Alex Smith led the league in downfield passing this year. |
It says 71 mil guaranteed but does that mean fully? We won't know until March 14th. It will be less cap space than what we would have had to sign KC for however.
Just reading this now. I think you're thinking in terms of a signing bonus. Guaranteed money doesn't have to be up front. It can be stretched out or back loaded. If Smith is getting $23.5M each season, all guaranteed, then that's only $23.5M where as Cousins would have wanted at least $30M OR the tag at $34M. |
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
So what? We didn't get appreciably worse, either. Kirk was leaving. We needed a QB. Colt was/is not the answer. We had competition for Smith, so we had to pay more. End of story.
So are you telling me that Colt can't do the same things that Smith can do? I just have a hard time believing that. Plus on top of that you extend a 34 year old several millions of dollars and you give up Fuller and a 3rd rounder??? I'm sorry but I can wrap my fucking head around that. I just can't. The Redskins just can't get it right. They fucked up w/ McNabb, RG3, Cousins, the salary cap, Scot and now this. It's a combination of fuck ups that I just can't take anymore. Bruce Allen has naked pics of Snyder w/ a cheerleader. |

COLT MCCOY isn't on the same planet as Alex Smith, u guys are going way too crazy with all of this. Lets not forget that the man was the #1 overall pick that means he has the talent to do it all on the field, Colt was a 3rd round pick right? I mean its not even close bro |

Yeah without the specifics yet we don't know what the cap hit will be for the seasons but like you said with your example I think it will be less of a cap hit than what we had if we signed KC. |
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
If Colt McCoy could do the same things as Alex Smith he'd be doing it and not riding the pine as a career backup. Please stop bringing up Colt, it's just not a realistic argument.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
What pisses me off is that you don’t trade your second best CB and a 3rd round pick for a 33 year old QB on the downside of his career and give him lots of money. Iwould have offered 3rd and that’s it. Management sucks!!

You're being ridiculous. Alex Smith has been a starting in the league for how long? Compared to Colt McCoy? If McCoy was all that there wouldn't have been the contract issue with Cousins in the first place, he would've been a free agent a year ago. |

To clarify. I was not applauding the FO for the entire handling of the KC saga. I simply said it was the best option left available. |

Once again when it's all said and done and we are in the mix for a deep playoff run next season everyone will say Jay and co. did a great job. We lost a good 3rd CB for a proven winner at the most important pos in football. I'll take that everyday

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
For the record I do not think Alex Smith is a significant down grade at qb as many have argued he might even be slightly better. I just do not like giving up the talent and the draft pick to get someone who is not the qb of the future. It is a lateral move with a loss of future talent in Fuller and a draft pick.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
Not with this team right now...gotta lotta things to take care.
That may be true, but this move let's the team address those areas both through free agency with more available cap room and the draft with a settled qb we don't need to go chasing one.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
I'm mostly nervous about a second year player and a former WR starting for us next year. Dunbar has played admirably, but I was hoping he would just be depth. I THINK Moreau should be a starter, but we really don't know.
If anything about the Skins, they're exciting, for better or worse. If we hadn't botched negotiations years ago, Cousins would still be here, but this might be the best situation we could have hoped for without going pure Joe Flacco on the team. |
Re: Redskins Trade for Alex Smith
I think Kevin Sheehan summed it up best this morning saying the Redskins made the best out of a mess they created, and it’s a move that will allow the team to stay competitive the next couple years.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
I don't like losing Kendall, but let's think about it this way.
With Kirk - $34 million this year, lose him next year. We still have Kendall and our 3rd next year. With Alex - Cap hit probably around $18-20 million this year, still have him next year (at around the same cap hit), pick up a 3rd round pick next year (for losing Kirk), and we have to replace Kendall. So, the question is: 1. Can we replace Kendall (and upgrade other areas) with the $14 million in savings for this year? 2. Is it good to have some guarantee that our quarterback this year will still be our quarterback next year (and for basically as long as we want him to be in the foreseeable future)? If Alex can perform even close to the same as Kirk in our offense (or even better), then the QB's are even, the 3rd rounder cancels itself out, and you are left weighing Kendall versus $14 million this year and actually knowing who will be our quarterback next year. Not saying this is an overwhelming success (and that I wouldn't rather have kept Kendall), but it ain't bad either. |
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
You guys think Zack Brown would want to return to this shitshow? We’ll see.
|
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
Everyone keeps saying we are getting a third round compensation for KC but my understanding is if we go on a FA buying spree we won't get that. The compensatory picks are for teams that are "losers" during FA. Do I have that wrong?
|
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
We did not get better with this trade.
But we most likely would have been worse without it. You aren’t going to get someone that can match Smith’s production next year without breaking the bank, or shipping off alllllll your draft pics to move up, and a rookie may not even pan out. This was a safe play. For all of you who touts Cousins as being so superior to Smith, look at where it really counts: red zone and 4th quarter. Cousins has never been good either place. So although he puts up great stats between the 20s in the first 3 quarters, he doesn’t make it count when it matters most. |

Agreed. I am disappointed with the trade. It's an attempt to salvage the Cousins botch. Alex Smith IMO is a downgrade from Cousins. We know how I feel about giving up Fuller. However, Smith is a huge upgrade over Colt McCoy. That is not a debate. |

How many times has Smith topped 20 td passes in his career? How do you go an entire season and not throw ONE TD to a WR??? HOW????? This is now 2 TEAMS that have replaced him. WHY? I'll tell you why, it's because he's limited. He's not taking you anywhere. Look at the Titans game? He couldn't make any plays in the 2nd half of that game. KC couldn't wait for a sucker and they called us first. I'm NOT saying Colt is better. What I'm saying is the organization would be better off w/ him as a stop gap, keep Fuller, bring in a vet free agent, keep your 3rd rounder and draft someone. |

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
We went 7-9 this year. We put Smith under center for last season does the pendulum swing at all? I just don't see it. I am not sure how this move gets us any closer to the playoffs let alone vying for a division title.
The pendulum doesn't swing, you are correct. However, not because Smith is 'worse' than Cousins. With the injuries this team suffered this season, aside from having Brady, Rodgers, maybe Brees, this team still finishes 7-9. This move, in my opinion, at a minimum maintains our current position with regard to the playoffs. If you wanted to keep Cousins it was going to take the 3rd franchise tag, period. He was never going to sign a long term deal here. So we got Smith for half that cost this year, and a reasonable contract for the next five years. But hey, we don't have to talk about the QB position any longer - we have our guy, Jay has his guy. Now the team has the resources to make up for the loss of Kendall Fuller and then some. Don't get me wrong, I don't like losing Kendall Fuller, but in big picture terms this is exactly what the doctor ordered. I'll take a pro-bowl QB for the next 2, 3, maybe 4 years for an up and coming CB all day, every day. |
Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
He is good, if you have a stud running game/wide receiver/Pro Bowl TE/defense to lean on. We are 0 for 3 1/2 on that front (I say 1/2 because Reed is a Pro Bowl TE who can never stay healthy).
That is exactly correct. Most average to above average QB's will do well with all the weapons Chiefs have. I am not sold and have never been sold on Smith. Which is why two teams have gotten rid of him. We have tp have a solid team around Smith to win. We do not have that just yet. Depending on what we have up to get Smith, this move is still a big unknown. |

And when we lose next season like we did this season, how long will Smith really last here? KC was ready to move on from Smith after a 10-6 season! And I don't get why folks are OK with last season and say we were competitive. We were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs by week 15. We were never competitive this season. Anybody think we are going to be better when we are just treading water with moves like this? |

This is the bottom line folks, KC is 26-30 as a starter, meaning at best he's a .500 for his career if the ball bounces right, I bet he won't shine with the Jets who I believe he will sign with. |

Cousins is gonna make a killing in free agency now. My guess is highest paid player in the NFL at a 27 million per year clip. That's insane |

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith
seems like you and I are the only ones not mad about this move, I actually LOVE it
I'm with you guys. Well, let's put it this way: 1) I love having Alex Smith here. Solid starter that can take us all the way with the team around him. Or at the very least win games while we develop a prospect (which we could draft this year, next year or the year after that). 2) But I do think the Chiefs "won" that trade, if I'm a Chiefs fan I'm thinking: -We have our QB of the future -We freed 17M in cap room, and Smith was only here for one more year anyway -We got a rising young corner... And a 3rd, we'll take that! So, not sure I LOVE the trade, but I do love that we solved our QB situation at a reasonable price and can move on! |
