Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Going back the Chris Russell thing talking about Gano being openly religious played a part. Here is a twitter exchange that clarifies what he said.
T Mullick @TMM75 Listening to @ESPNRadio980's post game audio from Sunday and @Russellmania980 really said Gano's religious leanings are what got him cut? Chris Russell @Russellmania980 @TMM75 @ESPNRadio980 That's not true, but u can walk away thinking that if u choose to believe that. T Mullick @TMM75 @Russellmania980 @ESPNRadio980 Just trying to understand what you were trying to say. Chris Russell @Russellmania980 @TMM75 @ESPNRadio980 - I was asked if there were any other reason besides just performance. So I answered what I believe to be true. Also, another gem stat: Dan Steinberg @dcsportsbog If the Skins axe Cundiff by Sunday, they'll be on 19 kickers since 1994. NFL avg is about 8.5. No other team above 13. Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Looks like we have Josh Brown, Olinde Mare, and Kai Forbath are trying out today.
Some stats thrown out by CR this morning. Chris Russell @Russellmania980 PK Josh Brown is a career 80.9% in terms of FG accuracy, His % went from 84.6% to 75 % from '10 to '11, Fisher (STL) or Ryan (NYJ) said no. Chris Russell @Russellmania980 Olindo Mare is 39 (22-28) last year w/ CAR, 78.6% with 84 kickoffs, & 53 touchbacks (new rules). In '10, was (25-30, 83.3%) (72 KO, 20 TB) Chris Russell @Russellmania980 Per @NFL .com - PK Josh Brown had only 15 touchbacks on 54 KO's in '11, while playing in a dome at home (STL). In '10, 73 KO's & 5 touchback Chris Russell @Russellmania980 Kai Forbath was (1-1) at FedEx in the final PS game, good from 43, 2 KO with no touchbacks, overall (5-5) in pre, long of 55, 9 KO, 2TB.
And another kicker that couldn't beat out Gano lighting it up for texans

Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
What? take a look at his stats. dude also had a propensity to kick the ball out of bounds on kickoffs. Clearly if he was consistent he would be here.
We finally need to address this in the offseason.
I agree with BHA that he wasnt as incosistant as some people think he was, at least in 2011. He was 31 out of 41 with 5 being blocked. If all his blocks were made he would be 88%, although some of the kicks may have been missed and some of the blocks may very well be his fault. No excuse for kicks out of bounds though. I think why people liked him is that he is a young kicker with a very strong leg that was getting better. He also owns the Redskins record for longest field goal. I liked him because he broke his back and kept playing and made a FG. I thought that was pretty sweet. Maybe not Trent Williams bone bruise im proving myself and need to let everyone know tough, but still tough nonetheless..... |

I always thought Mare had a bit of a noodle leg. Not a lot of strength but accurate. I could be totally wrong... Considering he's been out of the NFL for.. Oh, I dunno... About 2 years? |
Dude can you lose that quote or put it under the quote line? It is annoying; it shows up on Taptalk too. I am tired of reading it; thinking it is part of your post.
I like it. Think about it. It is very true. :) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Forbath to me sounds worth a shot.

Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
I'm hoping we go with Brown or Forbath. I liked what people here were saying about him a few pages back. Go young!

I agree 100%. With Brown and Mare we know what we'd be getting. |

Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
I"m with the others, I'd rather see what Forbath brings to the table. We are in the same situation with Brown that we were with Cundiff. Hoping he rebounds from a bad year.

Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
forbath needs to show he can get the touchbacks. in his very small sample; he's about 22% (2/9 - doubt he attempted any onside kicks in preseason). no stiff competition from josh brown there...
since the rule change, brown is still only 28% (15/54 - not accounting for onside kicks) olindo mare: 62% (53/84 - not accounting for onside kicks) compare to cundiff: 59% (62/105 - not accounting for onside kicks) |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
While I wont miss the shoddy FGAs I certainly will miss being able to go get a drink on our kickoffs since Billy just crushed them consistently for no return. Our field position game may take a hit.

Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
just looking at these numbers, who would you choose?
*edit, added a 6th kicker |

kicker key below in white text:
gano 1 mare 2 cundiff 3 brown 4 forbath 5 rackers 6 |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
We leave 15 or so points in several total games this year and we are worried about 5 yards on a kickoff. I would rather have a guy that i can actaully drink my beer during the game with the worry hes going to shank the xtra point
|
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
Rackers or Forbath so... 5 and 6
Pretty neat trick there Los. Would prefer youth. |
Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
I'm kinda surprised Rackers isn't getting a look today, but I guess they already determined he's not their guy from training camp.

i just want the guy whose not gonna cause me to throw my remote
Well thats not what Chris Said on ESPN980.
Check the ESPN980 Audio Vault - 10/7/2012 Chris Russell Post Game and start listening around the 6 minute mark. Al Michaels: Would Shanahan bring him (Cundiff) back? Do you think he'd swallow his pride and.. Russell: No, i dont think he will, because i dont think Mike likes him very much Al : Do you know why that is? What is it that he specifically doesnt like about him? Chris: i know some things. Hes frustrated with his consistency... and then there's other elements to it that i'm not quite sure if that, you know, necessarily belongs in this forum, but you know - Graham is a very religious person and i've heard some things that that irked some people. So you know, there's something to that i beleive. I don't know that absolutely 100% for sure, and i dont want to accuse somebody of something, but that is what i was told.
Maybe I am wrong, but the quote you put here in no way equals your earlier statement
Chris Russell and rich tandler have both been on espn980 and essentially said shanahan got rid of gano because he was openly religious and it put a lot of players off.
The actual airtime quote as you have it, says that Gano's inaccuracy was a primary source of their frustration and other factors may have made the decision more palatable. Your interpreted quote makes it sound like the openly religious issue was essentially why Shanahan got rid of Gano. I don't see how the airtime quote you used in anyway equates to the statement you attributed to it. |

Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
the arguement that Shanny would get rid of a guy because he is religious the utterly idiotic. If he would do his job and make kicks, he'd still be here.

Re: Should Billy Cundiff still be cut!
I don't know about salary cap, but could we keep cundiff as a kickoff specialist, get the young guy in for FG's, and cut someone else? Not sure if it works, but seems like some other teams have done that.

so basically, if there's room in the cap, who would you cut? |

I think the Falcons did that either last year or the year before that. |

I don't see how the airtime quote you used in anyway equates to the statement you attributed to it.
Did you listen to it? If not, i suggest you listen to it, listen to voice inflections and tell me what you think. In this interview, he mentions accuracy as it relates to directional kickoffs. In earlier interviews in the past few weeks on Skins at 1, he's repeatedly insinuated this is stupid because skins arent doing directional kickoffs this year. They just want to kick it out of the end zone so it cant be returned. In other intervews, Russell has stated the Skins told Gano they didnt blame him for any of the blocked kicks last year. He was 15 of his last 16. He's conistent. I listen to redskins radio every day and Russells been expressing confusion regarding the skins decision to go with Cundiff over Gano since the move happens. Chris says he talks to Gano every day and openly admits he is baised in his favor. For weeks, Russell has indicated the reason the Skins cut Gano were largely personal and that Shanahan doesnt like him at all. However, he never elaborated until Sunday, which is why i mentioned it here. |

As later tweets said, and per SS directly asking, CR has said that was not his intent. |
