Re: Obama Care
First the health care industry. Now with the changes being made to federal student loans, lots more young Americans are going to be carrying financial debt with the US of A as the lender. Awesome decision given the crapper the banking industry is already in. And it further expands big government. Blech.
I'm all for education, but our banks are hurting too much right now for another multi-billion dollar blow. New rules streamline student loans, eliminate some pitfalls - USATODAY.com
You don't think it's a good thing that the banks, who have been and are still making money hand over fist, are essentially cut out as the middle man? This sounds like an all around win. If the bank lobbyists hate it, then it must be good. It appears to be a win for the students and a win for cutting the deficit in the long run. These loans were subsidized and 100% backed by the government anyway. Now the government can actually save a huge sum of money and charge reasonable rates. |

It's a government takeover of, I have no idea of what seeing how they have always been involved, but if the government is involved it's a government takeover. |
Re: Obama Care
I totally get what you and 12th are saying. I have NO issue whatsoever with the federal gov't lending money to students. In fact I think it's great. Just as far as the United States banking industry is concerned, I don't think we should kick it when it's already down.

I can live with that. |
Re: Obama Care
The feds lending them money is fine and we did that through TARP. The feds lending them money to lend to students is not fine. It is total horse shit to give them money at fed rate and then having them lend it to just students at 2%.
I can remember the Kepone scare back in the 70's like it was yesterday. My parents at the time lived on the Elizabeth River and as a kid all I did was crab and fish in the summer. Then came the Kepone scare and no one would touch the seafood. After a couple of years people figured out you had to eat like 20 fish or crabs a day for like 20 years to even have any risk at all from Kepone. I remember my parents having guess from out of town and we would eat crabs and the people would start asking about Kepone, We would say "oh, its ok to eat the crabs" as we would shake now and then. It became more of a joke as the years went on and it was actually good for the numbers of crabs and fish. In the 80's after they lifted most of the restrictions crabbing was great. We could catch a 5 to 6 dozen fat jimmy's in an hour or so. Compare that with today and it would take me a week to catch that many crabs. The state does a poor job now and it could only get worse if the feds gain control.
FD i will defer to you on anything and everything fishing and water related but this post is what i was getting at. i know around bmore we get algea blooms from the unnaturally high levels of nitrogen (?) that get dumped into the water from industrial plants. book july-august for another fish kill bloom in the inner harbor. i know the strippers are harder and harder to find up where i am, with their seasonal runs now being effected by changing water tempetures. i know oysters used to be plentiful in the bay but now they only survive on federally funded sanctuaries. MD is also looking to use fed money to create soft shell crab sanctuaries. it just seems MD has been a bunch of talk and no action until we got this influx of fed money the past year or so. i think the state does a poor job now b/c states and cities (like maryland and baltimore) have very tight budgets. if baltimore is cutting police and firefighters, you best believe money for environmental efforts isnt going to be handed out. states have too much on their plate and all they do is juggle a budget. i would like the fed gov't to step in and help the states with finances to achieve goals like cleaning up the bay. |

Sure, let the Fed and State work out a good fat contract with some environmental group or chemical manufacturer. That's all that's important at the end of the day, the bottom line. Just ask Al Gore. He has your best interest at heart, second only to the planet's. FD Kepone in the Bay might not be an issue. On the James it still is. It's in the river bottom. People still get sick. Anyone who eats fish out of the James is asking to be hospitalized. That's the government at work. |

I had not even heard Kepone talked about in years until this thread. What was done environmentaly back in the 60's and 70's would land people in jail today so you really cannot compare the two. |

Re: Obama Care
the same way the do with oyster beds. they declare an area as a sanctuary so that you cant fish/drag your rake down there.
to my understanding, the same muddy flats that oysters like, soft shell crabs also go to molt. they want to presevre these areas so that the soft shell crab and oysters dont get disturbed. |

I'm sure Mr.Haney would recommend eating fish out the James, as would Arnold the Pig. Many people have gotten ill from eating those fish. I know some of them. Oh, but I can and I will compare the two. Did anyone go to jail over 9-11? No, case in point. Incompetence and corruption are prerequisites for government jobs. |

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Republican backlash over President Barack Obama's health care overhaul had little effect in the nation's first U.S. House race of 2010.
Florida Democratic state Sen. Ted Deutch handily won Tuesday's special election to replace retiring Democratic U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler after his underdog GOP opponent attempted to make the contest a referendum on the massive health care bill. |
