Smoot, I think you are correct about making the team. but the announcers spent time talking about who was the suprise cut which they had no idea. Which is why I kept listening. Announcers probably got it wrong.

Ok, I think I actually found it. On ESPN 980 under Cerrato interviews on Sept. 2 he had a 10 min. interview with Sheehan and Sheehan states that Zorn said there would be a suprise cut or two and he asks Cerrato about that and he,Cerrato, said...there could be a suprise.

It comes at the last min.

I think Betts or Cartwright is gone and we're keeping two of Mason, Alridge, and Dorsey.

I'm also hoping we can trade Monty to Carolina for a low round pick and Dixon makes the squad.

I just don't see Betts getting the axe, not when Zorn said not too long ago he's going to be the 3rd down back. Betts is the more complete back over Mason too.

Yoder replaced by Eddie Williams would be interesting. Yoder is our blocking TE, but he's not much of a blocker.

Yeah we have to keep this in mind. My only concern with Betts being the 3rd down back is that I don't think he's good at getting the 3rd and 3 type of plays. Betts is not the man I would pick to rush the ball in any type of goal line situation or goal line offense needing to get the 1st down to sustain a drive. He failed misserably in that roll. However he is a great blocker for passing downs on 3rd down and great at catching the ball out of the back field. Which if I'm being honest with myself....Mason will not take Betts job right now. but I still think Mason is a better runner then Betts.

Im thinking Portis, Betts, Rock, and 1 of the 3(Mason, Alridge, Dorsey). Im gonna guess its Alridge/Dorsey, so we finally get a real change of pace. I dont think Mason is gonna make it...again.

Ok, Here is Zorn's interview:

ESPN 980 Audio Vault - Play Now

I listened and although Zorn is sometimes hard to listen to or understand with all his evasiveness I think he actually said..."Don't be suprised about some guys getting cut who will be on someone elses roster cause they can play in this league. Just because they don't fit our system doesn't mean they can't play elswhere." or something to that effect. I almost got the feeling he was refering to rookies and that they will get picked up somewhere else but it could mean a vet who has been with the team but has struggled these last 2 yrs I guess.

The fact that Betts is not reliable at getting short yardage would not be a reason to elevate anyone on the current roster over him; that's because we don't have a good short yardage back on the team.

I hope the Skins can somehow find a good short yardage back and add him to the team.

That sucks, if they know who they are cutting they should do it today so those players hit the wire early and have a shot of landing elsewhere.

DB, can I ask why you are concerned about these guys having a shot somewhere else. It probably sounds heartless, but for guys who get cut, and the Skins still want to keep, say like Colt/Chase or Alridge/Dorsey/Mason, I would rather they stay near our organization if they are PS eligible, rather than going somewhere else. Even with that though, at this point if an organization has its eyes on a player of ours, I would imagine they would take him regardless of when he is cut.

Everyone has their underdog that they like to root for. Usually its a good player who ends up getting caught in the numbers game. IMO I dont see us keeping a QB on the PS. I like Colt and at the same time i like what i saw of Chase and with teams scrambling to find a backup QB id like to see one of these guys get a shot even if it is elsewhere after we cut him. Same with the RB position.

Well, it appears it's a tactic used by at least one other team.

I also found this nugget:
"One reason for the secrecy is the Steelers may be trying to slide running back Isaac Redman from the active roster to the practice squad. Redman, an undrafted rookie from Bowie State, was the surprise star of training camp and scored three of the Steelers' five touchdowns rushing during the preseason."

but ... but ... won't all 31 other teams be busy holding their breath and watching the waiver wire to see when Mason is available??

Zorn, Redskins Face 'Tough' Roster Decisions

Zorn said the roster decisions this year are tougher than last year.

"The backups are the ones that take a while to hone in on," he said.

Running back is one position that is being closely scrutinized.

Last offseason, the Redskins sought a change of pace back to complement Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts and Rock Cartwright. They brought in Anthony Alridge and Dominique Dorsey to provide more quickness out of the backfield and on special teams.

Alridge flashed his speed from the get-go.
But as soon as he Alridge fumbled a kickoff against Jacksonville, resulting in a Jaguars touchdown, it was thought to be a devastating blow to his roster chances.

Alridge rebounded to have a solid game the rest of the night.

He’s still in the conversation, Zorn said.“The fumble is a concern, and I saw his reaction,” Zorn said.

“We put him back in there and he didn’t have the same result again. So it will be a longer discussion than just ‘No’ or ‘Yeah.’ It won’t be something that we just gloss over.”

Marcus Mason, who had led the Redskins in preseason rushing yards each of the last three seasons, saw limited action in the preseason finale due to a rib injury.

Still, Mason had a “very good preseason,” Zorn said.

Agreed, but I would also rather have a young healthy RB to be developed for the future, Mason, over Betts. If all Betts is being used for is 3rd down then teach Mason how to block the damn pass rush and dump Betts.

and this is why the team may still be high on him. If he went back in and couldn't get past the fumble then he would be gone, but he didn't he actually had a decent game and caught a pass out of the back field from Chase, stopped on a dime, changed directions and ran 30 yrds down field and got out of bounds to stop the clock to save time outs. The 2 min drill at the end of the game actually looked good.

Um, I'm pretty sure Mason can tackle also, it was his blocking skills in the back field he had issues with. and the more I think about it Rock's not that great at pass blocking either. He has whiffed many times or got steamed rolled by a DE. I just wish they would have given Mason more of a chance at KR last night but they were looking at Alridge. However I thought I saw Mason making sure Alridge didn't run the ball out when it was deep in the endzone a couple of times.

Well unfortunatly you got him. He is going to be the 3rd down back. You know the down in which they will either be trying to get 3 or 4 yrds which when teams stacked the line similar to goal line Betts got stuffed, or he's back there pass blocking cause we need like 7yrds or more. I understand maybe your meaning Betts would be run out of the back field to catch a pass but if it's a blitz he might have to stay in to help block. Especially if it's longer then 10 yrds that we need to get. Most teams would blitz in that situation.

Re: Vinny tips his hand on the final 53

I wonder if one of the "shocking" cuts could be Todd Collins. Yes, he's heads and shoulders above Brennan and Daniel, but this is definitely his last year here. If Cerrato felt really confident that Brennan has #1/#2 potential and Daniel has #2/#3 potential, and if either of them hit the practice squad another team would take them up, then keeping both Brennan and Daniel could be smart... assuming Cerrato is more concerned about the long-term than the short term. And it would be an especially prudent move should the front office determine it necessary to replace Zorn after the season with a WCO coach like Shanahan or Holmgren.

I really dont think it'll happen, though. Just idle speculation. Chase went undrafted and chose to sign with the Redskins, knowing full well we were established at the QB position. Ultimately, he hasn't done enough to beat Colt Brennan and he's still 5'10 tops... he'll be safe on the practice squad.

Isn't it a bit premature to label Alridge injury prone? He was a little dinged in training camp, but I don't think that makes him injury prone necessarily. Also, he's roughly the same size as Darren Sproles. Neither guy is gonna run through too many tackles, but neither guy is going to get caught from behind very often either.

As much as I like Mason, he's a poor man's Portis/Betts. It would be fun to have a return guy/change of pace back who is a threat to take it to the house any time they touch the ball. Moss has been the only real speed threat on our team for a while.

On April 27, 2008, Alridge signed a contract with the Denver Broncos as a free agent.[5] He was put on the injured reserve by the Broncos following the 53-man cut, ending his season. The Broncos waived him on February 11, 2009.

The one thing that people don't know is that he was a WR in Houston (college) before converting to RB. He could definitely make the team.

I think Mason is a better player then Betts. I don't like Betts much at all since he fumbled the game away in Dallas 3-4 years ago.

I think Aldridge should be cut....

He held the ball exposed in his right hand on that kick off. Just seemed to be begging for a fumble. Definitely a good change of pace for the other team when u turn the ball over and the result is 6 points.
