Pro Bowl-caliber running back in the league, but only if he prepares like one.

Seems to echo what Shanahan said at his presser about older guys needing to work harder to stay on top of their game.

Thanks for posting that SF. If CP could get his act together, i'm fine with him staying on the team, as he has the potential to be our most talented running back. that said, i won't beleive it until i've seen it. he's been coddled far too long. I think he really needs a change of scenery to really change.

Clinton needs to go!!!! He has been a cancer from day one, and I’m frankly tired of his BS. It time to cut the head off of this snake and part ways with CB. If BA and MS do that, then I will truly feel good about the direction of this Team.
I voted no, but its a very aprehensive no... I like everything Portis has done for this organization. I really do. This in by no way, shape or form is a "good riddance", because I think he's meant a lot to the franchise... but I just dont think he has it anymore, he's an average runner, still a great blocker and a tough guy...but the fact that he's not what he used to be, make him not worth the headache for me...
I'm a little curious about what he has meant to the organization as a whole? To me one year of sabotage takes away the average good he has done. It's funny how everyone talks bout his great blocking, yet it was lack of practicing that hurt the blocking scheme while he was in this year.

I agree, it not's so much, can he do it, but will he do it. It really bothers me that an ultimatum has to be given to a professional athlete to get him to stay in shape and perform at 100%.
Fred Taylor had 63 carries this year. Portis next year will make $10 million if we keep him. If we used him in the same capacity as Fred Taylor then we'd be paying Portis $158,000 per carry. This year we payed him around $79,000 per carry. If he had gotten 300 carries we would have owed him $16,000 per carry. Of course in comparison the Patriots paid Fred Taylor $47,000 per carry this year (2 year contract $5 million with $3 million owed in 2009). Man all this math is making my head spin. I'm going to go dye my hair now.

lol at the blonde Clinton.

But...
Forget the numbers. WE HAVE NO OFFENSE.
We need to DRAFT A BACK!!
BUT
Bottom line is... one more year for CP to rehash the fire.

If not.... cya later pal.

If for some reason we don't draft one this year maybe that kid from Penn State that's from NoVA will be available at a decent pick next year since he didn't declare, Royster I think.. he seemed like he'd be a solid late round pick this year but he decided to stay his senior year

I wonder if Ryan Mathews will be available when we pick in the 4th round

No way do the Redskins need CP back. The Redskins are going to have to pay some other team to take him. They had a better running game without him anyway.

Clinton was taken out plenty of times due to his LACK of pass blocking. He wouldn't step up (directionally) in order to block the pass rusher closer to the LOS, not leaving JC enough room to step into his throws... Just wanted to add that since I think many people have forgotten about that. Add that to his not practicing which messes with the lines continuity and learning how to block for Clinton, I say he has to go. IMO. Too much downside, not enough upside.

Will work on making my comments more concise in the future!

Re: Do you want Portis back next season?

I think in 2010 it will be a new CP. He knows Shanny won't take his stuff and the fact of the matter is Portis will be out of this league if he doesn't shape up. No more NFL, no more money and when you have an entourage or family thats on your coat tails financially that money will be gone fast. He needs to rebound in his career especially if he wants to be known as one of the best. I think a combo of him and a Dexter McCluster or Toby Gerhart, Javarris James, or Legarrette Blount plus Anthonty Alridge would be great behind the proper oline

Re: Do you want Portis back next season?

I only said yes because his YPC dictates that he was a better back than Riggins. As much as I loved Riggins, Portis has earned the opportunity to surpass him. I would allow him back for one season to break the record if nothing else. I feel that he deserves that even though he has not been the greatest team mate. He should not have the starting job though unless he earns it in the offseason.
