So for every Fletcher there's Josh Morgan and Josh Wilson. I'm not saying we should not going and get anybody. I don't want to see the 2000 Redskins all over again.
Josh Wilson was all we could afford. All the good cornerbacks had been picked over.
For every Josh Morgan there has been a Pierre Garcon.

For every Josh Wilson there has been a DeAngelo Hall.

We could debate this point forever. Yet, I get what you're saying. You're flexible about signing FA's as long as they are the right ones.

I think free agency can help us but we definitely don't want to get in cap hell with bad FA contracts or continue to think that FA is going to save us. It's just one of the ways to build a team, with the draft being the primary way.

We just need to to do a better job of evaluating personnel so there are fewer misses with both FA's and draftees. Poor personnel decisions has been our bane.

Also, in most cases, I think it is better to go with younger FA's who the Skins think are about to step up to a higher level of play. Pierre Garcon is an excellent example of a smart FA signing, IMO.
Redskins free agent signings: when they're bad, they're bad. When they're good, they cost a lot, and are average.
Skins need to utilize the talent that they have:
cut/release: Merriweather
sign: FS
resign: Hall
Build with: Crawford, Amerson, Minnefield. Biggers, Thomas, Rambo

Improve the players that are here, give them an opportunity to get better, and put them in position to be good
Minnefield ? What has he done in the NFL

Minnefield is a good player that hasn't been fully healthy. That's why they over paid him to be on the development squad last year. He has good instincts although not as big as I'd like but, is good in run support and coverage.
If he can't make the roster this year then cut him but, given the opportunity I think he can be a good one.
There are players that need to get on the field, Shanahan had his favorites, that's the only reason J Wilson was playing, in my opinion.

I see a Byrd, Mitchell combination in the Redskins future.

JoeRedskin 03-02-2014 05:21 PM

Byrd is not making it out of Buffalo.

I'm sure Buf will tag him

I will try and find the link but the Bills have been trying to sign Byrd to a long term contract to no avail. They also are NOT going to use the tag on him. I guess we will find out the truth in about 24 hrs. Rich Tandler had the link in a tweet

byrd is not going to be worth the price he will command. Get a journeyman stopgap at CB, try to find a decent cheap veteran to teach our two young safeties, and play should improve over last year. Don't need to pay a kings ransom for one DB when there are so many needs and questions on this team.

No link but I understood Byrd to be turning down top 2 money, if we do that then let Rak walk that would annoy me more.

I don't see bringing in Byrd as a great idea for the skins. To many resources tied up in a guy who may or may not be a good fit here.

over paid him to be on the development squad ? there is a set salary for all development squad players.

I thought Chase was healthy for the 2013 season... ...reportedly he was inactive because of a reluctance to play special teams, no surprise someone who did 7 BP reps at the combine would get hurt

Just saw on NFL Network at Byrd is unlikely to get tagged rolling across the bottom.

No, you can pay them whatever you want as long as you can fit it into the salary cap.
