RG3 = Aaron Brooks 2.0?

Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)
I'm just amazed how people are reacting to a kid showing up and doing one interview and running a 40. To me his interview was no better or worse then the rest other then the over confident RB, but he's another story. Yes his 40 time was a bit shocking to be but that's straight on speed. If this were the Olympics yes I'd be all over taking him but it's not. To be honest the 40 time means diddly other then if given a straight open field he will out run almost everyone, but that's rare considering the 11 other players on the other side of the ball.
None of what he's done at the Combine shows if he can read defenses, none of it showed how good or bad he can throw, none of it showed his footwork, none of it showed if he can back peddle set and deliver the ball. All it showed is he can answer a few questions which I think half of us could do and it showed he's an awesome track star. If he fell to us at #6 I'd take him but he won't, and the price rumored is way too high for me. Hell save the picks, trade back, and pick up two Rookies if you'd like and let them battle in camp. We'd still be able to pick up more weapons from the draft. Given all our holes everyone is talking about and how the team is "no where near competing for a play off spot" one would think others here would not want to give up all those potential picks that would probably be starting like pretty much everyone of last years had started at one point or another. One year of hardly any FA movement and one solid draft seems and doing the opposite of what this team has done in years past and it's like everyone has gotten DT's from it and are screaming for a fix at any cost. Plus we all can speculate but we really don't know what Flynn will want, he might decide to sign a decent contract with the Packers in order to stay with them because they offer the best chance of getting a second ring atleast for now. That would screw all this up. Manning might decide he will not want to hurt the Colts fans feelings and lose his legacy by playing elsewhere and that would put a monkey wrench in everything also. Cause the rest of the QBs out there don't scream play offs, more like backup other then possibly Hoyer and he is a back up. |
Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)
There is game tape that tells you RGIII is a legitimate QB and not simply a track star. Why do people keep discounting what he did at Baylor last year like anyone could have done the same? And just a heads up but it wasn't one interview. He had multiple interviews (ie the NFL Network) and the general consensus is that he handled the questions better than the rest of the QB group. This includes actual football talk and not just "how would you describe yourself" questions.
The 40 is a small part of a big picture. We're also seeing him backing up his listed height and weight as well as impress teams and media pundits alike who are getting a chance to meet him for the first time. Also keep in mind that a lot of teams that have been suspected to be involved in a trade up are meeting face to face for the first time in a while. Either way this is not happening overnight. He's been projected to go #2 since maybe as far back as the start of the playoffs. It's not like he was suppose to be a late 1st early 2nd round pick and now teams are suddenly rushing to see how much the Rams want for the second pick. |

I guess I was mistaken cause I thought he had several with teams privately which none of us would know about other then what the teams said to us, which do you really think they would come out and say bad things about him?, and one interview by the NFL Network so the public could see. < and I didn't come away from that thinking OMG he did 100x better then everyone else we gotta get him. Why do people keep talking about him being a track star? Cause I thought they said he played track also. I'm not discounting what he did in a spread offense but answer me why everyone over looks his flaws like he has none? |
Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)
Also what constitutes a "Franchise" QB? I'm almost positive everyone here has a different idea of what one is. I hesitate to call anyone a franchise QB until they have been here longer then a couple of years, and they have to have pretty decent success. RGIII has neither of these as of yet and for me it's hard to call him anything other then a really good luxury draft pick which will cost the team several valuable draft picks that could be starters also. In yrs past when Cerrato would draft 7 people and only keep 2 or 3 I'd agree with you all but this coaching staff showed they can scout valuable starting talent and able to keep all.

Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)
I agree with SB on the point of taking RGIII if he's there at 6 (I also agree he wont be there); however there is no way I'd trade away a bunch of pick for him. This team has waaaay too many holes to be giving away draft picks.

Cause the rest of the QBs out there don't scream play offs, more like backup other then possibly Hoyer and he is a back up.
wow... gotta say, this ranks up there in the "I refuse to see it, because I don't want it" quotient. Does a combine interview alone make a franchise qb? no, but this kid has done dozens of interviews, has his degree, and clearly has a good head on his shoulders. ***edit*** I don't know for sure how many interviews, but I know he has done several with Sirius, and NFL Network. Yes sure all of these are fluff but listen to Carlos Rodgers do an interview, and listen to RGIII, and you most certainly come away with two distinctly different impressions. **** Does the fastest qb 40 since Michael Vick mean he will elude NFL pass rushers? no, but college film would seem to imply he might, and if he does get out in the open, the game break speed might come in handy. I think the DT's come from having qb controversy every year since 91, and never just "having that guy". With nearly 600 free agents, alot of our holes will get touched on that way. If there was ever a year to give up several picks in order to get a franchise qb, this just might be the one. We have the cap room to get solid, maybe ever star, players at a few positions, there will be several to choose from, and we have a lot more young depth than we have had in years. Now, we don't know what the price will be for RGIII, and if it's possible that it might be too high. 3 1st rounders is what I consider too high. The browns certainly could bid up to that if they want to, since they have 2 this year and one next ) |

I like him, but feel like Cam Newtons performance last year has skewed a lot of opinions on RGIII. Putting up big passing stats in a college spread Offense normally wouldn't mean much, and people are having a hard time setting his speed and mobility to the side. Give me the 40 times of Big Ben, Brees, Rodgers, Brady and both Mannings any day of the week. To me, the faster RGIII runs, the bigger the impact will be when a 250LB. Linebacker slams into him. That said, if the Shanny's are in love with him and think he's the chosen one, then this year's second and third and next year's first isn't a terrible price to pay ONLY because we can get the same caliber players in free agency. If we weren't in such a solid position with free agency, it would be a much tougher pill to swallow. |

I still believe it will break down this way....
Colts ....Luck #2 Browns....RGIII Peyton Manning to the Cardinals or Jets. |

Certainly possible. That was more so the case last year I think |
Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)
Shanny has been watching college QB tape since mid season. And just because the media was not spouting about him does not mean RG3 was not a prospect before this year.

I must say, while I think it is nice that RG3 ran such a good 40 time...in a way I don't know how that makes him more valuable. The guy is a QB...yes it is nice to have a fast QB and he'd become a double threat, but he is still a QB. Cam Newton ran a 4.6 40 and he is a double threat. In the end, I want RG3 to be a good passer and decision maker, which I am sure he can do. I just thing that people are too enamored with the 40 in this situation.
I'm with you on this. It kills me seeing some fans claim "LETS GET HIM" after seeing a fast 40 time. I'm like, are these the same guys calling Al Davis stupid? I could care less of a QB's 40 time. Like somebody mentioned, I'll take Brady, Mannings, Marino (and slew of others) 40 time over a fast QB without the passing skills. |

I tend to think that most who want RGIII wanted him before his 40 time. Al Davis would look at speed and set everything else aside. I don't think that's the case with RGIII. He would appear to have lots of tangible, and intangible, assets. |

The fact that their signals are "weird" tells me they're definitely interested and want everyone to think otherwise. They're just bad at bluffing. |

Actually people have talked about RGIII for some time. However, he was hurt during the '10 season, thus putting a damper on the conversation. To imply that he is no more than a one-hit wonder, as you have, is not fully true. Besides, how many good years did Cam Newton have at Auburn? |

It all depends on who you are talking about. Some people have been touting RGIII for some time. These folks are not wooed by his 40 time. Others may be getting on the RGIII bandwagon today. For those folks, you are correct. |

I wasn't alluding to him not having those skillsets mind you. I just thought it was funny that many said "go get him" after his 40 time. That's something you might would say for a RB/WR, but definitely not a QB. That's the last stat I'm concerned about. I agree completely about RGIII having a ton of tangible and intangible assets. He would no doubt be a #1 pick in most drafts. |

He ran a 4.4 40? Who cares how he throws? Let's go get him! /sarcasm. /drooling while thinking about an RG3 bootleg with Helu or Royster in the backfield. |
Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)
I took a look at Baylors schedule last year and I was not impressed, I am not going for the hype, I would like to see us keep our picks this year, maybe look for a Cousins/Weeden/Keenum later in the draft but do not trade down, and let the Manning drama play out.
Flame on. |

Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)
Why does not getting RGIII mean we will suck next year? We can only get better with some quality picks. But yeah you are right if we get RGIII we will be well on our way with our new franchise QB, as he gets broken and battered because we have no O-line. When are people gonna realize this simple point, you can put an average QB see "Mark Rypien" behind an awesome O-line and we succeed but put a "franchise qb"see "Heath Schuller behind a bad O-line and we get nothing and we still suck.

We need a real quarterback. Such as Rg3, Luck, Manning, Flynn, even Orton worst case. Getting those 2nd tier quarterback gives us a one in million chance of finding one. Mark Rypien played in a different legue. He also played on a team without a salary cap, where the Redskins were by far the highest paid team. He had one of the best offensive lines in history along with a great defense, good running backs and good recievers. Rypien was at best an average QB. |

and yes I say the same thing about Luck. What has he done in the NFL? What has he done in the NFL that he should be called a "franchise QB"? So the Colts pick him thinking and hoping he will be but what if he bombs? It happens more often then not. |
Re: Yet Another QB Rumors Thread (Volume 9)
No player taken in the draft comes with a guarantee. But you evaluate guys the best you can so you can make the best possible decision.
