Re: The Official 2007 Draft Discussion Thread
Landry is known as a better coverage guy and he should create the mismatches Williams envisioned with Archuletta.
Just like someone else pointed out, they have shown more of him stopping the run. From what I've read, he's better at run stopping. If he can stop the pass as well as everyone thinks, then I'll be happy. I just fear another 06.
Don't rule out Fletcher making our defense more stout against the run and commanding it the way Pierce did. I think you are going to see a big time improvement immediately.
I actually REALLY like Fletcher. He is familiar with Williams system, and still has some gas in the tank...but how much gas? He is pretty old. |
Re: The Official 2007 Draft Discussion Thread
landy is not a effing run stopping safety!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and nether is taylor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we dont need that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we need a run stopping front 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! these safeties will make more plays in coverage than they ever would in pass coverage man......are you kidding me come on man maybe you dont know what we need hence the redskins picked the guy i suggested not your pick you naysayer so give me props donkey and i will commend you in calling out the 6th round pick thing so just admit i am better at knowing talent!!!!
We'll have to make that decision later on regarding Anderson Okoye vs Landry. Again you're comparing a four year productive starter (Landry) to a one year wonder (Anderson) and a 19-year old child (Okoye) who didn't play high school football. Rest assured Snyder will bolster the DL and LB corps before long.

Re: The Official 2007 Draft Discussion Thread
Let's not compare Landry to Archuleta. Landry is the real deal. Not only does he rock ballcarriers silly, he's has the football smarts to go with it. And Sean Taylor doesn't get beat often. As a matter of fact, he seemingly had a better season alongside Ryan Clark and Vernon Fox (guys who he trusted to know their own assignment). The greatest thing is that now we have some stability and not a roundabout Stoutmire, Prioleau gig.
Not to sound too negative...but AA was an all pro before being teamed up with Taylor. AA was the real deal. There is a reason why commanded the highest salaried contract for a safety ever. Like I said. I think Landry is one heck of a talent...I think you guys are missing that in my comments...what I am thinking is he won't gel with Taylor. Clark was nothing special, but his style of play worked perfectly with Taylor. The coaches weren't willing to work with AA to get him to where they needed him, I hope they don't make the same mistake with Landry. |
Rest assured Snyder will bolster the DL and LB corps before long.
That is my utmost concern...so what do you think the Skins have up their sleeves? I am not confident in our DLine at all right now. In fact, I feel they rank right around the worst in all the league. |
Re: The Official 2007 Draft Discussion Thread
I agree they do. Anderson would still be a starter for us, and I beleive Okoye would be too. I'm not saying Landry is a poor player...I just see AA all over again. Picking a run stopping safety when we needed a pass defending safety is not the wisest of things to do IMO. There is obviously nothing I can do about the fact that we picked Landry, except HOPE that we can turn him into what we need...
If we can start Golston, we probably would start either of them. Maybe people are enamored by Landry's tackling highlights but he has pass coverage stats too... 12INTs 22PBUs in four years in the SEC.

Like I said...I hope you're right. We need a good pass defender there. If he can fit that bill, then I'm fine. |

Problem is, NFL will limit those pockets. We only have 4-5mil in cap space, and now we have to sign a #6 overall pick which will cut into that. We won't have a lot of room to get a good DE. Really, I'm fine with Carter, and fine with Griffin. Golston...not so sure, and Wynn and Daniels NEED to go. So if we can somehow find a solid DE to replace them, I think we'll be fine. |

I have a friend that is a Bills fan, and he says Fletcher is not the same...he's losing steps. I have to admit, I don't think I saw a single Bills game last year, so I really don't know. jsarno, landry and arch are totally different styles. u see, landry actually excells in coverage while that was archies weakest aspect.

I agree it was Arch's weakest attribute. Let's not forget, that while people think he (Landry) was good at coverage in college, not all talent translates to the NFL. There is no doubt this kid has talent. Let's hope he's a good compliment to Taylor. |

Bottom line, we all are disgusted with having traded away picks for Duckett and Lloyd.

Re: The Official 2007 Draft Discussion Thread
...Since being named Freshman All-American in 2003, the four-time All-Southeastern Conference selection has not only garnered quite a few postseason honors during his college career, but has also given opposing offensive coordinators nightmares. Landry did not allow a single touchdown reception during his career while producing 15 turnovers...

We better get Kris Jenkins. Landry is a great player, but you HAVE TO address needs, and we didn't do that. We need DL something terrible. We'll see what happens. |

One option may be Simeon Rice. He has been rumored to be on the trading block due to his huge salary and age. Not sure how that has changed after they drafted Adams |

So, PP, Omar, and Vernon are long term non-upgradeable players at safety? Hmmm. No. So, it actually was a need position. The only debate is whether or not we now have too much invested at safety, a highly valid question. And by the way, in all likelihood LaRon Landry is going to become one of the most popular Redskins players, quickly. Let's just see how this plays out before we jump to conclusions. What's done is done, and I for one will be looking for people who cry about this pick, only to become huge Landry Lovers once this guy shows us all what he is capable of on the field. I will personally hand out huge plates of crow pie to all those who are guilty of this likely and predictable flip flop. |

I think LL is a phenomenal prospect at his position. I am thrilled to have him. But when I look at how many teams got better at multiple positions, and when I look at how the Skins had ZERO picks in rounds 2-4, it sickens me when I see how many DL prospects passed us by. I figured when you said, "we HAVE TO address needs, we didn't do that", that you where saying that safety was not a need position, when IMO it was. Correct me if I'm wrong. DL continues to be a glaring need for this football team. We very well may not be competitive again until that is addressed. In the meantime, we no longer have any need whatsoever at the safety position, that much is now abundantly clear. It is sometimes impossible to address multiple needs on an NFL football team when you have only one pick on day one of the draft. The frustrating part is that it is of our own doing. Hopefully, the lesson has been learned. Judging by recent indications, it has been. Notice that we have not traded away any more of next years draft picks for "established" players or for more draft picks this year. I like the drafting of Landry, a lot. If I'm the GM of the Skins I'm looking to plug the holes as best I can on the defensive line this year, and next year I will be hard pressed to pass up on solid DL prospects in the first and second rounds. By that time, we will also have gathered a lot more information on Jason Campbell, who more than any one person will dictate the fortunes of the franchise. |

I think what he's saying is, safety was a NEED position, but certainly an upgradable one. We NEED DLINE! We could have used a back up QB too since Brunell is inconsistant and old, and Collins is a nobody, so would Quinn have been a "need" as well?? I say no. A NEED is something we needed immediately and if not filled would still leave us hurting. (ie: DLINE)
DL continues to be a glaring need for this football team. We very well may not be competitive again until that is addressed. In the meantime, we no longer have any need whatsoever at the safety position, that much is now abundantly clear.
I'm glad to hear you say that, cause it seems everyone is drinking this landry cool-aid...and let's face it, it's tasty cool-aid, but we needed to address another position. AT least we know the secondary is not going to be an issue at all this season.
