Mine and other folks on the board sleeper (now that Luck won't come out) can be had in the 3rd or 4th round. I really like this kid better than the guys in the 1st round.

Question is, how many round 3 or 4 QB's make it big time in the NFL?! Rhetorical question of course. I'm sure most educated football fans know the answer already. |

Doesn't mean you need to spend your first round pick there. Pouncey is good but, to me, a guy who is neither a dominant C nor G (just solid at both) is not worth the #10 overall pick |

That's also why I say we trade down to 16 - 20 and draft him and also add another 2nd rounder possibly. Think about a Williams/Pouncey future! I really dont think we will draft a WR |
SS have you heard anything on Rex? Will he be back and anything on the draft? Like our top prospects?
Last I heard, they were working on a contract extension for Rex. Probably two years. He'll be a bridge to the next QB. Current speculation is Quinn at #10 in the draft. Way too early to really know though |
Re: Skins have 10th overall selection. Who do we pick?
^ so Rex more than likely is the guy next season then.. I thought he played pretty well honestly.
Quinn is a good player I wouldn't mind another pass rusher |
Re: Skins have 10th overall selection. Who do we pick?
do we take newton if he is on the board? i would hate to have passed on him, unless it meant taking mallett. i think we get our quarterback and worry about everything else while we groom him. once hes ready to play in a year, we have a team around him ready to roll.
|
Re: Skins have 10th overall selection. Who do we pick?
Also, walter football mocks us newton in the first and WR Torrey Smith in the second. Im not from around DC, but any thoughts on smith? Is he worthy of a second round pick? What is his skill set?

Re: Skins have 10th overall selection. Who do we pick?
I am praying we don't draft newton. A 1 year wonder IMO
|
Re: Skins have 10th overall selection. Who do we pick?
I am praying we don't draft newton. A 1 year wonder IMO
Newton is Sanchez from a different system.
Physically, he may be the best athlete I've ever seen, and he can play quarterback at the next level if he wants to. He has a compact release and throws accurately to the edges. But NFL defenses are going to confuse the crap out of Cam Newton (much like Sanchez), since half his college experience came at the JUCO level. Newton's NFL prospects are long and full of love/hate. Compares favorably to Jake Locker, whose career will be very short and full of erratic passes. I would draft Pat Devlin before him, although they are not at all the same quarterback. Devlin hardly ever goes down the field at Delaware. Newton goes down the field all the time at Auburn. What they have in common is that are the two most accurate passers in the draft. |
Re: Skins have 10th overall selection. Who do we pick?
Even though I would be happy with Quinn at #10. I really think we need to trade down, and try to feel some more gaps on our Oline, and defense then going after 1 big time player early..

Re: Skins have 10th overall selection. Who do we pick?
THANK YOU!!!!! You win in the trenches!!!!!!
That saying might be overstated. It's no doubt important but you see teams all over the league with average to decent lines and great QB's going deep into the playoffs year after year (Bears, Chiefs, Eagles, Colts, ~Seahawks, Falcons, Steelers, Packers). While the teams with great lines like the 49ers and Browns sit at home and watch the playoffs after sub .500 seasons. Heck even we had a great line in the middle part of the previous decade and yet the best we did was get to the second round of the playoffs. Either way Smoot hit home the main point. We don't need to spend a first round pick every year to rebuild our offensive line and even though Shanahan has traditionally done it with second day picks the fact of the matter is that we'll probably see as many as 2 major free agents come in here to play on the offensive line. Davin Joesph seems like the most likely candidate. Honestly though if we were to use a first round pick in the trenches I would much rather go for someone on the front 5 of our defense as those guys don't usually last on draft day. Zone blocking offensive lineman on the other hand frequently slip through the cracks, mainly because they're viewed as undersized. |
Re: Skins have 10th overall selection. Who do we pick?
Cam Newton is NOT our answer. Trade down! We need more picks, and there are plenty of good olinemen to be had later in the draft.
I'd like to see us trade for Tebow, but I understand that's a pipe dream. We aren't going to be contenders next year (if there is one) and Tebow is the type that will need a full season before he truly gets it. |
Re: Skins have 10th overall selection. Who do we pick?
ahh if we get Quinn i'll be the happiest fan ever! SS i'm new to the forum do u have an inside connection to the management of the Skins? Mann if we get Quin!! with Orakpo... don't forget guys.. we still have our 2nd rounder, another 4th rounder for Campbell this year... and then obviously our 3rd to.. so we can get quality players those rounds but we need the BEST player available on the board, for that high of a pick.. I think we need to get our defense stronger in this draft because our D is getting old.. Fletcher will probably retire in a year or 2.. and i've been hearing Mcintosh won't be back next year.. we're already down a strong LB.. if we can manage to get Quinn.. he's suppose to be top 5 pick and has comparisons of Demarcus Ware and Patrick Willis.. Put him on our D and with Orakpo.. opposiing teams offenses will be running for ther lives!! We can get Tyrod Taylor in 2nd rd if we need a stud QB.. and O-line in FA with WR in the FA... and try to get a stud RB?? what u guys think..

Our 4th for JC comes next year. We have no 3rd. I have inside connections (though not as strong as they used to be) through more than a decade of working in sports media. So I'm able to provide info here, I'd say maybe 70-80% of the time I'm correct. Things change. Sometimes I'm wrong. It happens |

I know it's going to be a lot of people who disagree with me but I think Cameron Newton should be our pick. This kid has great size, a great arm, great accuracy, and great mobility. The only thing he doesn't have is a lot of experience. If we draft him we will have to let him sit on the bench for a year or maybe two so he can develop. If he we can get this kid to play up to his potential he will lead this team to the playoffs year in and year out. |

A NT would be great but methinks none this year are worth a #10 pick. Therefore I think we might get the most bang for our buck by drafting an OLB like Quinn or Miller to rush opposite Orakpo. We could get our own Harrison/Woodley thing going. If by some magic Fairley fell to us at DE, he'd be a good choice, too. |

what you didn't mention is that he also apparently has great intangibles. From what I've read he's a winner, a leader, he loves to play football, and he has a great overall mentality. |

If you could provide some links about good articles on Cam Newton I'd love to read up on him. Everything I've heard suggests the opposite, he's probably not ready for NFL defenses because he's had one good year at the collegiate level and before that it was JUCO for him, and I still have sneaking doubts that he was in on his dad's pay for play scheme. And in various tidbits I've read I feel like he gets the idea that he's God's gift to football. I haven't read anything concrete though but I just have my doubts, I'd love to know what is more factually accurate about him than just relying on various tidbits that I hear randomly. I'm not worried at all about his football skills, I want to know what he's like off the field. |

I'm not against picking up Newton. He's the next Vick, but I think he has a better arm.
I'm just worried about if we pick up Newton, and then don't work on other areas of the football team. If we can get Newton with our 2nd round pick that would be outstanding, or if we can trade back and get him later while picking up another pick or two. I would be happy as well. |
Re: Skins have 10th overall selection. Who do we pick?
Even though I really like Kellan Moore, if Newton is available when we pick we'd be fools to pass him up.

I'll pass on Newton. Show me one of these "athletes that happen to be qb's" that has been able to win on the big stage? Give me a stout offensive line and a big ol' pocket passer with good feet and pocket presence. As for Torrey Smith, he's a 6'1" 200lb 4.35-4.40 wideout who is also a pretty explosive kickoff return man. He had injury issues early this season but rebounded and had a pretty good season once Danny O'Brien took over at QB. Hasn't been the primary punt returner, but we really don't need that with Banks. I think a second round pick on him might be a bit of a reach, but we'll see what people think after the combine. In the video, take note of some of the throws #5 Danny O'Brien makes. He'll be a RS Soph this year. He may be the best qb the Terps have had since Boomer. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A_6n_eoI2o&feature=related[/ame] As for Dalton: Bottom line: Overall, Dalton's physical skills might get him drafted late, but I would not draft him. I would sign him as a free agent with the intention of keeping him on the practice squad for a season to see if he can develop. However, in the long term I do not believe he will ever develop enough to be a good starting QB in the NFL and will likely have trouble carving out a long term NFL career. Newton also can throw the ball with power and accuracy. I think unless he explodes against oregon, the risk factor still makes him available at 10. Snyder lives for a pick like that and shannahan loves quarterbacks like that. I dont think he is as much like vick as he has potential to be vince young with a better arm. Build the team around him, repair the defense through FA, sign a slot/#2 receiver like Sims-Walker, and draft OL and Wr's |

Agree to disagree. I'm not suggesting he won't become a good qb, I'm just not interested in taking the chance that he won't. I don't see him becoming this team or anyone else franchise qb. |

As it stands right now I think we should be able to get him 15 through 20. If does poorly in the National Championship he will fall to the second round. I believe a lot people are looking for reasons to dislike this kid. That is why I'm confident that one bad performance will cause his value to drop. |

Re: Skins have 10th overall selection. Who do we pick?
Give me a QB for the next 10 years. Specifically Jake Locker. Drafting a Guard or Center at 10 is a huge reach, especially when you consider the fact that we not only have a second round pick this year but the last Second Round Guard drafted by Shanahan, our very own Lennie Friedman. For better or worse free agency will address the immediate concerns along the O-Line.
You bastards. You **** teases. You wretched ingrates! This happens every year. And this is not just directed at gafinfan. This is all of you! Even though we weren't looking for a QB in 2008 we still had people saying that the 2008 QB class was terrible (*cough* Matt Ryan Joe Flacco *cough). Wait till next year they said. Then 2009 roles around (Josh Freeman, Matt Stafford). Oh no that class is terrible, wait till next year that class will be much better. 2010 roles around, the first year we really start looking for a new QB. Now I can deal with 2008 and 2009. However I was promised in writing that the 2011 QB class was going to be amazing. I was frequently told that 2011 was the year we would have our pick from a flurry of QB's. 2011 was going to be the year of the Quarterback. So you know what we dealt with not getting Bradford and McCoy and maybe we lucked out on Clausen. Heck even Tebow looks like a potential Franchise QB at this point. And now it's 2011 and what do I hear? Wait till 2012. I don't know about you guys but I'm starting to sense some sort of pattern here (except with Ruhskisn, as he has remained consistent from last year on his promise to me of QB nirvana). At this rate we're not going to get a QB worth protecting until Trent is retired along with the 7 other first round fat boys you guys are drafting over the course of the next 7 years (4 OL, 3 DL). Now if you'll excuse me I have to go dial 911 as I'm experiencing chest problems as well as shooting pains in my arm. PS - It should go without saying but just in case, this piece is written with a tongue in cheek tone. I believe none of you to be wrechted ingrates or cock teases. Nor are any of you bastards.
:food-smil :), I'm cool! Maybe I should have said it differently, there are and will be QB's picked in round one, Without Luck being there imo there are no other QB's that should carry a #1 grade. Which does not mean that there are not some very good prospects out there; some of which will be picked in the first round. I see 4 or 5 quality players with NFL type ability that are not #1 round grades, which is all I'm saying! Tom Brady was taken in the 6th round for a reason, Johnny U was cut from the Giants for a reason, the Steelers passed on Dan Marino for a reason and these are just a very few of the many screw ups that GMs make! Lets take Locker and or Kaepernick, two guys that some really like with strong arms and some success, imho both are gangly and undisciplined, who when they get to this level without alot of training and support will get killed because of the way they play. Is the team that spends what it takes to pay a top ten QB going to have the patience to let either guy learn and grow or will they throw him to the wolves, as Beck was handled by Camreon and then screwed because of it? John Beck was not a bad prospect who imo should have gone in the third round and sit for at least a year or two ala Arron Rogers and then you would have a quality QB. Will he ever be one now? Shanny seems to think so but really who knows? I still like the guy and he does have upside plus he won't be a INT machine like the guy you had playing the last 3 games, jm2c. One guy I really like is Greg McElroy, quality guy, smart, can manage a game, has a live arm, WCType, and most of all a winner! Should he go in round one? Hell no! But sombody is going to get a good one imvho if they pick him. |

Do you feel better about the quality of a draft prospect so long as you reach for him? That would explain why you feel that you can't find good quarterbacks later on in the draft. |

Wow, I liked Von Miller after seeing him play just one game.. But after watching his most recent, man this guy is going to be better than Orakpo.
Not quite as efficient in terms of rushing the passer, but can this guy ever tackle! Draft Von Miller at #10 and we'll have the two boys from Texas (different schools) for the next 5 years. |

Saying Newton has the intangibles of Jamarcus is just incorrect. Jamarcus was boneheaded from his first day at LSU to his last day in Oakland, Cam Newton is in his own league compared to JR. With that being said, he's not for the Redskins and it would pain me to watch him fail under Shanahan. |
