I'm still a bit skeptical on Tryon. I mean I know that since the spring they've been pretty high on his progress vs. last year. But we saw similar buzz with Leigh Torrence last year.

Still, I'm glad to see he's doing well
Agreed. They're saying some good things about Rinehart, too.
Getting a lot of first team reps, which is probably more so a bad sign about Randy Thomas' status. At some point though guys like Rinehart have to get out there and play. And we (the Redskins that is, not really the fans) have to trust they made a good decision in drafting/signing these guys and put them out there.

I cannot believe how badly Fred Smoot is getting beat at this training camp. Did he steal something from Moss or ARE this offseason?

It's a shame because he is one of my current fav's. He looks like he is on the downside of his career right now. Is there anything he can hope to salvage at this point?

Yeah I mean it seems to me that line play should be rather easy to scout and predict. Especially past the top 10 in the draft and the hype it comes down to some very basic measurables. How strong is a guy, how fast and how smart? How do you miss on a middle round OL prospect? At the very least they have to be serviceable and at best they turn into a pro-bowler. The guy has to be decent.

We all forget how good Thomas was before.

Given the state of our Line, Rinehart's stepping up would not just be huge, but incredible. He was a third round pick, and needs to show now that he can play in this league. Otherwise, it was a wasted third round pick. We need Rinehart perhaps more this year than any.

I love reading that Justin Tryon is stepping up and looking good. If Tryon, Reinhart, Thomas, Kelly and Davis are all able to contribute on the field maybe a few people in this forum and around the league owe Vinny an apology.

Horton is a consensus steal already.

I know I would...mostly for Tryon....I said we should have cut the guy last year cause he sucked so bad...of course he was a rookie, but I thought he grabbed a roster spot we could have used on a better player.
I thought he should have been on the practice squad.

Well he was an All American. I can't really blame the FO for going after a decorated player. I have been wondering why he isn't a candidate for right tackle.

Neither Moreno nor Jenkins, the two guys drafted on either side of Orakpo, have signed. Yet we've had Orakpo in camp for a week.

Kudos to Vinny for getting him signed and kudos to Orakpo for not being a Crabtree.

Well Vinny was doing exactly what people tend to say that he is not doing, building through the draft. Unfortunately people think building through the draft is having every single of your draft picks contribute right away in their first year. For instance...
I know I would...mostly for Tryon....I said we should have cut the guy last year cause he sucked so bad...of course he was a rookie, but I thought he grabbed a roster spot we could have used on a better player.

It appears that Tryon is doing well in camp and I hope that this success translate in the field. If we had been impatient and cut him last year for some cheap older veteran, we would not have been able to develop him. And now we have a possible rare rookie that may be able to contribute (Barnes) along with a 2nd year player that we are developing and should contribute.

Am I the only one who has a vibe that Marko Mitchell is a real sleeper? He really should make the team based on his camp, but probably will end up practice squad... but I just have this gut feeling that he has a better future ahead of him than Malcolm Kelly, maybe it's just me, but I'm putting it out there.

Oh, and I also feel that the combination of Mason & Aldridge could be as or more productive than Betts/Cartwright. I just feel like every Redskin quoted recently makes a comment about Aldridge's speed & cutting ability & Mason's natural football instincts/abilities.

It looks like Collins is going to be getting the short end of the playing time stick versus Colt.

Again another 100% totally agree. But be careful with what your saying. LOL. Some on here would string you up for saying we would get better production out of Mason and Alridge. Honestly, I think it all depends on how quickly the front office and Zorn wants to get younger. My personall feelings ....I could let ARE go and fill his spot with Mitchell or Hackett. I could see Moss, Thomas, Kelly, Hackett (who is still young with only 5yrs in the league) and Eloi. Imagine Moss, Thomas, and Eloi on the field together. Which speed threat do teams cover?

and before anyone else says it....remember Mason was playing against the 2nd string defense. There, for all you Mason haters I put that out there for you. but I like what he brings to the table. He's young, fast, and always finds a hole for positive yards. It sounded like Rock had a difficult day today. I also like the fact they are looking at a speed back.

If I was DS (which obviously I'm not) I'd keep all the young WR's and keep Portis, Mason, and Alridge. The team would be younger, faster, and Portis and Moss could help coach up the young guys.

Here's another one of my personal feelings. I like Collins but apparently the team does not think he's a viable #1. DS has issues with JC and goes outside the team to locate another QB instead of letting Collins take over to see if he can handle the team. He then explores drafting a QB which would learning from scratch instead of making Collins step up. I think the team is seeing him a simply an older vet to fill in if someone goes down.

I know he (Collins) was not planned to play today according to the team but when thrown in either he had a bad day or he simply was not ready cause to me it sounded like he struggled today. Until the end of practice. Brennen sounded to have had a pretty good day as well as Daniel. Perhaps it's time to get younger there also. Just saying. ;)

Ditto. I'm not one of those who think that JC will get a blank check this whole season. I predicted that Collins is in his last season here. IF Colt really burns it up in the pre-season he could easily move to #2 QB with a chance to play out the second half of the season if Campbell can't perform well. JC is on a short leash this fifth season, IMO.

No team in the entire NFL and I mean no team believes he is a viable #1.

I really like Todd Collins if Al Saunders is calling the plays.

If Chase really makes an impression and Colt gets out of his training camp funk I have no problem going with Colt and Chase as the backups.

I have plenty of respect for Todd Collins.

There is no way that Betts should be bumped for Mason. Betts pisses me off with his fumbling but he would start for several teams. Mason would not start for anyone.

I like the idea of Aldridge possibly making the team. I think we should have a scat back and I am all for anyone who would bump Randle-El off punt duty.

Betts was a reach when he was drafted and he is a reach if you think he is an NFL starting RB. He is also the worst running back I have ever seen on the goal line. I would welcome cutting Betts.

SBXVII 08-09-2009 12:16 AM

Re: Training Camp Updates:

Betts is a good #2 RB, and filled in nicely when Portis went down, but keep in mind there was not a lot of teams knocking on his door to steal him away from the Skins when his contract came up. He wanted to test the open market and got no phone calls. My only concern is we have 3 RB's all around the same age and when one decides its time to hang up the cleats I'm betting the other two will be thinking the same thing only cause of age. The team needs to start looking for a Replacement for Portis who can be developed/groomed until Portis is ready to say goodbye. Someone young and talented like a Mason. I'm in no way saying he's ready to take over for Portis right now. but I'm sure he would do just as well a job as Betts did.

Lol. Whatever you say, dude.

The worst runningback you have ever seen on the goaline? Ever? Why because the Giants had 3 guys in the backfield on every play in '07 when we ran left? (I was screaming at the TV for a bootleg on 3rd down but I am not sure Gibbs ran a single one in version 2.0 even though Campbell is an above average scrambler). I don't even have to bring up another team to dispute that.... Ever seen Mike Sellers on the goaline?

I don't recall that being true. I remember the Jets wanting him and I also remember that he decided to take less money in order to stay in his comfort zone. When was he signed? I don't think he ever hit the open market.
