Re: Breaking News on team name
The name "redskins" wasn't a slur when it originated. It's not used that way now by Washington fans.
It was used as a slur by novelists and later movie studios, some copyright holders in the "entertainment industry" thereof probably still having deep pockets? So why not go after the people who profited from using the name as an insult, rather than the fans cheering FOR the Redskins today?
It was...over 200 years ago. Just like the words Vikings and Yankees were. During the Holocaust rainbows were used to mark gay and homosexual prisoners and was meant as an insult. Now the rainbow symbol is used as a badge of pride and honour among the crowd who uses it. In this day and age none of those words or symbols are seen as insults. |

Re: Breaking News on team name
this has been a hoax anyway. They have no intention of changing the name. All the historical stories have been made up. Its the govt just giving itself busy work for the hell of it. Nothing is/was ever going to change

Re: Breaking News on team name
Sorry to pop this thread up, but I found this article about a Washington State High School whose mascot's name is... the Redskins:
https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/redskins-controversy-high-school-with-debated-name-just-wants-to-be-left-alone/ The majority of people living in this town are Native Americans, and they don't think the name is offensive. Not being American, it's hard for me to get an opinion on this matter, so I found this article interesting because it's written by someone who thinks the Redskins' name is offensive... but is forced to admit it is not to some of the only ones it should (or shouldn't) offend. Here are some interesting parts: -"Take Clarence Le Bret, who at 90 says he’s the oldest male tribal member in town. Controversy, what controversy, he says. “It’s the traditional name we always had.”" -"Here, the kids have their “Wellpinit Redskins” T-shirts and sweatshirts they wear to games or Spirit Week. At games, they chant, “Redskin Power!” Says Kyra Antone, 17, who’s going into 12th grade and is wearing one of the T-shirts, “It’s not a negative name for us. Whenever I think of Redskins, I think of pride in our sports teams. There’s nothing wrong with being a 17-year-old Native American.”" -"That the term is derived from the blood from the scalp of a Native American is in dispute, as is often the case with what is and isn’t historically provable. Ives Goddard, emeritus senior linguist at the Smithsonian Institution’s Department of Anthropology, in 2005 wrote a research paper on the term. He says the assertion became popularized when American Indian rights activist Suzan Harjo said it on the “Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1992. “There wasn’t anything to support the connection,” says Goddard. “But that’s what everybody now thinks.” In fact, he says, it was Indians who first came up with the term when the whites showed up in this continent: “You guys are white, we are red.” It became derogatory in later usage, he says."" -"Let the East Coast fester in the Redskins name controversy. Says Ford, “I use the name proudly. I wear it with respect.”" |
Re: Breaking News on team name
I think there's some southwest US states with reservations that use the name too. It's just that story isn't as interesting as a small percentage of Native Americans calling us racists.

Re: Breaking News on team name
My understanding is that the term Redskins actually derived from the tradition of using red war paint prior to going into battle. The Celts did similar marking themselves with blue dye. Would a team with a Celtic warrior named the Blueskins be offensive?
I do love how PC snowflakes feel the need to take up for a group that largely views the entire name thing as a non-issue. Numerous polls have been done among Native American groups and as a whole they have no issue with the name. My HS are the Redskins and fortunately they haven’t caved yet. My college are the Bullets, some even think that’s offensive. We’ve gotten to the point you can’t say or do anything without hurting someone’s inner child. |
Re: Breaking News on team name
I don't believe I've ever heard anyone use the term "redskin" as a racial slur against Native Americans. I have, however, heard some idiots use the term "chief" that way.
