I honestly don't see how anyone who has at least known a handful of cops on a personal level, could think they are mostly good moral people. First unlike most people blood is not thicker than water with me, so whether the cop was a relative or a friend of a friend I judged them like anyone else. The most honest cop I knew was a friend of a friend. When asked "Dave, why did you become a deputy sheriff?" (He worked intake for holding cells at the courthouse). His answer was, "Where else could I make $90,000 a year to sit on my butt all day long without any skills or education?" The worst guys were the ones who wanted to be cops and could not make it, of those there were two types. Either they were attracted to good pay for no skills or education, or people who had been bullied, or like to bully and wanted power. Not saying real good cops don't exist, but they are the exception to the rule.

I actually know quite a few, friends and family included.

My thought is the exact opposite, the truly bad ones are the exception from my experiences.

tragic but I don't see this as the definition of a trigger happy cop. You step out of the car, AND pull something from an obscured view after a cop pulls you over. Simply not smart.

I also question your statement about the shots being fired without aiming. Not sure how you can possibly know that, and it would shock me if he didn't. No point in firing a gun, unless you know what you plan to hit.

I would not call him negligent (And as a rule I don't like cops) off of that dash cam video. The thing is dash cam videos provide a 9 inch 1965 black and white TV view. With that in mind the cane looked similar to the extra long barrel of one of those guns they used for so called "turkey shooting". Problem is the officer sees in color with the clear picture of a 65" 21st century flat screen. We don't know what color the cane was and "cane guns" actually were manufactured in the country from the mid 1800's through the 1930's. Obviously if the cane was wood colored it could not be a dangerous weapon. Unless I saw what happened through the cops eyes I could not deem him negligent and 100% positive this was nothing more than an accident

I think a what to do question if stopped by a cop should be on every driver's test and taught in driver's ed, over and over again. We have checkpoints here
in Caroline County Virginia, even in very rural areas (Like I live in a communist country). Whenever stopped I leave my hands on the steering wheel and don't even breathe unless instructed to.

The old man gettin out of the truck is inexcusable on the old mans part. This day and age you just sit in the car w the window down and your hands in plain sight, anything else and you are asking for trouble.

However my definition of a trigger happy cop might be a little different than yours. IMO a trigger happy cop is some one who panics in fear and immediately steps to deadly force. Not necessarily someone who is playing cowboy and can't wait to show his force, although that type is equally as bad.

And as for him not aiming, it is just an assumption on my part, but if I remember when the first group of shots were fired it appeared as if they hit the top of the cab of the truck. From 30 some feet away w a 9mm it is inexcusable to be that off with your aim. It appeared like he regrouped after those first 3 shots and fired another 2 which appeared to strike the old man. All the while without ever identifying what the old man was carrying.

To me cops should be held to a higher standard and should be able to show more restraint. I just feel that the gun was fired too early and if the officer had followed all training and protocol there wouldn't have been an issue. If its me and I see someone getting out of the car, I wait behind my door until everything is in plain sight and I have complete control of the situation.

You are watching too much television. Anything more powerful than a .22 LR (The next step up from a pellet gun) will go through a car door, they are a thin sheet metal skin on very open thicker sheet metal frame. Hiding behind a car door in a shootout isn't much better than a cardboard box. Most people who acquire their knowledge of ballistics from Hollywood movies won't know this.

Barking up the wrong tree Bobby. I've actually never been to Hollywood, however, I have been to Ft. Leornard Wood in Missouri. While there I went to Army basic training, after basic I went to the Military police school. While there, wait for it, I was trained as a police officer. And on top of that training, I also have quite a bit of in field experience in Baghdad, Iraq.

If you would hide behind a cop car door and feel safe you must have been asleep in class or playing with your cell phone. Cop cars don't have anymore structural reinforcement in the body than a car off the dealer lot. Look at the Bonnie and Clyde death car. Cars in the 30's had a lot thicker metal than 21st century ones and bullets went right through the doors. No formal training but I shoot crap all the time right out in the back yard. Next time someone tells you hiding behind a car door is safe tell them to stand behind one while you shoot at it.

Nope no sleep, no cell phone, just paying attention and trying not to get screamed at by a drill sergeant.

And to be fair I never said I would feel safe, I just said I would take cover. Cover doesn't always mean a solid wall. Getting out of a direct line of sight goes a long way in a gun fight. If you would rather stand in the open than stand behind anything, have at it. If I think someone is going to shoot at me I'll make do with what cover I have at my disposal.

A car door is more than just sheet metal. There are rods, levers, and other metal within it. The sheet metal will most likely stop lower powered guns, but certainly not the higher powered ones. That said, those doors will still slow those bullets down, and it'll mean a lot if those officers are wearing bullet proof vests (as they should be). In the end, some protection is better than none.

Unlike what most of the anti-gun crowd believe the AK-47 has no more power and usually less (depending on ammo) than your average hunting rifle. So the same type rifles people hunt deer with (30-30, 30-06, etc) will go through that door also. I would be curious what ammo they were using with the 9mm, pretty sure with the right ammo it will also go through that door. I have shot through water heaters (4 pieces of sheet metal plus insulation) motor cycle gas tanks (thicker than car door sheet metal) computer towers (through the sheet metal and side ways through floppys and hard drives) with a .357 and they are basically the same diameter bullet and with stronger loads the 9mm are pretty close to the .357 in velocity tests.

As for hiding behind doors, does anyone remember the law enforcement shootout with Christopher Dorner? That happened in Southern California in 2013 so maybe it wasn't big news here. He was firing from a cabin in the woods and there were more than a dozen cops. The smart cops were hiding behind trees, the second smartest behind fronts of cars with an engine compartment between them and the shooter. Still had a few using car doors and truck beds as shields. Who trained those guys? There were plenty of trees left to hide behind and your average rifle bullet will only go a few inches into a live tree.

To other people here, I can understand technically "by the book" the lethal response of shooting the guy when he brandished lethal weapons (knives, assuming that part is true). But even then shooting the guy in the back, as he had turned away from them? There's nowhere for him to go. And I can imagine a homeowner being convicted if he shot an intruder in the back, like that.
