Re: Nfl draft round 2 and 3 thread.

Matt Jones

STRENGTHS Imposing size with muscular frame. Above-average swivel in hips and perimeter quickness for runner his size. Pistons for feet, chomping and churning through contact to extend run. Has slippery lower body with angle-tackle attempts sliding off. Keeps shoulders square to line for maximum power. Plays with forward lean and is difficult to stop for a loss. Used sparingly as a pass-catcher, but flashes capable hands if asked to do so in the pros. Aggressive in protection, squaring up and striking a blow against free-running blitzer.

WEAKNESSES More grinder than every-down running back. Will hit it downhill, but has very little feel for maximizing run creases. Blind to open running lanes. Drops head and burrows into blockers and defenders rather than seeing open space. Must improve patience in setting up blocks. Can juke and shift when headed to line of scrimmage, but doesn't show much creativity and shiftiness once he's on second level. Needs to keep ball tucked and secured to avoid fumbling issues.
for what its worth..these guys had him as a 5/6th rounder...would have preferred top oline , but...whatever
Matt Jones Draft Profile – NFL.com
From that article:
Bottom Line
Has very good athleticism for a big running back and is a physical pile-mover who is difficult to stop for negative yardage. Unfortunately, Jones lacks the instincts and vision to fully maximize his physical tools. Jones could become the physical member of a running-back-by-committee approach, with upside as a third-down option.
With good pass pro sounds like a solid 3rd down/short yardage bruiser

Does anyone think that Jones is a future replacement for DY at FB in the next couple years?

Re: Nfl draft round 2 and 3 thread.

Hmm..I do trust Scott...but he has the old Redskins scouts...I don't get it on this one. Hard to see a really tall RB that is in the mold of Morris/FB where that is covered...our need was a 3rd down threat with breakaway speed/change of pace...not a 4th and 1 specialist...since we already have a solid FB

Re: Nfl draft round 2 and 3 thread.

Good ST player, picks up block well, and can punch it in from short yardage. Three things this team needs sorely. How many times did helu whiff on a block and cost us? I know we arent used to drafting smart but this isnt Vinny or Shenanigan making these picks its a guy who has a proven track record. Let the process unfold. Its gonna be a bright sun shiny day.

We desperately need a backup RB that can block on 3rd downs. We still have, what? 7 picks left?

I'm not gonna sweat a RB pickup.

I guess he can play 3rd and 1 or 3rd and 15.

Re: Nfl draft round 2 and 3 thread.

I hear that Jones visited the Redskins, so I'm sure McC got to take a good look at him. My only concern are his health history (knee). Other than that, I'm okay with this pick, we haven't had a good pass blocking RB since CP.

CRedskinsRule 05-01-2015 11:22 PM

Re: Nfl draft round 2 and 3 thread.

Yeah I think 3rd down pass pro and big guy are the two keys to that pick. If we can make sure the qb(whoever it is) stays clean our receivers have pretty good odds of getting open. I am liking the draft from the concept of what's being built.

no, watch his video he has decent speed and moves- doesn't look like he is 230 lbs

Exactly. This seems like someone you draft in the 6th round as a project.

Re: Nfl draft round 2 and 3 thread.

Good frame and speed for special teams. Seems to fit the bruising mold of Gore and Lynch, minus some vision. It's another attitude pick, hard nosed.

That said I don't know that they couldn't have gotten him tomorrow.

Love the Preston Smith pick and Jones can get us first downs and he can block. We're getting big and we're getting physical.

Gruden on RB Matt Jones: "He's a downhill-type runner." Said of visit: "We liked his attitude, passion for football."

Gruden on @PrestonSmith91: "great versatility ... lined up all over the defensive front." Calls him an "explosive player" at OLB position.

If they liked Jones enough to draft him this high, they're probably looking at him as competition for Morris.

Jay Gruden said Alfred Morris won't be affected by pick of rb Matt jones. Morris still the guy. #WASpick

Also, can't wait to see Brandon Scherff manhandle Randy Gregory when we play the Cowpukes.

Dude can move well and has good game speed. Would of rather picked up Dawson that went a couple picks later. This might be Alfo's replacement after his rook contract expires.

Folks get use to running the ball a ton this year, hence the Scherff pick and now this physical rb. This is a solid pick, maybe a round early but I think he will fit well with what McC wants...

I sort of get the feeling that Gruden isn't in love with Morris.

Re: Nfl draft round 2 and 3 thread.

It might not be end of Alfred, however, the Matt Jones pick shows a change in the run game. Plus, Alfred will be looking to get paid after this year. Not sure if Jones is better than the other backs left on the board. Time will tell.

Re: Nfl draft round 2 and 3 thread.

We couldn't punch the ball into the end zone on 3rd downs for a while. The skins will walk into the end zone with Jones and Sherff, that's a big mofo .

Re: Nfl draft round 2 and 3 thread.

I like the way Jones plays like his hair is on fire. He goes all out all the time. He really finishes his runs. I also like that he is noted for his pass protection and ST play.

It seems to me that he was drafted too high but I really won't care about that if in the end this draft class makes us a better football team.

I now see the trend. Look for SM to draft big people who play hard during the rest of the draft.

That Guy 05-02-2015 12:38 AM

Re: Nfl draft round 2 and 3 thread.

remember CP pass protecting and laying out guys with 60lbs on him?

compare that to last year where like half our sacks came on RB and TE whiffing on the most basic of blocks. we sucked hard here. this is a helu replacement.

that said, you can get pass pro blocks later, this feels too early, but it does fill an obvious need.

blocking TE/FS/OG left on the needs list.

Completely off topic, but I'm at a strip club newly single being stupid, but they have a USA vs Norway hockey game on tv. And it's all players that have no legs. They have more guts in their pinky finger than I have in my whole body.

My Uber driver also was in the Navy for 10 years. Freaking awesome.

God bless America and God bless Norway.

Now on topic, completely on board with our first 2 picks. Absolutely love the trade. Don't get Matt Jones in the 3rd round. But I 100% support Scott, so hail to Matt Jones. Welcome to the Skins. Make me look dumb (again). HTTR.

Probably the 2nd time in my life that I was old enough to remember that I like where we're at. 1st was RG3s first year, pre injury.

2015 = In Scott and RG3 I trust.

Go Skins go.
