Giantone, "what if it is true"...is that what your asking? If so, the idea of journalism, fake news, ethics,..these institutions and ideas and topics...your totally confused. Step back and look at the big picture

Do you think buzzfeed and CNN would have run the exact same story was given to them and Obama replaced trump's name?

Now ask yourself is that right? This has turned into an everyday occurrence in the national media...and I don't think folks realize that half the reason trump won is this type of unsourced attacks and editorial opinion passed as fact has energized the country to say enough is enough.

No ,not what I asked,no need to spin and give a what if with Obama becuase Obama didn't throw doubt on all our security agencies.

From my perspective, it needs to be an independent investigation, a la the one opened up now on James Comey. I think, though many here will obviously disagree, that the intelligence agencies have become politicized (and when Trump assigns his staffs they will stay politicized, though likely in the opposite direction).

With dissolving policy now when Cuban flee actually political oppression this clears the way for them to be deported back to Cuba.

Interesting to see what folks support.

I guess when it comes to immigration policy, my first question is should people follow our immigration policy to enter the country or do you support illegal immigration where people just cross into the country illegally as human traffickers, or with drugs, or with guns or as terrorist?

that's always my first question and I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the responses.

It's not hard to have Mexico pay a bill for it. If you understand toll roads, then you understand how to build something, and recoup the costs. Add a wall surcharge to every wire transfer to Mexico, an additional fee at each entry point, etc. Mexico currently has a huge trade surplus with us, there are simply ways recoup the costs of building a wall.

As for it being the most ridiculous idea ever, there are examples throughout the world of walls used in the manor described. It's not a horrid idea, and it's not a fantastic amazing solution. It's something Trump throughout that resonated with his supporters, and got his opponents panties all in a bunch. Once he saw that, it was a given he was going to make it happen. If the Democrats had responded more openly to some form of border control, then he likely would have dropped it. At this point it's going to happen, and if people want to traffic in illegal stuff (which they will) they will have to get more creative than timing border patrol shifts (which they will).

I support a very loose immigration policy, more in line with the Statue of Liberty's ideal, but the idea would be that we establish an enforceable policy and then enforce it.

Without a lot of specifics, ideally imo our immigration policy would be something like: if you can show a willingness to work, that you abide by the laws of your current nation, and have some verifiable plan to establish residency (ie live with relatives, or enough savings to support 1year of residency, etc); then you should be able to come in on a temporary visa, with an eye towards citizenship.

You're right, a wall is ridiculous ... A fence is much more practical.
And for Obama, who voted for the border-fence bill back in 2006, the barrier may be best described as a big potential headache. Opponents are already appealing to him to halt construction and re-evaluate the project. But so far, the new Administration has given no indication that it is seriously considering doing so. While it has said it will make comprehensive immigration reform a priority, a spokesperson told TIME that Obama supports the fence "as long as it is one part of a larger strategy on border security that includes more boots on the ground and increased use of technology."
Oh .... and just so you don't think Mr. Obama was the lone Democrat on this:
Taking her hardest line yet against illegal immigrants, Sen. Hillary Clinton told the Daily News she wants U.S. borders secured with a wall or fence, possibly surveillance drones and infrared cameras.

Clinton's proposal - which came just weeks after she blasted Republican crackdowns on illegal immigrants as un-Christian - raised the ire of activists.

But she tempered her remarks by saying that, while she supports a barrier to stem new illegal immigrants, she favors a legalization process for the 11 million undocumented aliens already here.
To me wet foot dry foot was one of the most hypocritical if not racist bits of legislation we have had in recent times. We will accept Cuban asylum seekers that touch soil but not Haitian asylum seekers never mind their government is just as violent and oppressive. They should've called it "white foot, brown foot" that would be far more appropriate.

Those ideas are terrible, they came from Dems so they are quite useless! Trump's wall is gold plated and comes with imported marble from the Franciscan Church and Monastery. All he needs is a small loan of 50 billion dollars from the American people, but wait he's totally gonna pay it back and then some!

One of the most amazing things to me, is how often I think "that's exactly how I feel" when you or Matty are putting your thoughts down - of course with the names/parties changed. For example, I feel exactly the same way about Pres. Obama, he most definitely says BS and then his supporters build truth around it (albeit often with the help of a biased press corps). He, and the dems, had their time, now hopefully DT can come in and get the country back on track.

great take here. Buzzfeed has been educating folks about fake news...of course this became an issue "only" after Hillary loss because we need to blame someone other than the candidate.

So Buzzfeed is upset with false, fake news, but then they turn around an publish fake news. Folks you cant make up this hypocrisy.

"Somebody has been shopping the document around for a while, but reputable news organizations did not report on it because, as New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet explained, its contents are "totally unsubstantiated.""
Looks like this "fake news" wasn't fake at all. The document came from one of the world's most renowned Russian spies in the intelligence field, and currently owns one of the most respected intelligence agencies in the world. His work also helped expose FIFA, which led to the FBI arrests.

Christopher Steele, Trump Dossier Author, Is a Real-Life James Bond - NBC News

Nobody was "shopping" the document around. It had been passed around months prior, but nobody would run it since it was unverified. The part that bothers me the most is, the FBI had this document(via John McCain) well before the election and chose to go after Hillary and her emails when we might possibly have a Russian patsy in office? If Hillary had won the election and this shit had come out, I would guarantee you she would be investigated repeatedly the next 8 years, and possibly put up on impeachment articles for being a Russian spy.

There is some straight up legitimacy on this document. This kind of shit doesn't go into President and security council briefings for nothing.

I generally do not like politicians at all. I think Presidents are the most powerful puppets in the World. Puppets none the less.
Anyway Obama and his family had class. I appreciate them. I respect them as people. That is worth something to me.
I simply cannot respect Trump. Someone mentioned something today that I really have been thinking about. She said "I don't trust someone who cannot laugh". She was talking about Trump and it dawned on me that I have never seen the man laugh. Not even a little giggle? Wtf is that? Gotta be something wrong with his head man. The only time he laughed was when he got roasted by Hillary, and it was so forced and fake because he was on TV and he knew he had too.
Even when the guy smiles it is just a fake afterthought.
I know i know "who cares if he laughs he is gonna make America great again".
It sounds like a little silly thing, but the more I think about it the more disturbing it becomes.

Definitely not the first. Bush Cheney epitomized alot of whatis stereotypically bad about conservatism. They made laws designed for the richest of the rich. Used their position to waste away a healthy budget in favor of a few. But pres Obama disregarded whole segments of the US, generally showed disdain for anything outside of his liberal social view and mostly smugly berated anyone who disagreed with his core beliefs.
So for 16 years about there has been a vast section of the US who first was betrayed by the republican core then derided by the democratic core. And you wonder why they don't believe word one out of either sides mouth. That's why Trump's calling out the republicans who wanted to gut the -ethics office.was just as cheered as when he calls out people from the liberal side of the equation.

He may very well turn out like you predict. I give him a 65/35 chance of actually affecting effective chance vs being a true charlatan and puppet. Not great odds but definitely better IMO than of a 100% chance of deepening the toxic swamp that is dc politics if we had continued either the bush wing or Clinton wing of us politics.

Most on here can disagree even vehemently over what the right course for the US going forward should be, I just think we all ought to agree that politics as divided as ours is can't be sustained for a long time and we all need to find the common ground which everyone can build up from. And the past 16 years ain't it.

Most on here can disagree even vehemently over what the right course for the US going forward should be, I just think we all ought to agree that politics as divided as ours is can't be sustained for a long time and we all need to find the common ground which everyone can build up from. And the past 16 years ain't it.

I do not see smugness from Obama but I agree with most of this.
Fair enough. I took your last statement more as "obama screwed up a good thing" than "obama had his chance to fix things".
My bad.
Edit: I think you are underestimating the toxicity and bullshit deals that started in 1980 with ole Ron, and Ill throw Clinton in that shit box too. Just so you know I dont give dems a pass.
If I had to pin it down I honestly think the toxicity started in Reagan's second term when he had started going a little senile. The clinton democrats and the bush conservatives saw it and both worked behind the scenes to gather their power bases.
I do not see smugness from Obama but I agree with most of this.
I don't know how to phrase this, but in my opinion that "smugness" debate is all about what side of the aisle you're on. I never noticed that smugness either but then again I don't hate Obama. My coworkers have all pointed that out too, they think he has an attitude problem.

The problem I have with Trump supporters, based on my 3 immediate coworkers who are all die-hard supporters, is that they will defend him to the death on every point. Whereas they pounce on the Dems for every single slight, perceived or not.

Pussy grabbing:
Well, ya know, he said that 10 years ago. At some point you need to move on.

Defending himself on Twitter from everyday people that every President has had to put up with:
Well, ya know, you and the rest of the libs are just mad that he's willing to stand up for himself, because you're not used to that.

Building the wall:
Well, ya know, we gotta keep those freeloaders out. Of course there's ways to make Mexico pay for it. (Is there ways to make Mexico pay for it that don't make them a hostile threat to the immediate south?)

Shutting down the press room in the White House:
Well, ya know, he's just trying to fight the biased media that twists every word that comes out of his mouth (never mind the whole transparency argument)

My point is, when Obama is at fault, I don't sit here and act like everything he does is in my best interest, because it's not. I disagreed with him on the TPP bill, I semi-disagree with him on commuting Chelsea Manning's sentence, and I disagree with the extra powers he just gave to the intelligence agencies the week before he leaves office. But I ain't lying when I say my coworkers, and most of my friends on social media, have yet to disagree with a single policy, a single action, or a single anything he's done so far. All I get is "he won, you lost, get over it. We had to put up with Obama for 8 years, now it's our turn." It's like a war, and they are just mindless soldiers following company orders. Every single thing that comes out of the Dems is bad, and they need to be stopped. It's this hive-mind bs that is the real issue.

Speaking of real issues, about the only problem I have with Trump's stated plan so far is that he seems to have doubled down on deregulating everything environment related. It's pathetic that 90% of scientists are in agreement, and countries around the world are also in agreement, and yet there are still people that believe they should fight it to the death. They will be the death of us all.

4 years from now if Trump has made the EPA useless and deregulated everything in the name of corporate profit, he will essentially be flooring the gas on the car that is speeding to the destruction of our planet. Do baby boomers not give a shit about the planet because they'll be dead in 50 years, before climate change ever gets serious? I don't get it. If you think those billions of cars/trucks/trains/planes/ships/factories dating back to the industrial revolution aren't harming the environment, go stick your mouth on a tailpipe and tell me if you can safely breathe the air coming out of it. Keep in mind that's the filtered air too, it's most likely going through 2 catalytic converters to be cleaned up before it comes out the back.

Nothing has been as toxic as the Republican party the past 8 years. This shit was at an all time high. Just listen to this shit.

The problem is the media get their income from ratings and toxic news programming gets lots of ratings. That's why shitbags like Beck, Rush, Olbermann and others get off on fueling the fire. It's money in their pockets.

You can add Huffingpost, MSNBC (Rachel Maddow for example), and other liberal outputs to that list.

Sorry, The toxic media and political spin was just as bad this whole century, the only reason it seems worse is because it's one big effed up cesspool that is growing out of control.

It's useless man, bailout. I had to quite reading. It doesn't matter, message was sent by the people of the country...the presidency, congress, senate, and governorships. Boom.

Backlash against the media and direction of country. They can rationalize it anyway they want...russia, Isis, terrorists, hacking our government, a culture of blame everyone for your problems except yourself, the biggest fucking national debt/budget hole of all time.......these problems flourish under the Obama administration, these aren't new issues, just the media looked the other way and wouldn't report on it. Welp, American people took notice

Re: Recount Opinions

I will say again. No candidate - not Trump, not Clinton - won a simple majority.of the popular vote. Trump did win a super majority of counties and a majority of congressional districts. Clinton won 2 whacko states with large populations and all the urban cities like Chicago Baltimore and DC where citizens are comfortable electing criminals (Barry and Sheila for example).

Take it for what it's worth, around the country people not living in hyper condense areas of population are far more likely to vote against the democrats while high population areas are far more likely to vote for them.

Personally, I don't think it's an education thing as some like to say, as much as life conditions. The more sparsely populated an area, the more likely people tend to look to themselves first for answers and don't want outside interference, the more densely populated the more likely you are to look at an outside force (the politicals) to maintain a balance among clashes of people.
