I'm sure we had sincere interest in Mitchell, but not enough to pay him 5mill per year. We are too many players away to outbid other teams. I'm glad the FO realizes it.

If no news is good news, then we must be in great shape with Corey Graham and Antonio Smith. Have there been any updates?
Certainly, this safety class isn't as deep as last year's, but there'll be some good ones available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Calvin Pryor from Louisville(possibly late 1st), Jimmie Ward from Northern Illinois, Deone Bucannon from Washington State, and Terrence Brooks from Florida State will all be drafted in the 2nd-3rd rounds. Pryor and Brooks would probably be our best bets among those listed, being free safeties. My favorite is Deone Bucannon; he's more of a strong safety.
Pryor likely will go in the 1st and we will likely have to trade up to get him.

The other choices you listed are ok, but are developmental players who likely won't start in 2014. We still need a FS for 2014.

Perhaps we will see a viable FS in the draft fallout: given that the draft is richer this year, it stands to reason that June 1 vet cuts will be richer than ever.

I disagree completely.

In this safety market, $5MM/yr. was a good price for him. Remember, we would have probably paid him $3.5MM in the first year, with one player dropping out of the Top 51 at approximately $500K, so that would have been around a $3MM cap hit this year.

Plus, we have no decent safeties! We should have outbid the Steelers in this case. Bottom line: the FO failed to land the quality young safety that we need.

Thats a little concerning because at least going in it seems like there hasn't been a highly regarded safety class for a couple years now. Though looking back last year was probably the first respectable class to come along since 2010 (Eric Berry and Earl Thomas) and before that 2007 (the year Landry was drafted).

To put it in perspective Scouts Inc has 11 players at Tackle this year with a 3rd round or better grade compared to just 5 safeties. Maybe not the best apples to oranges comparison but then again you usually play with 2 tackles and 2 safeties so might not be too crazy.

OR

the FO decided that their evaluation of him didn't equate to the $$$ he was asking for.

OR

he decided this team wasn't the right fit for him and his aspirations.

OR

he wants us to change the name before he joins the team.

We are way more then 1 safety away from being a good defense... Overpaying for a free agent on top of a crappy roster got us where?

This is a good point and I kind of see what Allen's plan is. He's trying to build a team through the draft. The modest signings are patching some things up, but he's not building through free agency. He needs a couple more really strong drafts before I see him being aggressive in free agency.

I also think he's expecting better play from some of our young players, and the ones that were injured last year.

The point is they wouldn't have been overpaying in this market.

Four years ago we all thought it would take Shanny a few years to get rid of the bad contracts and smart drafting for us to field a contender.

Now, we all think it will take Allen a few years to field a contender.

I dont think we are far off from having a chance with a healthy griffin but the rational side of my brain says in a few years, we will replace Allen and be talking about how we need a few years to field a contender.

Thank goodness we have RG3 or i would have zero hope going forward.

if he is healthy, and the price is right, Spencer would be a tremendous addition........ he has 32.5 career sacks, and 12 forced fumbles

in 2012 he had 11 sacks

Jason Hatcher has a visit scheduled too

We were a contender two years ago with a healthy RG3, I'm more worried bout his health than this years draft pick and free agents.

First, I'm still waiting for a move in the safety position, and I'm disappointed we weren't able to get Byrd, or perhaps Mitchell. I agree the numbers didn't seem too high for Mitchell.

But to be clear, we did draft two young safeties last year. There's a remote chance Rambo gets better (?), and PThomas may come back healthy. We still have possibilities with Merriweather / Doughty again and perhaps d.Hall in the future. They are all sub-par with question marks but we do have some options. By strengthening a pass rush, improving the LB core, and getting another good CB, we could still get by.

Finally, we could luck out on an old veteran that's dropped over the next few months after the draft and preseason to get us by for one more year...

So Hatcher has visits with the Raiders and Seahawks. Doubt we end up with him.

With what Denver has done do you even sign with another team in the AFCWest for anything but the money?

We havent improved yet..

I like that were being conservative. but im just not understanding why we havent inked an IMPACT player yet. Say what you wanna but im into winning.. you know.. having a higher score than the opponent. We havent done anything these first two days in my eyes its the same team with an improvement to special teams. Luavo & campbell are benchwarmers they cant protect griff.

be patient we are 3 days into free agency, there will be no bargains early, and over spending will limit the options. I would much rather several B and C level players.....How many big contract free agents have ever helped the Redskins ?

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread

I think this may be the plan: The Skins are targeting specific young players who are affordable. If they can't sign them, then they will fill the needs temporarily with proven veterans who can give them a year or two. Draft players for the positions that are not filled by young FA's.

I've changed my mind about Ryan Clark. I hope he signs with us. He is a good veteran who can only help us for a while. He will mentor our young safties.

If the Skins hadn't seen something they like about Lauvau and thought that he would be a good fit, then they wouldn't have signed him to a 4-year contract on the first day of FA. I'm keeping an open mind about him.

Anthony Spencer's microfracture surgery concerns me. Is Antonio Smith out of the picture?

Hatcher left Seattle without a deal. He'll be in Oakland today. The Raiders have tons of cap space but they continue to look like hell as an organization. There may be a chance that Hatcher visits us, after all, either because of the Saffold debacle or because he is determined to make all three visits. I would prefer Hatcher to Spencer due to my concerns about Spencer's health.

I think that any one of A. Smith, Spencer, or Hatcher would improve our defense. I'd actually like to have two of them.

I'm thinking that ILB can wait until the draft. We have Riley, Keenan, and Hayward. We can re-sign Barnett and draft Borland or Skov.

So PFT confirms that we are trying to trade for Sproles. I think he would make a great addition, but I just can't see giving up more than a 6th or 7th for him. According to Schefty, NO thinks they should get a 3rd or 4th. That would piss me off.

Can you imagine them getting a 3rd for a player they were going to cut? Neither can I.

They are not getting a 3rd or 4th from anybody. It is simply a negotiating tactic. They're probably being offered a 6th or 7th, so they think they might be able to get a 5th.

I can't imagine it, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. I think even a 5th would piss me off. I on on the fence about a 6th, but I would be ok with it because I think Gruden will be able to get good use out of him.

The interest in Sproles is not just about winning now. It's also about helping RGIII to develop as a pocket QB. RGIII could use an outstanding receiving option out of the backfield to help him keep the chains moving and the pass rush off-balance. Getting Sproles is a good idea, it's not a fantasy football move.
