Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
I don't think Snyder is stupid or vindictive enough about RG III, to blame Kirk or hate the guy. After all it was the Kirk issue that cost Scot his job. Snyder needs stability now more than ever. Seriously, if he messes this up, the franchise is back to square one, not to mention after Gruden gets canned, who the hell will want to even be seen in Redskins Park, let alone be the Skins HC? Fans are already at the breaking point, and with DC now a winning sports town, the moderate fans can go elsewhere for sports entertainment whether it is the Caps or Nats. Even the Wizards aren't all that bad anymore. Skins fans need to be way more proactive in the event Snyder botches the rebuild. I don't think he will, but if he does, they need to stay home or show up with the paper bags over there heads like Lions fans did in the Matt Macmillan days. Snyder needs to take his cue from Mr. Cooke and just sign the damn checks and enjoy the football.
There is definitely something going on.
IMO I think Snyder wants a glamour boy QB. Some one he can party and pull some hot ass with(lets not pretend married billionaires are faithful). Kirk isn't that guy.
Snyder you would think needs stability or else fans will start to ditch the team in droves. But who knows. There is another possible logical explanation a signing hasn't been done already that hasn't been mentioned for awhile, and that is a trade indeed is being planned or is on the table for further discussion. I don't think that will be the case, because of the stability issue I mentioned above, but we are talking about Dan Snyder. |

Denver low-balled their Super Bowl MVP (Von Miller) and did not make a long-term deal until the July deadline last year. And there was plenty of drama from leaked details of the negotiation to Von Miller taking shots at Elways in social media. This is how deals typically happen in the NFL. It is annoying as hell for us fans, but people need to quit acting like this doesn't happen elsewhere. Honestly, I'm more concerned at the fact that the team has been very frugal in its spending, than any other drama stuff.
This is a totally different issue. Cousins beat out the guy that the owner basically had a man crush on. Gave him special treatment and mortgaged the future for. After 2015 a deal should have gotten done but it didn't. Why? Also in the end Denver signed Miller and a deal got done. Not the case here. Again, I put this on Snyder. It's personal with Cousins. He can overpay low quality human being like Haynesworth, or overpay Norman, who's a good player but not a great one, but can't get a deal done with his franchise QB. Seems pretty obvious what's going on here... |

You make it sound like we are the only team with a franchise tagged player which has dragged out negotiations on a long-term deal. This is how the NFL is run, this is how teams deal with negotiations period. This is all business, both sides are looking for a number and they have NO REASON to budge at the moment. And yes this is the same situation, just a different player position. |

SF69 has a point here. How much do they need to see before they know if he's the guy? Does he have to win a SB first? There's no doubt he's the best QB we've had in a long time. Other than Roberts first year. Unless you're sure you're gonna get someone as good as him in the next 4 years freakin' get it done. We've already spent more than we needed to with this Tag shit. This makes it look like they're really complete idiots when it comes to evaluating a player. Is he as good as Peyton? I seriously doubt it. But can he help us win a SB? I like his chances better than anyone we've had in years. If they were still doubting me after the numbers he's put up the last 2-3 years I' wouldn't want to be there either. Fix the fxxxking defense! |

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
I have no idea what they are trying to accomplish in regard to Kirk's contract. It's as if the Skins slipped off the river bank and fell in the river up to their necks and then decided to walk toward the middle of the river to see if it got any shallower out there.
SF says they are "open for business" to trade the second pick in the draft. We should petition the Skins management to put us out of our misery by trading Kirk to SF in a deal that includes the #2 pick. They are already dangerously close to losing Kirk after next season anyway. |

This is why I keep bringing up the example of Von Miller and Denver. After his SB MVP performance, you'd think that it was a no-brainer for Denver to sign Von Miller to a long term deal. Miller was the best player at his position, had basically won Denver a Super Bowl, and he was in his prime at the time he was tagged. Yet the contract negotiations went through a lot of drama and back-and-forth between the team and Miller's agent. I am concerned that the team is going to botch this and not make a deal. Personally, I feel that the team is being too careful in not spending money. However, I am not surprised that the deal is not done and I don't expect the deal to get done until July. Kirk's agent or the Redskins have no reason to budge on each other's demand. |

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
Team president Bruce Allen said the Redskins would be willing to place the franchise tag on Kirk Cousins next offseason.
"Yes," Allen said when asked directly about tagging Cousins for the third year in a row. "In the collective bargaining agreement, we really have one year and an option that we can do at the end of next season if we don’t get a contract." Tagging a player three years in a row is intentionally cost prohibitive, and Cousins would be due $34 million if Washington tags him again next spring. The Redskins have other options, however, including the transition tag ($28 million) and non-exclusive franchise tag which would both offer the right of first refusal if Cousins signs an offer sheet somewhere else. Of course, all of this madness could be avoided if Washington matches Cousins' contract demands by the July 15 deadline, but that is unlikely at this point |
Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
Sigh... can someone over in Ashburn ban Bruce from talking? The more he talks the stupider he sounds. He can't even get his starting QB's name right.

I would say it's more likely now than before the draft: they didn't draft a QB, they didn't trade him like a lot of people expected... Not matching his offer would be crazy, they just HAVE to! Even Cooley and Kevin seem to have lost hope of a LTD before the deadline, I don't get why. Even Bruce saying they are ready to tag him a third time (which make them sound delusional) could really well be the Redskins trying to get some kind of leverage in the negotiation... |

As Andrew Brandt puts it, deadlines spur action. I honestly feel that a deal will get done, but it will be at the 11th hour. If they have to tag him again next year, so be it. |

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
Honestly, what sticks out to me is the first positive comments KC has said about staying in DC have come AFTER SM was fired. Before this it has been consistent "the ball is in their court" blah blah blah.
Also last year at the combine SM was talking to the media in full "its not just about the QB" mode. KC is so careful and well coached in what he says I cant help but put some weight in the fact that the only positive comments KC has said in two years have come in the last month..... |

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
Not going to make excuses for Cousins but our squad was not remotely set up for red zone success. No size at WR, calling fades, mediocre goal line RB.
If he still sucks at it this year, no excuses. There's length at WR, a smash mouth beast at RB for short yardage, no excuses now. |

If the Skins are concerned about Kirk's Red Zone play and they wait yet another year to see if that improves prior to seriously trying to sign him long-term what would that contract look like, how much would it adversely affect re-signing other players, and would Kirk even want to be here after all that has transpired? All of those questions are still unanswered. Depending on what, if anything, the Skins still want to see from Kirk before they make an honest attempt to sign him LT, they may never see it. Yet that doesn't necessarily mean he wouldn't be a good choice to be The Man at QB for them. It is one thing to be risk adverse to a reasonable degree and another to be paralyzed by indecision. I'm beginning to think that Skins management is afflicted by the latter. |

Even if we don't improve in the redzone (and I hardly see how we could NOT improve), with a better defense we are a playoffs team... I want them to sign him, and my guts say it will happen just before the deadline. The only thing worrying me is: do they want another year to see what KC's capable of without Sean McVay?... |

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
If it is not an 11th hour deal on July 14th, I think they are content to allow KC to play under tag again this season. They might tag him again next season, but I doubt he will play under that tag. Chances are if they have to tag him that third time, he will be traded before that tag takes affect. Can't see Bruce Allen paying 32m for one year. But I also cannot see him letting KC walk without anything to show in return.
