Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
This is my take in the Cousins pick....
He was the original backup plan if we could not trade up to get RGIII and it was not expected for him to fall to the 4th round. BA says to Shanny.." Cousins is still on the board do you want to grab him!?" Shanny- " yes! I want to wipe the cupboard clear and start with fresh new minds, 2 intelligent QBs learning the system at the same time and it will just fuel RGIII to go 110%!" BA - " he can either be nice insurance in case RGIII goes down and he could very well turn into trade bait....let's get him!" Shanny- " cue the QB controversy card!" DS- " yeah, meanwhile we have a parade going for RGIII and 20,000 waiting for him at FedEx field.....please..... our 2 1st rounders say otherwise." BA- " 100 bucks say if the Pats made this move ESPN would be kissing their butt!" |
Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
I'm supprised at the media's negativity on the Skins picking up Cousins also. I look at it this way:
1- We have our franchise QB in RG3. Everyone wanted him. We got him. 2- There were some concerned about his size and the fact that his running might get him injured similar to Vick. Lets look at it this way, "IF" he were to get injured would you want to go back to Grossman and or Beck? I'm pretty sure we all had seen enough of both of them. So picking up another QB was going to happen. They didn't get P.Manning, and none of the other candidates were worth taking so drafting another QB was most likely going to happen. Would you want a decent back up or would you want the team to have taken a 7th round QB whome we all felt was simply camp fodder and god forbid he has to take over? 3- There were a lot of us to include myself who felt we should get rid of RG1 and Beck and pick up 2 QB's in the draft. Now we have two young QB's in the stable to play if need be. If one turns out not to work out we have the other, if both work out well then we have many options as in trading Cousins down the road or using the QB that fits best with what we want to do each week. We all know RG3 is the QB the coaches want to lead the team but technically he's not a "franchise" QB until he's proven himself and has been the leading QB for a few yrs. So should the team see something in an opponant that looks like Cousins might be the better fit the team can always have him play that week. Most likely Cousins won't see the field unless the team is up by a lot of points then they can sit RG3 and let Cousins get playing time for perhaps a trade down the road. |
Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
Those ripping the Skins for wanting to have good depth at QB probably also ripped the Colts and Bears last year for not having good depth at QB. This whole thing is absurd.

The media laughed at the Skins last year for having Grossman and Beck as the teams QB's. Now the team goes out and picks up one of the best out of this yrs draft and picks up another young talented QB that played in a pro style in college to be back up or as an insurance policy and the media acts confused and laughs at the Skins. WTF? Cousins was projected to go in the 2nd round. With all the talent in other positions he fell to the 4th round. That would be considered a steal for any other team.... except the Redskins. Why? Atleast we now have to talented QB's for the future and if nothing else hopefully one pans out well. Most expectedly RG3 but for what ever reason he doesn't there is Cousins. No complaints here. |
Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
So, in everyone's opinion, how does preseason work? Does Grossman see any snaps, or is it Griffin 2-3 quarters, Cousins the rest? Or does Grossman act as a buffer between the two?

#1 Rippers.... Chad and Lavar. I turned on the radio yesterday around 3:30 and they again were ripping the Skins for doing this, then had a guest on whom they tried to say was just as confused and had the same oppinion.... hello, they invited him on their show of course he will have the same oppinion. They made sure of that. Would it have been ok if we took Tannehill and in the 4th picked up Cousins? would the media have been more positive of that move? Our two guys will push each other. Cousins is a video hound so he will look at every aspect of what makes the other teams defense weak and hopefully that rubs off on RG3 if he doesn't already have that in him. |

Anybody tell you that drafted bad... If, If, if a draft analyst say I missed on a pick, and y'all hear it, then that's that.

It goes further than that ... If I can't draft a backup QB, I can't draft one. If my starter gets hurt, he's hurt. I mean ... simple as that. It aint about that... I mean its... Its not about that... Jonathan Crompton starts all 16 quarters or Grossman starts 1st game, gets in about two series Griffin starts 2nd game, gets in about a quarter and a half Griffin starts 3rd game, gets in 3 quarters Cousins starts 4th game, gets in the first half |

Who knows what the team will do but I'd imagine RG3 will get most of the snaps. Grossman and Cousins will split the remaining. Preseason games I'd imagine the first game each get a quarter and or a quarter and a half. The second game RG3 gets maybe a half to help learn the offense the other two get a quarter. The third game the same. The last game I'd imagine RG3 gets a quarter maybe quarter and a half then then Cousins probably would finish the game. They know what they got in RG1 and he knows the system already. So I'd imagine RG3 and Cousins would get most of the playing time so they can learn and the coaches can see what they can do. |

Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
Waste of a pick but the likely hood of your 4th round pick being a significant starter is low. But there isn't any question who the starter is in Shanahan's mind. he is tied to RG3 and not to Cousins. Cousins isn't going to push RG3. RG3 knows he has at least 3 years as a starter no matter who his back up is.

would you mind sharing what he said? (or is it what ncskins posted) 31 other teams had a chance to pick him anywhere between 2 and 4 times before we picked him up and they didnt. he's a bloody fourth round pick for goodness sake. Rex is a good mentor/#3 but hes a guy you NEVER want to see step onto the field. Backup QB was a HUGE need for this team. The 4th round is the PERFECT place to draft a BACKUP QUARTERBACK. The media keeps saying we had so many other needs and suggest we should have gone OL or DB with that pick. Thats the part of the media criticism that bothers me the most. There is not a single other player we could have picked up at that point that would project to be an immediate starter. ANYONE we could have picked would probalby not see the field as a starter until 2013 or 2014. I just want someone to ask the media critics this: Whats more important - A backup cornerback/linebacker/OL or a backup quarterback? Which would hurt the team more - Josh wilson going down and Kevin Barnes filling in or RGIII going down and Grossman filling in? What backup cornerback/linebacker/OL is better at their position than Cousins is at his? |
Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
According to Graziano, 14 teams started the same QB all season last year. That means there is a 67% chance our backup sees action over one year, and virtual certainty that our backup will start multiple games over the next 10-15 years. Add to that a QB that can run / take hits, and one that has already missed a year with an injury.. I think this was a great move.
In comparison, our 4th round picks for the past ~2 decades: [B]2011 - 4th - Roy Helu RB[/B] [B]2010 - 4th - Perry Riley LB[/B] 2008 - 4th - Justin Tryon CB 2005 - 4th - Manuel White FB [B]2001 - 4th - Sage Rosenfelds QB[/B] 2000 - 4th - Michael Moore G 1999 - 4th - Nate Stimson LB 1998 - 4th - Shawn Barber LB 1997 - 4th - Albert Connel WR For the past 15 years, 3 out of 8 fourth round picks ended up being... average. Riley and Helu could do more, but for now we should say they're passable / average. I'd say Cousins is a MUCH safer pick in a position of need. With near certainty of playing multiple games over the next decade, a good backup QB makes the difference between winning/losing, and competing when the unthinkable happens (think TJ Yates, Cassel @ NE, Flynn). And I agree completely that if New England, the Steelers or Ravens make this pick, everyone would be saying it was pure genius. But to be fair - we haven't done much over the past 20 years to deserve any credit -- yet. RG3 and Shanahan hopefully will change our reputation so our moves won't be questioned in the future.. |

Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
We lost so many games last season from injury..This kind of depth in the most important position is great. There will be no QB controversy until RG3 allows it. The media will if not already attempt to create one. Will be great for Rg3 with Rex mentoring. Beck....Thank god, will never step into an NFL stadium unless he buys a ticket. I think Rg3 will be the type to welcome the competiton.

i don't think there will be a competition. RG3 is the starter. Unless hes a complete bust, Cousins is a backup, and will remain a backup as long as he's on the team. The plan was probably to groom him and have two starting caliber QBs entering the 2014 season. Trade Cousins and to recoup one of the 1st rounders we gave up for Griffin. |

What's the chances that Cousins will be worth a 1st rounder by that time? Sure, if he gets a chance to play and do what Matt Flynn did for Green Bay last year. But Flynn wasn't worth a first round pick only because he played in only two game in which he did well. It's not like he'd been a starter or had consistent playing time. The only way we'll get a 1st or even a 2nd round pick for Kirk Cousins is if Robert Griffin III goes down with an injury and Cousins comes in and plays so well that he increases his trade value tremendously. |

Which NFL media 'experts' are on which side?

Re: Kirk Cousins pick 4.7
Good read
Three Thoughts: Kirk Cousins 1. You might have heard that not everyone liked the Redskins’ selection of quarterback Kirk Cousins in the fourth round. So I poked around this week with people who are, or were, involved in the drafting process — whether as scouts, GMs or coaches, one of whom is quite familiar with the Redskins’ process. Almost all did not want to be identified (can speak the truth). Of that group only one was adamant that the Redskins should not have drafted Cousins. Another said he understood why they selected him, but that he would not have because of the “potential distraction.” Here’s a sampling of what they said: “It was a good pickup for the future. … Groom him and trade him; that’s the West Coast guru trend. … Inside the organization they believe they have all their bases covered. Remember, this isn’t an organization that believes in developing other skill positions (except QB). He’s a system guy like Kyle [Shanahan] prefers. They think he’ll pick it up faster than Griffin.” Another: “I don’t know if he can ever be a starter without a strong supporting cast, a lot like [Matt] Flynn. … Right now, they can’t have enough [QBs].”Another: “A little surprised, but besides that, he’s a good pick in the fourth.” Another: “Barring injury, he really won’t play at all. And if RGIII is as good as they hope, he’ll never play for them. The only way it makes sense is if they feel he is good enough to serve as the backup by the start of the season. Then they could cut Rex [Grossman]. Even then, they had to have other good players at different positions on the board when they made this pick. Still, doesn’t make great sense.” Another: “I think Shanny drafted Cousins to develop him as future trade bait a la Kevin Kolb, who the Eagles fleeced Arizona for. … Cousins is about 10 times as smart as Kolb. The West Coast offensive terminology is unbelievable.” 2. Greg Gabriel, who now writes for the National Football Post, was willing to go on the record since his job now is to analyze. But he also spent 29 years in the NFL, including nine as Chicago’s director of college scouting. His take: “I don’t think he’s a starting NFL quarterback. He could be a real good backup, so if you’re drafting him to be that, then it’s fine. They might be thinking that they’ll go with Rex [Grossman] this year and Cousins after that. Then it’s a good pick; you’re not just drafting for this year, you’re drafting for the future of the franchise. Or they could be doing what a lot of teams have done: draft a QB and develop him and then if he shows well, trade him for more than you got him for. It’s not a waste. Obviously, we don’t know what their board looked like, but they had to have a fairly good grade on Cousins otherwise they wouldn’t have pulled the trigger. “I wouldn’t look at it as a distraction. You’re not drafting him to challenge Griffin. I’m sure the plan is either to trade or develop him to be a quality backup. Griffin is not a guy that will stand in the pocket; he’ll move around and he’ll take hits. He’s not a big-framed guy, so he could get hurt so you have to have a quality backup.” 3. Here’s something else to consider: The Redskins have drafted an NFL-high 21 players combined the past two years. This is not a perfect organization, and the Redskins have exhausted a lot of picks in trying to find a quarterback. One knock I’ve heard from several scouts is that their drafts are too coach-driven, which some feel leads to mistakes. But the point is they’ve heavily emphasized the draft the past two years. They had nine picks this last draft, adding two. Like this organization or not, they’ve maneuvered well in the first three drafts, adding picks each year. And when you do that, you can make a pick or two that you ordinarily would not have with fewer picks. If RGIII struggles, then, yes the backup QB becomes popular. But that will be true regardless if they had Cousins or not. Or have you forgotten this fan base? By the way, here’s the list of how many picks every team has made: Washington (21), Minnesota (20), Philadelphia (20), Seattle (19), Cleveland (19), St. Louis (18), Cincinnati (18), Buffalo (18), Green Bay (18), San Francisco (17), Kansas City (17), Denver (16), Miami (16), Baltimore (16), Pittsburgh (16), Houston (16), Tennessee (16), New England (16), Tampa Bay (15), Arizona (15), San Diego (15), Indianapolis (15), Dallas (15), N.Y. Giants (15), Carolina (15), Oakland (14), N.Y. Jets (14), Detroit (12), Atlanta (12), New Orleans (11), Chicago (11), Jacksonville (11). Q&A With: JUNE JONES Southern Methodist University coach June Jones coached in the NFL for 11 seasons, including three years as Atlanta’s head coach. He’s been the head coach at SMU since 2008, with three of his players drafted by the Redskins: receiver Aldrick Robinson, guard/center Josh LeRibeus and corner Richard Crawford. Q: What should Redskins fans look forward to with Josh LeRibeus? A: He’s a powerful, athletic kid. His balance and strength are rare for guys of that size. He played for me last year at 315, and he’s played as high as 355, 370. He’s extremely smart. He played guard for me, and he played center for me sometimes in practice. I’m not so sure that he eventually won’t be a center because of his intelligence and his athletic ability and strength. Q: Is he a good fit in the stretch zone? A: He’s a perfect player for what Mike [Shanahan] likes to do in the run game. He doesn’t even know his own strength, and his athleticism is perfect for what the Redskins do in the run game. Q: How much would you put him on the move? A: We do a lot of trapping and pulling so he has no problems doing that obviously. His real strength is the stretch plays and the zone plays where he has to combo up to backers, that kind of stuff. Q: Some say he was over-drafted. What do you think about the round he went in? A: I would say that my feeling, having been back in college for 15 years, just from the level of interest I thought he would go in the second round. That would have been my guess, based off the number of people who were calling and who was calling. Q: How did losing 70 pounds transform him as a player? A: Sitting out made him focus and realize what he had to do to get to the next level, and I told him if he was committed to reporting and staying in shape he would get drafted where he got drafted. He has been a new guy in the last 15 to 18 months since [being academically ineligible]. I told Mike that he should get film from two years ago because at 355, 370 he was still athletic and could still move. He could play at whatever weight they want him to play at. And his academic thing was not … he’s extremely intelligent. That was one of those things that, to be honest, was more of a screw-up on our part than it was his. Q: What do they have in Richard Crawford? A: I had two corners that made it to the NFL the last two years Bryan McCann (Oakland) and Sterling Moore (New England), and I thought Richard was maybe ahead of them. If you draft guys in the sixth, seventh round that can play that helps you immensely because of the salary cap. You have to have guys like Richard. He’s a punt returner, he can play man-to-man, and he can play in zone. He’s very smart, and his work ethic is as good as anyone I’ve been around. Q: Can he cover in the slot? A: He can do that. I think he ran a 4.42 in his workout day. He can run, he can play man, he can play bump and run. He’s a smart player in the zones with all the zone blitz schemes we ran. He’ll be really knowledgeable when he gets up there for the OTAs. Q: Aldrick Robinson was drafted last year and probably was hurt by the lockout — we never saw that explosive speed. What were you expecting from him? A: I would think this is a big year for him. When Mike [Shanahan] and I talked, what I told him is that Aldrick has world-class speed and it will start to show up with the more confidence he gets and the more he knows what he’s doing. This is the year that he has to really step up and do it. … I thought he would be better at the pro level, moving him around and putting him in the slot. We only played him outside. But I think he’s a really smart kid, and he has the speed you can’t coach. I would think this is the year he either takes it to the next level or they look for someone else.
