The Skins won the division in '99, the first season with Snyder on board. Granted he wasn't involved with any personnel moves that year but I think it counts as a division title under his reign.

I support the idea of signing Crowell and Willis. I would also sign Hunter Smith.

At this point we would be fools not to sign Hunter. For those of us that know the importance of consistant good field position.(I assume every Warpather does) Hunter is a no brainer

They haven't done squat to help the offense* (which was the problem last year btw...) so we need a good punter. Hell at this point, I would say he would be the team MVP next year. We need an advantage for those 13-10 games that we are going to see every week.

* Sorry that I don't think Dockery is going to magically turn into the next Larry Allen now that he is back. In fact, I vividly remember our goal line offense struggling big time in his first go around.

Now that we have cap space, I think we need to resign Evans and investigate resigning Washington for a cheap deal. I'd even talk to Springs and see what it wouuld take to bring him back to play free safety. There are no OTs out there worth signing, so unless Heyer looks like a stud, we may be locked into signing one with our first round pick.

Other than pursuing every option we can to see if it will improve our offensive line, i dont think we need to do that much to our offense. Thomas, Davis, and Kelly should all be improved in their 2nd year. One would hope Campbell would be more comfortable in the system and everyone on our offense (including coaches) should be improved in their 2nd season. Yes, players didnt play up to expectations last year, but Zorn was horrible at playcalling. Our offense should be improved somewhat simply by the fact that everyone will have been in the system a full year.

We did alot to help our offense last year, while we neglected our defense. It makes sense to be focusing our efforts on our defense now.

Willis at least started games for an NFL team last year. Just having him on our team would provide depth on our OL.

We can't be picky about how he's not a former 1st round pick at this point. We are in dire need of depth on OL. If he can start for the Seahawks then he certainly can help our offense out.

As if our offensive line is so great that we need to be turning away warm bodies that started for other NFL teams. If you recall last year's performances on offense I'm sure you wouldn't kick Willis out of bed.

The defense was 4th in the league. The offense couldn't bust a grape. Bill Walsh's playcalling would have been lousy the way the line crumbled last year. I don't know how you can criticize playcalling when they barely had time to complete a three step drop.

Willis started games but so did Heyer and so did Jansen. Starting games doesnt mean anything. Theres tons of players in this league who have "started games."

Nothing i have seen or read about Willis gives even the slightest inkling he would be an upgrade over what we have. We don't need depth at OT. We need a starter. We can only carry so many OTs on our roster and if we add someone, it needs to be someone who provides a clear upgrade at the position. Willis is just another teams Stephon Heyer. Nothing more, nothing less. We don't need another backup.

As long as we can keep Justin Geseling from blocking Terrell Suggs late in the season then it's fine with me. I'll take anybody over that guy.

Jansen is through so he can't even be counted as an OT. The Skins don't even want this guy to touch the field.

I'm not going to argue that our offensive line didnt regress last year, but your point is exaggerated. Campbell had plenty of time to complete a three step drop 99.9% of the time. We didnt have a bad offensive line last year. It was just average.

2008 NFL Offensive Line Rankings
15. Washington
The Redskins' offense was very inconsistent last year, putting up solid numbers in some areas and weak numbers in other areas. They finished 7th in rushing touchdowns, 12th in rushing yards, 13th in sacks allowed, and 14th in passing yards. On the other side of it, they were 20th in passing touchdowns and 27th in yards per carry. Much of that had to do with injuries, as the o-line was missing a few starters due to those injuries. If they come back healthy, the offense should definitely be more consistent.
The vast majority of the time, Campbell had more than enough time to get the play off. In fact, there are only one or two instances where he didnt have enough time for a 3-step drop - a staple of the WCO. The problem is, Campbell is a horrible fit for the WCO and he's never been comfortable taking 3 step drops. Campbell is a guy who needs more 5 and 7 step drops. He's not that quick. I cant count the number of times last year i yelled at the TV because campbell was holding on to the ball to long when he needed to make a decision. Campbells problem is that he locks on to one receiver and waits to see if he gets open or not... he will have to make much quicker decisions and anticipate the recevier breaking his route if he wants to have any success in 2009. Our O-line isnt great and it needs to be upgraded, but its good enough for our offense IF Campbell breaks his old habits and does what he needs to do.

Thats an exaggeration in some post article (and I thought I was the only one who liked to exaggerate facts to prove a point). If they didnt think he was a capable backup, he'd be cut - We actually have the cap space to do it now. If we get rid of Jansen, then by all means, we should bring Willis in, but as of right now, we need to find someone who is an upgrade over Heyer and Jansen, if possible. If not, we need to hope Oher falls to us in the draft.

Heyer and Jansen ARE the depth.

How many tackles do you think a team can carry on a 53 man roster? Unless your answer is 5, we only have room for one more OT. And unless you wholeheartedly beleive that Jansen or Heyer will be solid at RT all year, then we have no reason to bring in any "depth." We need to bring in a starter.

sorry, but i disagree. jansen is cheaper to keep than cut. we don't need to cut him if we're still getting other players or waiting on draft picks (if we were going to take the hit, but its silly to take a hit and lose your OT depth for no reason).

You misunderstand my point. Its obviously stupid to cut Jansen. The point i was making is that if Jansen is taking up a roster spot, then it would be foolish to bring in Willis. If jansen and Heyer are here - they are our depth. We need a starter.

If we decided Jansen wasnt even capable of being a backup, then at that point we would have to eat the cap hit and cut him. In that scenario, i would be in favor of bringing in Willis - but we would still need to draft an OT to start at RT.

Re: Jason Taylor Released
Truer words...
A team can only afford to carry 4 OTs. Last year, Samuels and Jansen were our starters, so Fabini and Heyer were our depth.

This year, we know Jansen cannot start, so at this point, he IS our depth. We've "upgraded" our depth already by replacing Fabini with Jansen as a backup OT. Heyer is our other backup OT and there is no one available in free agency who is a noticable upgrade over Heyer... so anyone we bring in would just be another backup. Do you want 3 backup-caliber OTs and only one starting-caliber OT on our roster?

We need to bring in a starter, not more depth. I dont understand why some people just cant seem to grasp this concept. Am I not explaining it clearly or is there some huge hole in my logic that I dont see?

I thing there's room for honest disagreement on this point. Yes Heyer has started in the past but has always struggled, especially in run-blocking. Willis out of Seattle started 10 games last year and played in all 16 but only gave up 1.5 sacks. I believe that's fewer than each of our o-lineman surrendured. Willis is also said to be a mauler in the running game. I don't even know whether the FO is looking at him but it wouldn't surprise me... personally i think he'll be an upgrade over our RT situation for the past 2 years.

... btw even if we grab Willis i'm still onboard for taking Oher, Smith @ 13. We do need to get another legit starter @ LB too.

I think some people are overvaluing Willis. He's the best OT on the market right now and no one is showing much - if any - interest inhim... that should tell everyone something.

So in your scenario, if we grabbed Willis and took Oher or Smith at 13, you are cutting Heyer? Heyer has only played two years and improved dramatically each year. IMO it would be foolish to give up on him now.

Currently, we need a starting DE, RT, and LB. The only scenario where it makes sense to go after Willis is if we plan to take a LB or DE with the 13th pick. However, LB and DE are much easier to fill in free agency. Bringing back Evans solves our DE problem. Cato June, Derrick Brooks, and Crowell are all better LBs than Willis is an OT, if that makes sense. LB is also going to be pretty deep in the 2nd and 3rd round, so we can always pick up another LB there.

I respect people can have different opinions, but it just doesnt make sense to get Willis if were serious about "upgrading" the RT position.

If Seattle thought Willis was in any way able to handle LT, they'd be scrambling to keep him given the age of Walter Jones. The fact that he's out there on the market means they think he's RT material.

Completely agree...we have to add an impactful player to our OL this offseason. Offense was our weakness last year and we haven't added that huge talent to the offense where we most need it.

I'm for signing Willis and drafting OL with our 13th overall pick.

Redskins Insider said many in our organization think Heyer can be an "above average" starting RT.

I havent heard anything said about Willis. He may or may not be better than Heyer. We dont know. Either way, the future RT of this team is already on the roster - his name is Chris Samuels and he can only be effective at LT one, maybe two more years. Any significant acquisition we make to improve our OT situation should be for an LT.

If Willis wants to sign here for close to the vet minimum and we decide to take the cap hit and cut Jansen now to make room for him, and draft Oher at 13, then fine - thats probably our best option if we want a really solid OT plan. Otherwise, we're giving up on Heyer way too soon.

Bingo. The Jason Taylor releasing was a unbelievably odd deal. Why sign this guy in the first place? Why not include this offseason stuff upfront so we wouldn't waste a 2nd round and a 6th round pick?

I just don't understand why more aren't irate about the latest Vinny and Danny move. Wasteful and very odd move by the Redskins FO.....again.

If Willis wants to sign here for close to the vet minimum and we decide to take the cap hit and cut Jansen now to make room for him, and draft Oher at 13, then fine - thats probably our best option if we want a really solid OT plan. Otherwise, we're giving up on Heyer way too soon.
You left out the part where others in the org. don't agree with that thought.
Although some in the organization believe third-year tackle Stephon Heyer could be better than average as a full-time starter, others are not so sure, and the consensus is that the Redskins must attempt to find another option from outside the complex.
I think a lot of you are taking London Fletcher for granted. Guys gonna be 34 this season and obviously he isn't getting younger. If Willis really is a legit starting RT (and ironically in seeing the Seahawks/Cowboys game he seemed to be one of two guys that wasn't getting his ass handed to him) then that will free us up to draft Maualgua use him as an OLB and groom him for the MLB spot. I think right now the best COA (course of action) is as follows:

- Call Evans right now and work out a contract
- Sign Willis to about 3 million per year, backloaded contract of course
- Draft Maualuga
- Draft a C/G Prospect in the third round

point blank the guy wasnt 100% on being dedicated this off-season, with that said, save the cap room...

but i AM NOT, sold of Daniels starting. he just doesnt get to the QB as he once did, which seems like a long time ago.

IMO... we may be in trouble opposite of carter right now for the long haul that is the NFL season.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to actually point this out.

Didn't we know that last offseason before we gave up a 2nd and a 6th round pick for him? Are we just learning that he wants to spend time at home during the offseason?

Portis, ST, and others did the same thing.
