Re: Coaching Staff update
No, there was also the issue of whoever we put back there didn't get far either. Ever see Moss run a punt back for a TD lately? Um, No. Ever see Thomas run the KR back for a TD? Um, No. It's obvious that part of the problem is the scheme.
Even with Moss back there, it seems that we didn't do a good job blocking for the punt returner...like Moss or Thomas didn't have a chance to run it back. |
Shanahan signs former Broncos draft pick
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 14, 2010 1:47 PM ET The Denver-to-Washington pipeline is open for business. Let it be known: Center/guard Kory Lichtensteiger was the first signing of the Shanahan era. A fourth-round pick by Shanahan in 2008, the lightweight lineman was cut by Denver, then Minnesota last year. Former Broncos running back coach Bobby Turner became Shanahan's first official coaching hire earlier Thursday.
I know you guys probably already know this or have seen this but did you notice... the part about Bobby Turner being Shanahans first official coaching hire Thursday? I didn't know this... I thought Kyle Shanahan was his first. Matter of fact I thought there were a few other coach's hired prior to Bobby? Lou Spanos, Richard Mann? Are these people who have agreed to terms but have not come and signed their contract? Is that why Bobby is technically Shanahan's first hire? |

I am sure this is Non News but: Sherman Smith officially not coming back.
You're kidding right?
I may have exaggerated a little, but I really disliked SS as offensive coordinator. Even his leaving comments ring of kissing up and throwing his buddy Zorn under the bus to be looked better on by the NFL. I really am glad he is gone. |
Re: Coaching Staff update
Here's another ST coaching option:
Panthers punt special teams coach Posted by Mike Florio on January 14, 2010 4:06 PM ET Ted Daisher of the Eagles wasn't the only special teams coach to get treated in an unspecial way on Thursday. Danny Crossman of the Panthers also got to take the long walk to the parking lot, cardboard box full of picture frames, comic books, and Power Bars bouncing off his legs. The Panthers announced today that Crossman has been fired. Crossman has a year left on his deal. But since he's not being paid $6.5 million in 2010, the team apparently was willing to pay him not to work. Crossman has been with the Panthers since 2003, coach John Fox's second year on the job. The Panthers struggled this year on special teams, finishing 30th in kickoff coverage, 29th in punt coverage, 30th on kickoff returns, and 17th on punt returns.
How about any college ST coach's? |

Re: Coaching Staff update
JLC has reported that Danny Smith is being retained as Special Teams Coach. This means we have atleast one more year of ARE returning punts. Hooray.
I'm not sure how many times it's been mentioned that coaches have kept ARE back there.. I'd think Smith would pick someone else but is getting overruled, but who knows |
Re: Coaching Staff update
JLC is reporting that Danny Smith is likely to stay on. The Skins have denied permission for him to interview with Seattle, Pittsburgh and Detroit.
Mann is almost certain to be named WR coach by this weekend. Olivadotti possibly in line to be assistant LB coach.
I've got no problem with olivadotti staying.. he's lasted through several coaches for a reason obviously |
Re: Coaching Staff update
Ok now see we're going after a coach who couldn't do anything with 5 pro bowl lineman, but if he comes here everyone thinks he'll do good with our 1 pro bowl lineman.NO, theres a reason he was fired, and you mentioned it above, that "he didn't do a good job with their D-line. Apparently he didn't get enough out of them". Of course reports from the organization is that he was a good coach, the they want him to get a job. Then again I shouldn't be too mad about this because Haslett isn't any better that guy got fired a lot more.
Haslett has run the 4-3 the past 2 teams he's coached on the saints and rams, so Don't assume that since he ran the 3-4 ten years ago that he'll do that here. Keep in mind everyone that Shanny wanted Zimmer who ran a 4-3 with Cincy and Dallas (Wade Philips brought in the 3-4 to Dallas).
parcells had zimmer implement the 3-4 |
Re: Coaching Staff update
Soooo, your ok with a ST coach that stays with ARE fair catching punts, keeping Shuism instead of attempting to get better at that position, keeping the same punter until he got hurt and got lucky with a backup, developes a blocking scheme that nets you 26yrds only on returns? I guess his scheme is good enough cause the bright side is other teams usually don't get a good return.
Edit: Big,... have you been taking your medicine lately? Whats with all the positive feed back? ;) sorry gotta pick. I don't know if April refused to interview or not but if he didn't the Skins need to get him. Screw Smith.
You think that the ST coach is making big personnel decisions? LOL yeah, I bet ST coaches all across the league cut players hahahaha |
Re: Coaching Staff update
He went behind Smith's back to go to Zorn. I wouldn't even say it was behind his back per se. Smith tried a couple of times to bench him, thought he had. ARE decided to take it up with the head coach and plead his case and Smith was overruled.

LOL (Except it was Sherm Smith, not Lewis who I was talking about) |
Re: Coaching Staff update
You think that the ST coach is making big personnel decisions? LOL
yeah, I bet ST coaches all across the league cut players hahahaha
Well let me say that on any other given team I would think the ST coach has some say if not total say as to who plays on his ST's. Obviously it would have to go through the HC cause I doubt some teams would want their star WR getting hurt or their star RB. Some teams don't care, like the Eagles who used Johnson as KR/PR and WR. ^but as we know the Skins were disfunctional so I guess Smith gets a slight pass. If I was Shanahan and had no other options I'd name Smith also but I would tell him he has 1 year to do something with the ST's. No one can argue that he has the guys tackling well when trying to stop a KR or PR. The issue is our own blocking in those situations. Maybe with a little freedom Smith can show he's not just another ST coach. |
Re: Coaching Staff update
whats going to happen or has happen to sherm lewis?
|
Re: Coaching Staff update
We should go after the guy who the Eagles let go, they have had multiple returns... Ofcourse they have great talent but the blocking has been good for them on ST for years.

Texans offensive assistant Matt LaFleur is interviewing for a job with the Redskins. LaFleur assisted WRs and QBs the past two seasons.

not much to cheer about this past season... laying low.
but there is hope! the future is looking shiny! |
Re: Coaching Staff update
I thought we had already hired Mann to coach WRs? Personally, i'd rather have Mann, if for no other reason than it would increase the likelyhood Antonio Bryant signs here as a free agent. Bryant and Thomas as our #1 and #2 with Moss in the slot... would be nice.

Re: Coaching Staff update
Is anyone else concerned that the O-line coach position has gone unfilled? With Alex Gibbs reportedly going to Seattle, where does that leave us.
I mean, I think we would all agree that O-line is the position we are weakest and in need of the most focus, so who's going to reshape that unit? What candidates are available familiar with the zone blocking schemes Shanahan wants to install? |
Re: Coaching Staff update
I agree Mc2guy, Im pretty happy with the staff thus far. I think Haslett is a gamble, but it could be worse. However, I really want to see them bring in a top tier O line coach.

I don't have any reason to know that, but it is clear that the OL needs a new coach, and that it was weak last year, so I hope they are doing solid in depth work at available coaches to see who best fits what we have here and what we need. I also think they are pulling their "comfort zone"(coaches they know/have worked with in the past) coaches in quickly so no one else gets them. |

Unfortunatly I think whoever we bring in will not fill his shoes. I'm almost 100% positive that they will be way over qualified compared to Hixon. Sorry. But think positive. :) |

Re: Coaching Staff update
Looks like Jerry Gray has been offered the Seatle job. Supposedly, he is not sure he wants it and the Redskins may outbid them for him to stay. Not sure for what. I would think that if this were true he would jump at it.
