WASHINGTON -- While he's "disappointed" with Albert Haynesworth, all else seems fine with Dan Snyder after a rough year as owner of the Washington Redskins.


Snyder acknowledged a different vibe and a cultural change now that he's appointed Bruce Allen as general manager and Mike Shanahan as head coach.

"It was necessary," Snyder said Saturday at the dedication of an inner-city football field that has been refurbished by the Redskins and the NFL. "We were 4-12 and going in the wrong direction, and all the changes are to get us going in the right direction. Obviously with the pedigree and the success of the people that I've brought in, you can tell we're going in the right direction. I'm real excited about it."

In the last five months, Snyder has ousted longtime front office head Vinny Cerrato and fired coach Jim Zorn. The changes came with a price: The owner known for his hands-on approach has given Shanahan the final say over the roster.

Snyder downplayed the change in his role.

"I think the approach has always been a little more hands-off than probably written about or reported about," he said.

Snyder cited the leadership of Donovan McNabb and nodded "We'll be OK" when asked about the status of getting the new quarterback a contract extension. McNabb's current deal expires at the end of the year.

Haynesworth is another matter. The Redskins have paid the two-time All Pro $32 million in guaranteed money over the last 15 months, but he skipped two voluntary minicamps this spring and stayed away from all of the team's offseason workouts mainly because he's unhappy with the switch to a 3-4 defense.

"Yeah, I'm disappointed he's not here. Absolutely," Snyder said. "We're expecting our players to lead by example, and we're expecting our players to understand that they're Redskins and they need to be there."

Haynesworth is expected to attend the mandatory minicamp next month.

AH hasn't done enough to have earned the $32M. Maybe with Allen and Shanny we'll get some players who care about teamwork, not individual stats. No more AH's or CP's!

I know this will look like I'm simply blindly defending ESPN but what PD is referring to I'm sure is more so his interview with Mike Wise of the Washington Post, not ESPN.

This whole "albert doesn't want to play NT thing" is so blown out of proportion. He said it once, and now everyone assumes that's what everything's about.

I guess you could maybe possibly somehow argue that by choosing to workout on his own, he's "dissing" McNabb and Daniels but that, to me at least, is a stretch

I seriously doubt it's blown out of proportion. In fact, I think it's completely true and accurate. Do you think Haynesworth and Allen are going to have a presser and say, hey guess what, Albert doesn't want to play nose tackle? I know there are a lot of reports and stories and "sources" out there right now, but I'm inclined to believe someone who's inside the building at Redskins Park a couple of times a week. So Jason Reid is reporting back in January there was a meeting between Haynesworth, Shanny, and Allen and they told him in no uncertain terms that they want him to play nose tackle. Period. They don't want him getting after the quarterback, they want him drawing double/triple teams and eating up space. Haynesworth basically said he wasn't interested in playing NT and that's not what he agreed to when he inked the deal with the Skins.

Now from what I understand, neither side is happy but won't publicly say so. Everybody expects Haynesworth to be in camp on June 16 for the mandatory workouts and he'll say and do all the right things. If for no other reason, he doesn't want to be a distraction and not giving the organization a reason to fine him. Which, by the way, as of yesterday he's not interested returning any of the bonus money in order to buy his way out of Washington.

When Albert Haynesworth was interviewing with teams across the NFL, including the Redskins, he made it clear that he had specific goals in mind. He wanted to get to the quarterback a lot. He wanted to have career stats. He talked about Reggie White's legacy and how he would want to be a Hall of Famer one day. So all of this fuss isn't about him training alone or at Redskins Park. The guy is flat out unhappy about the whole situation.

You know what gets me?

Albert probably doesn't want to play NT but that was never Haslett plan in the first place.

And Even if Haynseworth doesn't want to play NT he's never said it that way.

He's said that he doesn't see himself as having the bodytype or style of play of a NT and he's right he's too good to be a typical 2-gap NT.

Albert was pretty good on the field last year, I imagine that there will be a repeat of that this year. He worked well with his teammates. Despite what we want to believe it's not a part of their contract to be there for voluntary camp, to teach rookies (that's what we have coaches for), or to be media darlings. How many of you guys show up while not getting paid to mentor new people? Outside of the office team-building activities (that don't involve drinking), etc?

The main reason AH is getting all this attention from the media, is that Brett Favre and the Vikings are keeping their would be Circus under raps. Now once that story starts getting legs under it, AH will be put on the back burner.

lol BHA will pull the smallest thing at times.. take someone's opinion, make it fact, etc

now of course the media does focus on particulars as well, a small spark will set off a fire.. not all of the time, but in cases like this it's pretty evident..

Yep, and not to discredit the staff at the Skins and for me to mention for the 11tyth time that he decided on this before our new regime was even in place (let's not forget how abysmal the training program was as reported by former staff and players) but think about the Olympics.. these guys didn't become the best by staying in the same gym that they started in, they got people to train them and ended up typically getting the BEST to train them. His trainer can focus a lot more on HIM solely.

The only real thing that Albert's said about it was that he talked to them about how he thinks that he can best be used (same thing he did before coming to the team to begin with). He also said that they planned to have him in the middle some and on the end some and that once he looked over the 3-4 DE assignments he felt that it was close to his techniques in the 4-3 at DT so that would probably be the best fit for him. I think that we ALL agree that he wasn't used properly last year and I remember quite a few of us weren't happy about that. We signed the guy with promises and if anyone was being selfish in that regard it was us, whether The Danny called for it or not. Who knows if he would've went to another team had we not promised him the world.

i don't think i'm the one misunderstanding anything that statement. if you have listened to Allen's discussions throughout the offseason, he's consistently made a point to say that most of the rumors reported in the media arent true. for example, he was on espn980 prior to the draft and said that most of the rumors out there regarding the skins werent true. in the same context he said the skins were investigating a lot of options, but that little movement happened at the top of the draft and also that its rare that players get traded during the draft. the implication was that every team is investigating a number of options with varying degrees of seriousness and while alot gets reported, most of it never comes to fruition, either the teams decide not to, or because it was never a serious discussion anyways. he also acknowledge that teams deliberately put out misinformation all the time.

so again, in that context, i believe i interpretted allens statement correctly. he was absolutely not trying to make a statement about how he doesnt have time to read all of the reports out there, so he's not going to say they're all wrong. the mere idea that ALL of the reports and rumors out there are wrong is completely moronic. some of them, even if by mere chance, would be correct.

the broader point is that you cant beleive everything you hear, either by the media or by team representatives. in many cases, parties have agendas they are trying to push. in general, i tend to side with the media, because while a team is always trying to push an agenda, the media SHOULD tend to be more unbiased (although we all know this is often not the case)
