The question is, what will the fans think if a QB isn't selected in the first round or two or three next year? We sure as hell were freaking out when it happened this year.
Last year? I was not suprised only because Jake Locker was already off the board, and we never seemed particularly thrilled with Gabbert, which with hindsight seems like a good move now. on the other hand, after a year of mediocre to downright dreadful quarterback play, we need our guy now, so that he is ready to go in a year.
I was one of the few who didn't freak out about the 'skins not drafting a QB this year. I'm glad we addressed other areas of need and had the patience to wait until the next draft when we would have a better selection of QBs to choose from.

But, I think this season is much different. We HAVE to draft a QB. IF we don't, then I will start questioning the sanity of our front office. However, the FO has done a great job with player acquisitions, so I can't see them NOT drafting a QB unless a Bona fide, young, franchise QB is found in free agency.
I share your views except that I can't imagine finding a young, franchise QB in free agency.

I think that we'll have a rare opportunity to land one of three top notch prospects in Luck, Barkley, and RGIII and I'm optimistic that the Skins FO will come through for us.

skinsfaninok 12-22-2011 10:08 AM

If the rams get the 1st pick which I think they will, I'd offer 3 first for Andrew Luck, at least 2. Call me crazy and an idiot but most teams that need a QB will be thinking the same thing.. Luck is a manning type elite QB prospect and if u land this guy we are set at QB for years to come.

I don't think you're crazy at all.

To even consider doing what you suggest, one must first believe that Luck is a rare prospect in the Peyton Manning mold. Like you, I do.

Secondly, one must believe that a QB of that quality can make a huge difference for your team, turning losses into wins and making your team a perennial playoff contender. I do.

So, I would offer as many as three firsts, if necessary.

P.S. If the Skins had Andrew Luck, then D.C. would become a prime destination for top FA's. That's how the Skins could sign the equivalent of a first round WR talent to pair with Luck.

Exactly K I, if we had Luck just imagine the impact he would make on the team on/off the field. We would become a Big time draw and of course a winner again. I really think he's the best QB that's came out since manning, will he be an Elite QB? I truly think so

I predict that he will announce that he's entering the draft but he will only play for the Washington Redskins.

Yep, heard it on the radio. He would look good in burgundy and gold, close to the USC uniforms.

I think Barkley will say that he's leaving, BUT will not hire an agent incase he has a change of heart to return, which he won't so ultimately 1 month from now he will be in the draft.

Exactly! I can't even think of one free agent QB right now that I'd truly want for the 'skins (and I'm not going to include Brees because we all know N.O. will sign him.)

Really you think veteran super stars are going to want to come here because we picked a over hyped rookie. Even in my own job if a new analyst came on board fresh out of Harvard I still be like ok lets see what you can do in the real world before I start kissing the ground he/she walks on.

Some of you guys are putting so much stock in Luck just because. Why is he so great? I have no idea.I only know what the media has feed me; I am not a professional QB scout nor is anyone on here.If you showed me game tapes and career stats of RGIII and Charlie Ward (both Heisman Trophy winners) then told me to pick which would be a NFL star or at least a high draft pick I couldn't give you a educated answer (assuming both were coming out at the same time). So many folks on here myself included thought Cam Newton was going to be a bust, right now I take him over anyone in the 2012 draft because I know he can do it at a high level in the NFL. I have said this before Ricky Williams is a great example, coming out of school you think he was JC but when it came draft time he was not even the first RB off the board. Not to mention his career has been lack luster at best. ALSO it is lot easier to succeeded at being a RB in the NFL then a QB, QB probably has the highest failure rate of all positions.

Honestly the bar is set so high for Luck right now that anything short of a SB victory his first season people will be calling him a bust. The media loves to build you up then tear you down. The best thing for the media would be for Luck to come in with all this praise as the number one and then completly fall on his face come gameday, they would have a field day with that story.

I would think it be a positive if Barkley stays that just moves those guys up one more notch in the draft.

If I was RGIII one the reasons I stay in NCAA would be the #1 pick next year seeing that Luck has it locked up this year.

Yeah, all of the 'experts' are expecting him to stay.. If RGIII and Jones also stay that makes our picking in the top 10 somewhat irrelevant. That scenario would point to trading down, maybe a couple of times, in order to continue to build depth and would make QB in free agency or trade a reality. That scenario also sets us up for what Kyle said yesterday, building up the other positions around Rex and seeing what he can do with that in 2012. That would cause me to cancel my NFL Sunday Ticket and probably take a year off of football. I can't take another year with the HTM.

A) When did Kyle Shanahan say anything about Rex Grossman in 2012 and B)...there's still Ryan Tannehill

Perhaps I should have qualified that statement. I think that they would want to come here to play with Luck after he shows that he has the right stuff in his first year in the NFL and if the Skins pay them enough money.

That's the only way it could work because free agency comes before the draft.

Not stupid at all, I think he stays, he is having the presser at USC, why would he say he is leaving in front of the student body? Just to actually here the boo's, nah.

Hypothetically speaking, let's say Barkley, Griffin III, and Jones all decides to stay. I realize you still have other QBs like Tannehill and Weeden, but do you draft a QB this season just to be drafting one? Or, do you will and deal your draft picks this year in hopes of landing a high draft pick next year - where you could possibly be a shoe in for someone like Griffin or Barkley?

I think you intelligently (without too much reaching) draft a QB as high as you can this year. Then perhaps do so again next year depending on results.

I guess my only thoughts are, if that particular QB, say Tannehill, would normally be #22 in the first round WITH Barkley and RG III in the draft, would one still think it's wise to draft him at say #4 because he happened to move up be it that RG III and Barkley stayed in school?

But then again, I suppose it becomes the law of supply and demand. Less QBs in the draft makes the ones left in the draft more valuable. Just seems crazy to have to draft a QB higher than you might have because the other guys didn't declare.

I think this is a rare case where supply and demand may increase or deflate at the same rate. I think a RGIII, Barkley, Luck type may get teams fired up to draft a QB but if they are not there they will probably look to fill another need vs. drafting a Tannehill type earlier then expected.

We need Barkley and RG3 to come out. And even then chances are we're going to have to trade up to get the guy we want. Then again I can't help but wonder if Shanahan sees someone like Nick Folles as the Ryan Kerrigan of QB's and instead of trading up he trades back to not only get his QB but extra picks.
