Maybe that's the case, but I refuse to believe Grossman and Beck were the best we could have done. Add in the McNabb debacle and you really have to question the decision making that's been done with the QB position, especially for a QB "guru" like Mike Shanahan. |

It may not, but the alternatives were not that good. Maybe Garcia, Gradkowski, Bulger, Orton? There are too many to list, but the scrapheap QBs don't look that good. We might be sitting at 5-4 or 4-5 and be in the running for 8-8. But you also have to consider that a FA QB this season would be very behind due to lockout. Unlike Carson Palmer, he probably would have not had any previous contact with Shanahan. Hence, the pickup might struggle in a manner similar to how Kerry Collins struggled. Here's a fairly comprehensive list to look at: KFFL - 2010 NFL Free Agents |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Dolphins)
The larger point is that any quarterback would have struggled with this supporting cast.
And I don't know that Mike Shanahan's status as a quarterback guru was necessarily a given. Like everybody else in this league, he was right on some guys, wrong on others. I'd say Cutler has turned out to be as good as advertised. He created the environment for Elway to get over the hump, and perhaps made him a more complete QB. With Beck, I just think you had to see what he could do. We saw it. He won't cut it. Does that mean Mike Shanahan has lost it? I don't think so. Maybe he knows that it's early in the rebuild process and for the first year or so he wanted to try some things out knowing that if they don't work, it won't matter much because this team was being dismantled from the top-down anyway. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Dolphins)
Before all these injuries I'd argue this offense had some potential, and with a competent QB we could have been more competitive. Right now given all the injuries we'd probably be in a somewhat similar situation, but when I see Grossman throwing dumb pick after dumb pick or Beck dumping it off every play or getting sacked, I can't help but wonder.
In the end Shanahan is 0-3 on his QB choices here. Not good any way you look at it. |

But I think it's quite clear that their pickings were slim and would have been pretty big gambles in their own right, i.e AJ Feeley, Bulger, Leinart, TJax, Troy Smith. More likely than not, we'd be killing Shanahan if one of those guys were starting instead of Brecks. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Dolphins)
But would this mystery QB that Shanahan didn't choose be the quarterback of the future for this team? Would it have been yet another short-term fix? Yeah, it might make us feel better in the here and now, get us a few more wins -- again, in an alternate reality that (1.) doesn't have the injury problem we have, (2.) has a magically transformed offensive line that Shanahan hasn't had the time to build, (3.) has dynamic wide receivers to throw to, and (4.) has an effective running game.
I maintain that under these exact circumstances any other quarterback taken over the past two offseasons couldn't possibly make the results any different, and that the franchise quarterback we're all hoping for is playing in college right now and wasn't available to Shanahan anyway. |

But he had no upside. The best Bulger would give next year would either be the same or worse that he would have given this year. I think Shanahan wanted to test out guys with some upside. He probably thought these guys had the best chance to turn into the second coming of Gannon...or at least something serviceable like Plummer. He probably deluded himself a bit, but I don't hold that too hard against him. It happens to everyone. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Dolphins)
Unaccustomed as I am to being a voice of sweetness and light, I will say that I think the Redskins are on a much better path today than they were 2 years ago. They have not arrived at the end of the path (playoff contender on a regular basis) and the path is not level and paved every step of the way.
But this one is a better path than existed at the time Allen and Shanahan came to town. They conducted two drafts and two off-seasons. They did not hit home-runs with every draft pick, but they acquired good contributors in addition to two players who might turn out to be excellent (Williams and Kerrigan). Most importantly, they did not succumb to the temptation to spend a ton of money to bring in high-priced free agents whose major motivation in coming here was to get paid and sit on their fat wallets. That was the path this team was on for about 10 years prior to Allen/Shanahan... Just because that is the way Allen/Shanahan behaved in their two off-seasons, I think the path they are on now is far better than the one the Skins were on 2 years ago. Yes, the McNabb trade blew up in their face. However, that is not an indictment of the strategic path they have the team on. That is the failure of a tactical move they made. Another tactical failure was the blunderous way that Shanahan handled the "McNabb situation" last year. That could not have helped solidify the idea that "we are all in this together" among players in the locker room and it will take a bit of time to get that stink out of there. The team has a lot of picks this year in the draft - - and might get more if they compensatory ones for losing free agents to other teams. Let me assume they have 10 picks in the draft as an example. If that is the case, then the real test of the path that the team is on will be to see how well the Redskins' scouting department can come up with good value picks in at least 7 of those 10 selections. The path of "build through the draft and make judicious use of free agency" is a good path to follow. HOWEVER, it is the scouting department that has to deliver a solid draft board year after year in order for that path to get you to the playoffs. To be polite, the Skins drafts of the years from about 2002 - 2008 left a whole lot to be desired. Was that the fault of the owner/GM - - or was it the scouting department? Starting two years ago, the owner butted out of the draft and the GM/coach are reputedly good at team building, so the spotlight now is on the scouts.
I am indicting the strategic path they are on. The tactical moves have been hit and miss, like most teams. The Kerrigans, Banks, Hankersons, Roccas are all hits at this point. There has been about 15-20 personnel "misses" in the last year in a half, from retentions to releases, from start/sit decisions to acquisitions. That's been a significant part of the recent failures, but a stretch like that could happen to any team. The Patriots probably have 10+ personnel whiffs in the last two years. The reasoning for taking the path we had has been incredibly suspect the whole way. There's never been a clear vision for success, which is why Mike Shanahan goes into pressers and says asinine things. The Redskins have managed to win more small battles under Allen/Shanahan than they did under Cerrato/Zorn (except on the field), but the war is still being fought against themselves. The Redskins can't get out of their way long enough to make positive progress. Now, I am taking a wait and see approach as to what good has come out of the last two years. I don't think the Redskins need to clean house. I do think they need to change some or all of the on-field staff to improve the product. But I think Allen should stay, I think the top executives should stay, and I think Allen should promote or hire a chief player personnel VP to report directly to him that isn't on the coaching staff. Shanahan's contract explicitly states that he's entitled to all the money in the deal and can walk if the Redskins do that, which is why he's the giant obstacle in this. |

Well, if they had stuck with Rex and put Helu in right away..........we might have stole one of the two previous games. Instead, we were absolutely non-competitive with the Dormant Mormon. |

Why would firing the gruesome twosome Mike and Kyle = return of the cokehead? Allen doesn't have any particular connection to Mike so there's no reason for him to get the boot or resign. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Dolphins)
Yeah the beck move killed us and it seemed like the team didn't have much faith in the guy either
|
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Dolphins)
Just as far as unrestricted free agents go, Matt Hasselbeck, Shaun Hill, Alex Smith, Tarvaris Jackson, Drew Stanton, Byron Leftwich and Matt Moore have all been unrestricted free agents since Shanahan had the job here. Caleb Hanie was an RFA who could have been plucked from the Bears for zero compensation. A competitive trade offer could have plucked Matt Flynn from Green Bay. Kevin Kolb was terribly overpriced and would have been a bad short-term acquisition, but he was available.
No one on the above list contains magical qualities that would have fixed the 2011 season (whether they could have kept it from being derailed is another issue), but they are all better than John Beck, and about half of them are better than Rex Grossman. I'm sympathetic to the idea that it didn't matter in the long run, but the Redskins could and should have done better on offensive personnel than they have. Whether they could have done so much better as to build an annual winner is debatable, I think. What's not debatable is that they couldn't have built an annual winner while taking the strategic path they did. |

I thought the skins made a mistake not going after flynn the guy is better than what WE have no you would think, heck he can't be worse

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Dolphins)
I forgot Vince Young as well.
With Vince Young, this team may still be very bad, but it would be excitingly bad. Or it might actually be a lot better. But that's not the point. |
Maybe Shanahan feels that given his knowledge and experience with QBs he could save that for last while focusing on other areas that needed improvement first?
His excuses for the recent losing streak is that the supporting cast is consistently failing his hand picked QBs.
Whether that's accurate or not (and since I'm not doing game reviews...), Shanahan is wrong one way or another. Either he failed to build even an adequate supporting cast that can support Rex Grossman or the next QB, or he's excusing poor quarterback play by miscasting the blame. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Dolphins)
Mike Shanahan is not a GM. He's a head coach. Bruce Allen should be the one in charge of retooling the roster. Allen would have never brought in Beck or Grossman.

I'm sure that must have been his mindset... I'm just frustrated with another season quickly going down the drain, and it's tiring to have another year of crappy QB play. I acknowledge the injuries have been absolutely killer. Who knows, without all the injuries maybe we're in the 7-9 win range. I guess big picture we weren't a playoff caliber team to begin with, and this is a rebuilding project we have to have some patience with. Still, I'm sure even Shanahan didn't expect to be this bad in year 2. We haven't seen this level of futility in back to back years under one coach since Norv in 94-95 when he went 3-13 and 6-10. |

We would probably be talking about how the injuries & lack of depth were keeping us from being a playoff team. We'd be mediocre though & the other personel decisions would likely be the same. My interpretation of Allen/Shanny thus far; it was a rebuilding project wrapped in a vet QB facade. The initial facade, McNabb, didn't work out, so now there's nothing to hide how ugly it is. This is why I question whether we were truly rebuilding last year. Had McNabb worked out somewhat, we still would be without a QB of the future on the roster, and whatever McNabb's success would have been short. I think I'd feel better right now if we had not traded for McNabb and would have acquired a young QB this year (2nd or later rounds). My only hope is that next year, the supporting cast would be good enough to allow for a rookie to start right away (a la Dalton). I just hope MS does a good job at picking a QB, as someone pointed out, he's 0-3 so far. |

McNabb trade was a calulated risk which fail...at least he smart enough to realize and after a half season got him outta there. Much like he was smart enough to get rid of Albert. He can be criticized for not taking a young, developmental QB, but if he's thinking the better prospects are coming out in 12, he's thinking why burn a pick for someone who will get killed for a year and then be immediately replaced? Well he is right, this draft is stacked with much better QB prospects. You still got to give him time, because if he picks his guy and then we are much improved on offense and QB play....I really think this is his and Bruce's plan. |

Newsflash to all you kids bitching about our two shitty QBs:
1) You can't force Free Agents to Washington so stop with the Vince Young(and others) talk. 2) Who's to say Hasslebeck, Bulger, Jackson or any other crappy QB you all manage to name would do any better than Rex or Beck? 3) Speaking of Hasslebeck, why would you sign a 36 year old QB to a 3 year contract worth about 8 mil per season with no rookie in the stable? Like I've said before, you can't turn shit into sugar so stop acting like Shanny had all these great options at the QB spot. He didn't. Had he brought in any of those guys you all mentioned and they played shitty, you'd be bitching about that too. Yes we have god awful talent at the QB spot right now, but lets see the pieces we have and are building on. We aren't going to be competitive until about 2013 to be honest. I'm going to chalk up 2012 as a learning curve for whatever rookie QB we bring in. |

Understood, he's not going to throw them under the bus. He just drew way more attention to it in the offseason than needed. I mean, was Beck solely responsible for his name being put out there in the offseason? Maybe his strategy was to set Beck up for success by publicly saying he was capable of starting. What he did though ultimately was bring more attention to himself than either of the QBs. |

Gabbert has done nothing to save the Jags offense yet. Ok, he has no talent around him, but isn't a franchise QB supposed to make at least some noise with little talent(i.e Sam Bradford didn't produce much, but his poise was constantly mentioned). Dalton - The dude is like Drew Brees. Top pick in the second round. How many people would have honestly, REALLY HONESTLY, taken him at #10 or #16 before they had the benefit of hindsight? And we have to consider how much AJ Green is helping him out as well. He might be just a little overrated. |

So you advocate picking Dalton or Ponder up at the #10 spot?...lol ..and you have the nerve to talk about Shanny not knowing what he's doing? Look in the mirror. Also, I hope you realize that if we picked him, that means no Ryan Kerrigan or several of the other players currently on our roster. So you think having a rookie QB on a even shittier team was more valuable than increasing the overall quality of the team? Stop being a Dan Snyder. Once you stop putting high expectations on this team, the better off you will be. You aren't going to have Shanny come out publicly and say our QBs suck even if he thinks so. He's also not going to say this team is trash and is in need of a major overhaul. The QB will come, give it time and take a deep breathe. This team wasn't going anywhere even with a rookie QB or vet. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Dolphins)
Why would you trade a 2nd rounder for a washed up QB from your divisional opponent?
I think people feel that there were better options at QB period. And unless you know for a fact that ALL of these QBs didn't want to come to DC, we never know what was going on behind close doors. We all know that these were going to be rebuilding years. But Shanahan has made some huge questionable decisions at QB. He could have made better decisions and I think fans expected better from someone that has such a big reputation as he does.
I was never in favor of the McNabb trade so you are preaching to the choir, and I've stated that this has been Shanny's biggest mistake. I think Smoot's reporting back then stated that VY wanted to go to Philly and the reports were even out back then prior to the open of free agency that he was heading there. Can you imagine a oft injured Hasslebeck behind this OL?...lol THIRTY SIX YEARS OLD with a 8mil/year salary. No thanks, but I'll take Rex/Beck. It would be one thing if this team only lacked a QB but that isn't so. Also to say those QBs would fair any better with this talent on offense is a huge stretch. If Tavaris Jackson couldn't get it done in Minnesota with Rice/Harvin/Peterson, what on earth makes you think he can do it with our scrubs?...LOL |
