Ron Rivera Thread
Shanny asked for that too even pen to paper didn't quite work out that way.
Yeah, but he had Bruce Allen built into the management structure to do Dan Snyder’s bidding. Allen has enormous power over personnel choices and other matters. There is no such person in place now , and Rivera has the right to decline any person who Snyder might try to bring in under the old pattern. I am cautiously optimistic that Snyder and his meddling and micromanagement is over. The next GM and VP will be NFL-savvy and of a far better quality than Cerrato/Allen. They also will only be chosen if they can work closely with Rivera and his crew. Finally, I’m not suggesting that Snyder is closed out of all football issues. He’ll be informed by Rivera. But his current, secret advisor group has far more football knowledge than before and are NOT part of the organization, which means that they’re not giving advise in order to maintain their position in the franchise or to improve it (like with Bruce Allen). A good example of the “before” and “after” Snyder is the case of OC, O’Connell. In prior years, Snyder would have just placed O’Connell as Rivera’s OC. Now, Rivera made the decision. I’m sure Snyder gave Rivera his thoughts on O’Connell, but in the end it was Rivera’s decision. New environment and hopefully a new way of doing business. Because this new way is the only way to successfully rebuild this team and franchise. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
He said that but he also said he wanted some guarantees that the FO guys would be on the same page as he did, that nobody would interfere with his football decisions and that he wants control on this year's draft. That's obviously way more control than what Jay had.
Source? I've heard he wants a partnership with the GM and would like to have the ability to take any disagreements to the owner to settle, but I've heard nothing about him wanting full control on the draft. |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
In terms of the power dynamic at Redskins HQ, Snyder + FO Bootlicker is a bad combo no matter what the original agreement with the HC is. Cerrato/Allen both had Snyder's ear and, regardless of their title or express authority, they were apparently able to exert influence into key franchise decisions during stressful situations that, ultimately, undercut the HC's authority.
The exception this dynamic was Gibbs & Cerrato but Dan worshipped Gibbs; I am betting Cerrato did everything in his power to ingratiate himself to JG while he was here. When Gibbs unexpectedly quit, Cerrato stepped right back up and we ended up with <sigh> Zorn (stayin' medium!) who was 0 threat to Cerrato's influence. I am with CRedskins on this. RR's being the first hire and a commitment from DS that the front office's head will be someone compatible with RR bodes well, IMHO. If the new GM/[Title of Choice for FO head] is Kyle Smith, great. I think he is a solid choice and doesn't APPEAR to be a BA crony - at least I have seen nothing to suggest that. If RR and he are not on the same page, then out he goes. If they are, sweet! While housecleaning is necessary, if quality people can be retained who are on board and compatible with RR's "tough-nosed" professionalism, that is a good thing to me. Giving RR say in who runs the FO is a solid move. RR has said "I don't want to run the organization or be in charge of player acquisition" (or words to that effect). Rather, he just wants "to pick the 46 that are going to play", to be consulted by those in charge of player acquisition about team needs, etc. and to have access to ownership if a dispute between him and the FO arises about the teams direction. So, it seems to me that RR is looking to step into a situation where he and the FO are on the same page. I suggest it is RR's expectation that his relationship with the FO chief will work something like this - -- FO Chief: Okay coach, what are we looking for? RR: Well, we could use a MLB who is good at [X] and a TE who can really [Y] FOC: Okay, we'll work on that. [TIME PASSES ...] FOC: Okay, we got a couple of guys lined up who we think fit your needs. RR: Great. Get them on the roster and we work'em out. IF DISPUTES ARISE: RR: Hey, those guys didn't really work out and we need to move on from them. FOC: Not gonna do that. ... and BTW, we signed X and DS expects him to be our new starting RB. RR: We need to have a sit down with DS and figure out this sh**, b/c this is not how 'teamwork' works. FOC: No need, DS is already in the loop and on board. RR: Yes. Need. DS is not in the loop until he has heard my piece. If he is on board after that, then so be it. Next time though, if you try an end-around, one of us is out the door and I will tell DS exactly that. -- Again, I don't think RR really wants to run things. I do think RR really wants to have things run professionally and that, if thinks they are not, he will let DS know that. |

Re: Ron Rivera Thread
Re Snyder's approach, something tells me this brain trust he reportedly used told him he needed to step away from football ops and let the football guys do their stuff. It may not be a case of RR wanting/having more control as much as DS agreeing that he'd look after the business side and leave the GM & HC to manage the football ops.
It is a little curious not having a new GM in place before the HC, but I suspect that DS was advised to keep Smith in place and if they judge that he continues to draft right (and maybe more so, to RR's needs) then they are inclined to promote Smith to GM and thus have the de facto GM already in place; just official post draft. As long as DS isn't telling anyone who to draft, I'd be good with this. |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
The articles I’ve read say that Rivera will have control of the 2020 draft / FA, after which time they will hire a GM & a VP. Perhaps that means the GM or VP may come from the current Redskins executives that are left (such a Kyle Smith) or from the outside. I believe part of the reason Rivera wants control of the draft is to make sure Snyder doesn’t rebut in any promises he made to Rivera about too much involvement in personnel decisions.
I also saw articles /quotes that say he doesn’t want long-term personnel control. After this draft he’ll work with the new GM, who he will approve. The 2020 draft is critical for Rivera because these players will be on his team the longest for his 5-year contract. Also, the #2 draft pick is a big decision - Chase or trading for draft picks. Both Vinny and Bruce Allen were the same: lackey, azz kissing executives with vast power in the franchise and little football knowledge or ability. Their job was to provide cover for Dan Snyder decisions and be the fan/media punching bag when those decisions were wrong - as they often were. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Out with the old, in with the new!
Still looking for confirmation or source because not seeing this from Kiem or any of the twitter guys who normally share this kind of important info. Also, which additional coaches are staying? Not saying your wrong, just trying to understand how you are certain it is a done deal. |

Good to be back - even if it is only on a conditional basis. The last two seasons, I just couldn't. I. Just. Could. Not. After 20 years of Cerrato/Allen (particularly these last two years of Allen), it is hard to going back to giving a damn. I had been a devoted fan and follower of the team for 45+ years and had never felt that beaten down, dispirited, and uninterested in how or what they did. Allen's complete obliviousness to the fan base finally sucked all enthusiasm out of me. For the first time since I was eight years old, I just did not give a rat's ass what the team did. There is now a brief heartbeat to my fandom again. The GTFO'ing of Allen and the hiring of RR (and now JDR) has me saying "Okay. I'll watch for a bit but I need some wins, some solid moves, SOME F'ING G/D PROFESSIONALISM FOR MORE THAN SIX MONTHS OR THE FIRST F'ING CRISIS, before I invest again." I don't know if a single hire can turn this sh** show around, but I am willing to reengage - but not necessarily drink any kool aid - and see how it plays out. Be warned, my interest is tenuous at the moment and it won't take much for me to say "Nope. I am out" because I have cared too much, too often only to be kicked in the balls repeatedly by the Snyder/Cerrato/Allen "F' you fans!" attitude of this team -- No. F' you Daniel F'ing Snyder. I will not get ball-kicked anymore so prove to me that I should even be in the same G.D. room with this G.D. team. TLDR: For now, I am back, but I am just looking for an excuse to nope out. |

Ron Rivera interview:
“I’ve had four weeks off and time tired of getting up and doing dishes. You guys think I’m joking, but I’m not.” Love this guy. |

I knew I wasn’t the only one who caught that. What in God’s name was that shit about? |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
Two Things on that press conference:
1) Rivera is balls. I actually got intimidated watching and listening to the guy and I was streaming this 1000 miles away, clearly he commands the room. No more "Club Jay" atmosphere that's for sure. 2) Got to give Dan credit, I know 90% of the fans hate him, but I always felt he wants to win. Clearly, he went all out to land Ron. You can tell, from not knowing what holiday just passed (New Years not Thanksgiving), to the bags under his eyes, he has been working his ass off to make this happened. Thank you Dan Snyder! |

A big reason he doesnt speak much and needs to have an Allen or Vinny around to do all the talking for him. just 100% my uneducated uninformed personal opinion Good for him to get out there. |

I still watched all 60 min. of the Cowboys game even though I knew the outcome halfway in. For me it was "I have to wait 8 months to see the Redskins play again, I want my full 60 one last time." Glad to have you back even if it is only for a bit. |
Dan Snyder opening the press conference "Happy Thanksgiving", LOL!
LOL! Credit where it's due, Dan is obviously uncomfortable with being a public speaker and the first step is confronting that fear head on. I am happy he chose to come out and speak to the media directly instead of finding any staffer willing to do it for him. I wish he would do it more often. There is no one man more responsible for how far the Redskins go. Also, idk why but I got a serious Jeremy Piven in Entourage vibe from Dan up there. I know he's probably not that bad but that's the vibe I was getting. |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
Dan said Happy Thanksgiving on purpose per Guice
|
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
Maybe the most meaningful presser since Gibbs left. Im really excited by Coach Ron and Jack Del Rio as DC.
Dan sounds like he understands that discipline and culture change is much needed in the org...I swear to god if he fucks this up.... |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
"Multiple players were in attendance Dwayne was not one of them"
He must have had a more important engagement. /s Dwayne improved his on field play dramatically over the course of the season. The off-field stuff and leadership... He's definitely a work in progress. Rivera admitted he was a project and had a ways to go (don't remember the exact phrasing), but did say he could be a franchise QB. |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
I like RR ,I wanted him in NY just to mess with the press! I think him and Del Rio will make a good pair ,.........do you think Dan has learned his lesson or will he micro manage like he did with Gibbs and Shanahan?

Per Mark Maske:
MarkMaskeVerified account @MarkMaske 21 minutes ago [~2:50] Kevin O'Connell is "still working things out" with Ron Rivera, according to source. So not clear yet if O'Connell will remain with Redskins as Rivera's offensive coordinator.
|
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
Rivera consulted with Joe Gibbs before taking the job. RR: "After meeting with Mr. Snyder, I spoke to Joe and he invited me to his house and we spent a good afternoon going through a lot of things."

Re: Ron Rivera Thread
I doubt anyone else would make O'Connell an OC at this point. Perhaps we could let him keep the OC title but essentially be a QB coach and work with Haskins while Rivera brings in his own guy to be the Assistant Head Coach Offense or something like that.
|
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
Jay Gruden is gonna end up being the worst coach to have a terrific coaching tree.
|
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
I think the KOC route is showing RR isn't going bend to pressure, he is going to pick the guy he thinks is the best for the job.
To be honest I am not sure what KOC has done that everyone has a boner about. Kyle S and Sean M. always felt more like the real deal to me. |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
Rivera said a lot of positive things about Haskins, but he also said:
I also think there's a couple of good veteran quarterbacks that are obviously going to get some opportunities to play as well.
Seems like an odd comment to make if you're 100% behind Haskins as your day 1 starter. I mean, what coaches bring up backup QBs during their introductory press conferences if you have a young 1st round QB who is your unquestioned starter? Maybe he's just not wanting Haskins to get to comfortable. Or maybe he really is going to evaluate all the QBs and make his own decision. That decision almost certainly will be Haskins, but the mere fact Rivera said this could mean that Dan isn't forcing Haskins on him - which is a good thing. Rivera has a 5 year contract. He should have total control during that 5 years over his roster and his starters. |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
I'm with you. KOC has been the official OC for about 13 games.
I wouldn't turn the offense over to him completely just yet. |
