U need the talent at the end of they day and we don't have it on defense yet.

Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News
Russell was just on the Drive on ESPN 980.
He said that a very important voice in the organization explained they felt Fangio's success was in large part due to the outstanding talent he had and that they felt Barry got more with less. Does anyone know: 1. Who the "voice" is and 2. If this led to Barry being hired or if this is spin after Fangio turned us down? |
Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News
I'd guess the voice is McCloughan. There's no way they didn't consult with him on this hire.

Yeah it probably was going to be bad even if Vic Fangio had come here. |

Look at Fangio's D rankings prior to SF.

Hmmm. W/out elite talent, he is pretty average. Shock.

Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News
It's important to note that he was the first defensive coordinator for two expansion teams in Houston and Carolina.
Regardless, Phillips was clearly the best choice, even over Fangio. Spare me the "he's too old" or "too soft" baloney. Players clearly respond to him, and his defenses don't appear to have been much less successful the older he's gotten. I'd feel better about our current front office if I knew SmootSmack's suspicion that Phillips wasn't as interested in coming here as has been reported was true, because passing over one of the most successful defensive coaches in the history of the league for a guy that orchestrated back-to-back defenses ranked league-worst in both yards and points is mind-boggling. Yeah, he may not have had much talent in Detroit, but if he's really a better option than Wade or Fangio you'd think he'd at least finish, I dunno, in the top 25 in either category just once? Maybe? For a start? But hey, we got a young guy with "energy" that "wants to prove himself" and has "grown" since his epic failure in Detroit. Yay! And anyway, who am I to think I know better than our front office? Because clearly, they've done an excellent job in their hires up to this point. Let's all pretend like we don't know how this ends. That felt great. :D |
Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News
I wouldn't say the talent level with the bears is that much better - if at all. I wonder of it was for more job security than anything else.
|
Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News
At the end of the day if Joe Barry can motivate these players, utilize the talents that each player has, put them in the right position to excel and hold them accountable then I am cool with the hire. They tried for Vic and lost.

In the immortal words of one Aaron Rodgers, everyone justs needs to RELAX.
I can buy being uninspired. I can buy being skeptical. I can buy being dissapointed we didn't snag someone more proven. But for f*cks sake the weirdly large contingent of people literally freaking the f*ck out need to get a drink or something. How about we give the guy a chance? Worst case scenario is he's awful and we suck...in which case 2016 is a total house cleaning. It's 50-50 either way on that anyways. We could have a tag team of belichek and parcells running our D and the talent alone would sink below average. Nothing is magically changing next year anyways because of that. |
Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News
Any info on his scheme? Is it too early for him to have a scheme?
More Pittsburg with big guys occupying lineman or more Wade Phillips with the d line actively rushing? |

Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News
I don't think anyone is freaking out at all...but some of us are frustrated and pissed at the choice for obvious reasons. Sure he could be great...but it seems unlikely. Just sick of sucking year after year...and after the last 2 hires I was hopeful the front office turned a major corner...and now back to the same old crap again...so you either get pissed or depressed or you go back into denial mode and enable the same crap. Quite frankly I feel like I am in some sort of dysfunctional relationship. Perhaps the skins mean too much to me...it just ain't healthy. I am sure I am not alone. It seems like Groundhog Day with a bad ending

Lions 2008 defensive roster can be found at the link. Aside from the immortal Chartric Darby, Barry didn't have much to work with.

Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News
I'm really trying to reserve judgement, but this seems like more of the old. Barry's resume fails to impress. A lifetime position coach who failed miserably when he was last in this role. He doesn't seem like he's going to help us within 1-2 years -- and that's all Jay probably has. If Jay leaves then Barry's done too.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Just like the storylines of the years past: 1) "Haslett will be much better because Shanny was no longer handcuffing him." 2) "Bringing back the same secondary with Ryan Clark will somehow be better." 3) "Hatcher still has plenty of gas in the tank at age 30+" 4) "Orakpo would be unleashed this year -- and deserved a franchise tag." 5) "Rambo is playing so much better" I've heard these crazy stories in the past. I'm now just waiting for McC's drafts to make us better each year for the next 3-4 years, and will be along for the ride. |
Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News
For me this has been a great offseason so far, the GM I wanted was hired, the best OL coach available fell on our laps and Foerster was replaced. I like the fact that Joe Barry is pretty much an unknown with much to prove after his Detroit experience (so glad Haslett is long gone) I believe he will be highly motivated, energetic and make players accountable. This is what I wanted and you won't hear me bitching for quite awhile :)

Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News
Dammit! Is it too much to ask for the Redskins to hire a defensive coordinator that ran a GOOD defense before? First Haslett of ever diminishing returns on the Ds he ran. Now we bring in Mr.0-16.
Swell. |
Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News
One thing I liked about Gruden's comments, he stated a large part of their discussion was how Barry was going to develop young players.....
hope it works out. |
Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News
well, i'm not jumping for joy. i guess we'll see, but i was really hoping they could get someone better in here. odds are this is nothing better than a lateral move.

Swell.[/quote] The Detroit deal was 8 years ago, AND he was running the Tampa 2 system under Marinelli who was Kiffin's right hand man in developing it. For the last four years he has been coaching in a 3-4 and gotten good reviews as position coach. Not giving the guy a pass, but willing to give him a chance. If he pulls a Detroit, then he AND Gruden are gone next year. |

Barry has been a defensive coordinator, and he was very much proven: he was proven to suck. If a defense is historically bad (as that Detroit defense was), you need a special combination of bad players and bad coaches. Just having one of the two might give you a bad defense, but not a HISTORICALLY bad defense. |

I agree with this although I would change "Too many of us expect" to "Most of us rationally expect". The problem though is that indeed too many people get simply overwhelmed with indigence/anger/disappointment/whatever because they base their entire reaction on the well-earned expectation of SUCK. The reality is that the Org has earned this but by sucking for a long time. And the team will suck until...well...it doesn't. Some day they're not going to suck. They're going to start getting it right Maybe it won't be soon or maybe it's today but someday they'll figure this out. At that point not many (no one?) will recognize it though because they, instead of extending the Org yet another undeserved chance, will decry it as stupid and awful. And then they'll be proven wrong. So I choose to simply chill. Maybe he'll be great or maybe he won't. Maybe he'll be great but won 't have enough talent to succeed, Maybe he'll be awful but have so much talent he can't fail. Who the f knows? I do know that freaking out about it like so many people are doing is useless and super tiresome. |
