Re: Redskins Training Camp Thread wk 1
I agree with that to an extent. They still need to get a significant amount of push up the middle, which was lacking last year. Orakpo and Kerrigan can do there job but if the quarterback just steps up because there was no pressure coming up the middle then no matter what your linebackers do the quarterback will pick apart the defense. I felt like there were times last year where the ball would be snapped and 5 seconds later all the DLinemen were almost relaxing at the original line of scrimmage.
I think it will be extremely difficult to play good defense if the Dline doesn't play better than they did last year. I'm sick of watching Big Ben and other quarterbacks look like they will never get hit in the pocket.
Cofield and others didn't do that bad a job in the middle, IMO. I think if Orakpo stays healthy, he'll make our pass rush look much better this season, by the attention he'll draw from opponents. |
Re: Redskins Training Camp Thread wk 1
- Earlier I mentioned Bringing in Seymour for depth, but as Matty pointed out, he wouldn't come here to play 4 games. I somehow blocked that out of my head earlier.
- I feel like --myself included--we are all acting like Jarvis is gone for the year. He's gone for 4 games. Eagles, Packers, Lions, Raiders. I see fast tempo, great passing offense, overrated team, and the crappy old raiders. I only see 2 games which we would definitely need Jarvis's pass rush, run defense. Its not like we're playing Denver, Atlanta, San Fran that stretch of games. We'll survive. Plus we got Orakpo back and I think Daryl Tapp and Brandon Jenkins are going to be great Pass Rushers for us in that stretch especially. Oh and we get Chris Neild back to push the pocket more. Again, we'll be fine. - Our DL right now is: LDE NT RDE Chris Baker Barry Cofield Stephen Bowen Kedric Golston Chris Neild Phillip Merling Ron Brace -DHall getting hurt is temporarily a good thing, because that means he can see more Biggers, Amerson, Crawford and Minnifield in the preseason going against #1, #2, and #3 WRs. |
Re: Redskins Training Camp Thread wk 1
Anyone else a little worried about this report (from the WP's Mike Jones)?
● LeRibeus, who was drafted in the third round in 2012 to eventually anchor the interior of the line as a guard or center, has struggled quite a bit this camp. He missed all the offseason practices with injury, so is still working his way back into football shape, as Shanahan likes to say. But he has yet to appear to make strides forward. He has worked exclusively at left guard in practices, and no longer at center, as he did last training camp and in practices during the regular season until Lichtensteiger got hurt. Kevin Matthews seems to have replaced LeRibeus as Will Montgomery’s backup. I confess I am disappointed. You'd like to see a 3rd round OL take steps to improve and contribute, but it sounds like he's regressing. I hope it is just that he's recovering from injury, and not that he's not going about his business like a professional and putting in the hard work. Our OL was remarkably healthy last year, and we cannot assume we'll have such good fortune this year, which means we need the non-starters to really step up so there's no massive drop off.
he was a 6th round pick taken in the 3rd round. i was scratching my head when they made that pick and won't be too shocked if he doesn't pan out. it sucks, but not every pick is a winner. |

Reed Doughty quote from a Washington Times article on the Rookie DB's:
“We’ve added a lot of young guys over the years, but these guys are really talented,” he said. “They seem to be grasping the concepts really quickly. My job is just to help them out as quick as I can, and I think they’ll surprise some people.” Now that's what I like to hear! I can hardly wait to see them play in the exhibition games. |

it sucks, but not every pick is a winner.
I also felt that he was drafted too high. This year, he came into camp fat and out of shape. He has some talent but if he doesn't want an NFL career enough to push himself away from the table and get to work then someone else will take his job. Adios. Next man up! |
Re: Redskins Training Camp Thread wk 1
Reed could easily be a coach. He, Rex, Josh Wilson, and maybe Santana Moss are considered the most knowledgeable on the team in terms of being able to understand and explain plays/formations, etc.
As for LeRib, he and Gettis both have to step it up and differentiate themselves from the rest of the pack. I think the team will have a bit more patience with Josh though. I don't see him going anywhere That said, this regime (outside Trent Williams) hasn't really done a good job with drafting OL and developing them...yet |
Re: Redskins Training Camp Thread wk 1
As much grief as Ive given Reed, you gotta find spaces on teams for guys like that.
Im not gonna say told you so on McRib, but... |

Im not gonna say told you so on McRib, but...
He played his ass off in our last game... one of his best games as a redskin by far... i too, have given him alotta shit in his time here but have a re-newed sense of respect for the guy.. he always gives it 100% and thats worth something. |
Re: Redskins Training Camp Thread wk 1
The reports on LeRibeus are disappointing for sure, but it's still too early to give up on the guy. He needs to get serious and step it the hell up.

REED has been dogged a bunch on here (me included) but he gained major props last year by busting his ass every game. He's a true team guy

Re: Redskins Training Camp Thread wk 1
I'm not sure why people are so down on Reed. He's a limited player physically but always plays hard, gives everything he has and is the most sound tackler we have. I can respect a guy like that. He's never going to be Sean Taylor.

I think because so many times in the past we have seen opposing WRs catch bombs in the end zone and Reed is stumbling behind them. |

to be fair, when poor scheme or poor execution leaves reed 1 on 1 w andre johnson for a jump ball . . . .andre is going to come down with it. Reed seems to always be in the right spot at the right time but hes just an inch to short and a step to slow on some plays. physically he has no business being in the NFL but his iq and dedication keep him earning a paycheck. i like reed, he reminds me of bowen. |

Re: Redskins Training Camp Thread wk 1
The only problem I have is from what I saw the DLine didn't really provide any pass rush last year, and Jenkins was the only player who I thought could improve from last year, as compared to everyone else who pretty much hit their ceiling. So the Redskins probably won't be worst than they were last year, but the problem is they won't be better. Which is a big problem when the opposing quarterback has 8 seconds to throw the ball.
Agreed that Bowen and Cofield can't be expected to produce more than they already do, which is pretty damn good actually. We need more pressure from the LDE position indeed, but Rak's return will help and I still think the biggest factor is defensive scheming. We need to create pressure from several packages, ILB and corner/safety blitzes as well. London is still surprisingly effective as a blitzing ILB and our corners have been quite good. I think if Haslett and Fletcher continue to scheme for pressure with various packages and having Rak back in the mix we'll see better pressure this year. LDE would be the cherry on top. |
