Re: Ron Rivera Thread
That was a good start to the Riverboat Ron era of Redskins football but, and this is a nitpick, some one dropped the ball on the press conference setup, not putting a jersey where RR expected it. The Skins media group has always been lacking, and this was a muff on his intro press conference.

Also, why should a coach commit to a QB that he wasn't part of selecting, nor has had the time to review tape or see the other options. It's not like he's coming on a team with a Rodgers, Brees, Brady, etc....

+1 I'm not reading into it too much, if I had to guess I'd say he's gonna make Haskins earn that starting job. Not a big deal to me. |

RR said in the press conference, "Things will begin and end with one simple principle...discipline. I come from a military family where discipline isn't taught, it is lived. It is expected from day 1.....you are NOT to going to play for this team or work for this team if you do not have it.....no exceptions...no excuses." After Jay Gruden this is a breath of fresh air. |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
There will probably be quite a few guys gone. Everyone is all about discipline until actually having it enforced. Club Jay guys are going bye bye.
Bama Boys gotta be excited. |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
I have to say, I am more optimistic about the direction we're headed than I can recall for a long, long time. Since Gibbs 2.0 (even RGIII's rookie year made me think that it was too good to be true, and it was). Rivera will set a real tone. I just hope that he can get a good GM that he can work with. I understand the desire to lock him in as quickly as possible which is why he was hired before a GM, but that is one hiccup over the course of the last week or so.
Mostly, I am glad that Snyder shit-canned Allen. I said that he had 24 hours to do that after the season ended, or I was done for good. And quite remarkably, he did. |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
I would add that in his introductory remarks, Snyder said that the Redskins needed a culture shift. That was a complete (if unintended) rebuke of Allen's stupid "damn good culture" gaffe.

Re: Ron Rivera Thread
To me, this was the most eyebrow raising and hope-inducing thing I read today:
Rivera said there was no reason to wait. He said he had pointed discussions with Snyder about his ownership tenure. Rivera said they went through every aspect of the organization. "That's what I was really impressed with. He was willing to sit there and go through it piece by piece, and we truly did," Rivera said. "We talked an awful lot about those things. We talked about the things that he's learned, and he's grown as a person and as an owner. It was a very frank conversation. He was very honest, very upfront and very candid."

And those close to him say seeing Snyder get emotional about the franchise during their meetings helped win him over.
What Snyder has learned, how he has grown, candid, emotional. Dare it be seen as the quintessential Come To Jesus moment? John Keim, great piece of writing as always. Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk
Keep him in the loop. Makes all the sense in the world. His whole life he was a Skins fan. He just wants to be part of it. To a fault for sure, so much that he has overreached, meddled, buddied up to players. So make your decisions, just let him feel a part of it. Gibbs is the master at handling people. He makes it sound so easy, Dan Snyder obviously isn’t easy. But this is very insightful, thanks for sharing. |

Re: Ron Rivera Thread
I want to say one more time how blown away I am that none of this leaked out.
35 hours at Dan Snyders house over the 3 weeks leading to BA's firing. Discussions between Rivera and Gibbs. Family pasta nights! And then Schaefer leaks his own non-dismissal. We had a rat in BA and any rats that are left need to be trapped and released into the wildernes. I AM NOT definitively calling Schaefer a BA rat but his move was pretty cheesy. Re: Ron Rivera Thread
Snyder actually spoke. You could see how nervous he was...lol
I like that Gibbs was involved simply because Dan respects him so much. It's the honeymoon phase so everyone's happy right now. But it was so good to hear this guy talk, he commands the freakin' room. These guys will get this defense better. Very confident in that. But he isn't a miracle worker. The last game he coached his defense looked like they quit on the guy if you ask me. My only concern is will he be too old school? Especially when it comes to the offense... |

Maybe my post wasn't that clear either. My overall point is Rivera is asking for, and getting, way more control than the previous coaches were getting. And that's including Shanahan who was overruled by the owner on his effin' starting QB. Rivera obviously is aware of the previous mistakes made by this organisation, and it seems he sat down and talked about it with Dan in a honest and up front enough way to get insurance he wouldn't get down that road with him. |
Re: Ron Rivera Thread
I believe that after 20 years of failure Dan Snyder finally got it right. He set up a secret group of NFL guru’s (who are not with the Redskins) and have them analyze the franchise over a month before Black Monday. Snyder talked to Gibbs (and probably his secret team) who recommended Rivera. Then Snyder called RR and begin to sell himself and this team. Snyder made Rivera care about correcting this failed franchise. Dan proved to RR that he desperately cares about the ‘skins and that he would make whatever changes were necessary - including changing himself!!
It is clear to me that RR also talked to Snyder frankly about Dan’s many failures as an owner - such as by meddling directly in football decisions or using his toady, Bruce Allen, to do it for him on the sly. Snyder also probably had to admit to his micromanagement concerning player issues or using his VP/GM (Cerrato/Allen) to make many franchise decisions outside their scope of control. I give Snyder credit for discussing these issues frankly with RR and admitting to his MANY MISTAKES. It’s tough to acknowledge one’s large errors in front of a potential employee. Look where this team is compared to our competition. We’ve moved quite fast, but with deliberation, and secured one of the best HC out of the group of candidates!! I remember reading an article on the NFL HC search about 3 weeks ago, which asserted that because the Redskins were one of the WORST teams and had the WEAKEST management (out of the eight or nine teams without a coach) that we’d ONLY secure our HC by taking someone from inside the team’s management. Inbreeding. How wrong the author was about Snyder and this team. He moved quickly with his advisors, fixed on his target HC, schmoozed him, acknowledged his past mistakes to RR, promised not to repeat these errors, hired RR, and stood out of the way as Rivera began to build his staff, gather the best coaches, while getting rid of the old dead wood coaches. Finally, I liked that Dan started the press conference, even though he is clearly very nervous as a public speaker. Even though he is disliked by the fans and media. That takes guts to be on live tv! He said that the franchise starts and ends with Rivera. Also, he boldly stated that Rivera is in charge of building a WINNING CULTURE! This is what many of us wanted. It’s time to believe again! Although I still think we’ll be average next year, we will build a winning culture and we could go far. This team is finally making the right moves. I never thought I ever say this but, “well done Dan Snyder!” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I'm going to take a wait and see approach. I just don't trust Snyder. Particularly when it comes to Haskins. It didn't sound like RR was all in with him, nor should he be. That's Dan's guy. We shall see how that plays out if RR doesn't end up wanting him..

1. The Ron hire and the Dan press conference (which he did a great job and said all the right things) have come off great 2. Combined with the young talent, No 2 pick and Cap space 3. Bruce out of organization The Skins brand is on an upswing, if you wanted to attract a top notch GM candidate from outside the organization, now is the time. |

Re: Ron Rivera Thread
I was listening to the morning show on Sirius XM NFL radio and Bob Papa was talking about the Rivera hire. They were discussing Snyder’s past history of meddling and Bon said he has a friend in the Skins organization he spoke with during the week 16 Giants game and Bob was asking the guy about this topic. Bob said the guy from the Skins organization said you would be surprised how hands odd Snyder has been the last couple of years despite what the media would tell you. He said it basically had been the Bruce Allen show.
Hopefully this guy is right and Dan has been trying to stay away, he was just letting the wrong person lead things. I’m hopeful!!! |
