They announced the ineligibles over the speakers in the stadium according to those that were there. So yeah slightly cheesey move by Belicheat but not illegal. More of a loophole type of deal.

Here is an article on it, play the video and watch the play. Vereen was ineligible but split wide. On the snap, he drops back and acts like a receiver. The play was clearly designed to create defensive confusion. It worked but, like most trick plays, probably won't work again versus any disciplined defenses.
