As free agency moves into its third week, 91 players have switched teams and 54 re-signed with their 2007 clubs. That leaves a thin list of 166 players, including more than a half-dozen who are expected to retire.

The hardest thing to find is young players. A little less than half of the players on the unrestricted list -- 78 to be exact -- are in their 30s. Who are the best of the remaining players?

At 25, Chillar has all the right numbers to help out as a strongside linebacker. He's 242 pounds. He's young. He has 41 starts in four seasons. Though he's not a spectacular player, he does everything well.

The Cardinals and Packers are among the teams interested in Chillar. He's among a handful of linebackers who still have a chance to get a nice multiyear contract ([URL="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5069"][COLOR=#000000]Ian Gold[/COLOR][/URL] is another). Chillar is big enough and strong enough to thrive in a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme.

[B]2. [URL="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4761"][COLOR=#000000]Rosevelt Colvin[/COLOR][/URL], LB, [URL="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nwe"][COLOR=#000000]New England Patriots[/COLOR][/URL][/B]
Cut by the Patriots, Colvin is having a difficult time generating interest. That's a surprise. He's only 30 and could play outside linebacker or defensive end. During his final four years with the Patriots, he averaged six sacks a season and still has the potential for 10.

The market for 3-4 outside linebackers has slowed since the signings of [URL="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6354"][COLOR=#000000]Calvin Pace[/COLOR][/URL] (Jets), [URL="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6801"][COLOR=#000000]Travis LaBoy[/COLOR][/URL] (Arizona) and [URL="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6816"][COLOR=#000000]Antwan Odom[/COLOR][/URL] (Cincinnati). Colvin is slightly more attractive than [URL="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5166"][COLOR=#000000]Clark Haggans[/COLOR][/URL] (Pittsburgh), who is expected to visit the Browns this week.

[B]3. [URL="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4156"][COLOR=#000000]Grady Jackson[/COLOR][/URL], DT, [URL="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=jac"][COLOR=#000000]Jacksonville Jaguars[/COLOR][/URL][/B]
Run-stopping defensive tackles are hard to find, which maintains Jackson's market value. He's 35, but he's still good enough to start. Not only is Jackson immovable on running downs, he can push the pocket on passing downs. He got out of Atlanta early last season and ended up playing well for the Jaguars down the stretch.

Jackson is available for a phone call and the right money.

[B]4. [URL="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4659"][COLOR=#000000]Daunte Culpepper[/COLOR][/URL], QB, [URL="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=oak"][COLOR=#000000]Oakland Raiders[/COLOR][/URL][/B]
His knee is healthy and he still has the strong arm. Culpepper started six games for the Raiders last season, posting a strong 7.2 yards per attempt and completing 58.1 percent of his passes. Culpepper and [URL="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6343"][COLOR=#000000]Byron Leftwich[/COLOR][/URL] are the best quarterbacks available in a market in which teams are looking for more backups than starters.
It's not out of the question for Culpepper to go back to the Raiders. The backup quarterback market is closing quickly. The Rams, Saints, Falcons and Giants made deals with backups last week. The Packers and a few other teams are still looking.

The Chiefs loved the versatility of Wilson, a former second-round choice. Drafted as a tight end, he's helped out as an H-back, a fullback and a blocking tight end. What's valuable for interested teams is his ability to catch passes. He caught 15 passes in 10 starts in 2006 and had 24 catches last season. A team needing a tight end can use him exclusively as a pass-catcher, but he's also valuable as a blocker. Plus, at 26, he's just entering his prime.

I mentioned this in a previous post but the Skins worked out Jamarcus Russel last season too, so the fact that we work out a high profile player doesnt mean anything untill we actually draft them.

Well coaches always work out the better players because that helps them be able to better evaluate other players talent in the drafts to come. You can see every differen't type of player and their style, and in my opinion that would help you be able to scout/draft players better in the later rounds when you have worked out the better players.

This is just my opinion but I would think this is why, plus you NEVER know when a player will drop to you or what not.

Jones told his agent, Manny Arora, that the Cowboys are on the top of his list of teams he would like to play for. Arora said he has spoken with numerous teams and would like a trade to happen before the 2008 NFL Draft scheduled for April 26 and April 27. An NFL spokesman said Jones, who is currently suspended, can still be traded to another team. Updating a previous report, The Sports Network reports the Seattle Seahawks agreed to terms with free-agent CB Marcus Trufant (Seahawks) on a six-year deal worth $50.2 million, with $20 million guaranteed, according to The Seattle Times. Trufant will reportedly earn $28 million over the first three years of the deal. The Seahawks placed the franchise tag on Trufant in February, which would have paid him $9.465 million, the average of the top-five players at his position, for the 2008 season. Trufant had seven interceptions in 2007 and made his first Pro Bowl appearance. He was selected 11th overall by the Seahawks in the 2003 NFL Draft and has started all 78 games. He finished second on the team in 2007 with 85 tackles, 78 solo, and led the team with 16 passes defended.

The Pittsburgh Business Times reports the NFL and its 32 teams are carrying more than $9 billion in debt. This is according to a report by the SportsBusiness Journal. According to the report, the debt load is a lot higher than that carried by other professional sports leagues. The MLB and its teams are carrying a $3.1 billion debt. Jeffrey Kessler, outside counsel of the NFL Players Association, said he is not concerned by the debt level due to the league's huge cash flow. The union, however, has filed a collusion complaint against the league over the NFL's plan to reduce the debt load.

The rule banning long hair from the field was proposed by the Kansas City Chiefs. The rule would not require players to cut their hair but would make them tuck their hair into their helmets.

The revised proposal would allow a second player to have a speaker in his headset but wouldn't be allowed on the field the same time as the guy with the headset.

The NFL should really crack down on these guys with hair hanging out of their helmets. It's kinda gotten out of control the past few years. Some of these guys look redunkulous, like cave men.

I do agree.

Larry Johnson was punished for grabbing onto Polamalu's wig last season.

WHY? If you're going to have a woman's hair-do and NOT make sure it is somehow secured or inside the helmet, expect it to get yanked in a football game.


If they want to wear it, they should understand the risks of getting it ripped out of their scalp.

I understand that players from Samoa may wear it because of their culture, but it poses problems with them getting it yanked, covering up their name for people watching (not that we need a name to find Polamalu on the field...), but many American players have the same style just because they want to.

Aside from the pain it may cause the player, it just looks ridiculous and if the league is going to be so strict about socks and towels, they need to be consistent with their uniform policy and crack down on this too.

You guys are professionals, try looking the part.
