Re: First place Redskins

The more I watch the gameplan on offense the more it brings me back to Scot McCloughan's quote before the season regarding 2015 paraphrasing,
we might not win a lot of games in 2015 but teams will know they played us for the next few days
...and it makes me wonder if building an identity is the goal right now above all else. If you look at the way the offense is being called they come off like a Seattle/SF except they can't run the ball so it looks like a hot mess often, however the fact that they insist on still running the ball on most first downs regardless of the fact that it gets stuffed or even goes backwards tells me that Scot McCloughan is still in big picture mode rather than prioritizing the results of this season.

I wonder if DY could line up as a Tight End a few times a game at least for the purpose of blocking? His lead blocking for Morris under Shanahan was pretty stout.

Get him out there line him up, get him involved.

I don't think McClu vision involves sucking at running the ball. I don't think our current run game resembles Seattle or the 49ers at all.

Well what I am saying is that our personnel in 2015 is dictating the running woes moreso than the plan on how we are going to be built.

The running game looked a lot different before Lavauo and the other starter went down. That drastically changed the ability of this line to run block. The offense early in the season was much more run-heavy.

Just because injuries have dictated an immediate deviation doesn't mean the bigger picture which will take 2-3 offseasons to see through, is not still the goal.

Re: First place Redskins

To end up in first place we need to have a 4 game win streak(win out and we go in) or a 3 game win streak (with Philly and NYG losing to better opponents -AZ/Car), or win 1 road game, and have a 2 game win streak, and other teams mess up (lose to Buffalo, beat Philly/Dallas, then a convoluted tie break)

Can this team win a few in a row? Are they getting to that point? I still am not sold on that.

FWIW...pro football focus has Breeland now rated as the 7th best corner in the league. Not bad...when I watching Sunday I kinda felt like he is our best defensive player on the team.

Breeland is going to be our R. Sherman. (who was a 5th round pick).

Wasn't Breeland a 4th round pick?? But yes, he is gonn be great, I envision him having a Josh Norman breakout season next season. He really could have 6 or 7 interceptions right now

I think we could win the division by going 2-1 in our final 3 games.

It sure would help if we could beat Buffalo this week. With Phiily playing Arizona and the G-Men playing Carolina, the odds are good for us to take sole possession of 1st place with a win. Dallas might even lose to the Jets which would eliminate them.

I have a creepy feeling that it will all come down to the final week of the season when Phiily plays at the Giants and we play at Dallas. I may need some valium, a seat belt, and my Teddy Bear to get through that week.

Just because injuries have dictated an immediate deviation doesn't mean the bigger picture which will take 2-3 offseasons to see through, is not still the goal.
I see it very differently. There is no doubt that injuries have played a roll. But lets be clear we are running the ball at an historically bad level for this franchise. I would understand the run game dipping some due to injury...but for me losing average level players should cause the run game to drop off a cliff. And most importantly there haven't been changes to the scheme based on loses in personnel or the dip in production. Jay/staff do the same thing every week most of the times its tough sledding then every once in awhile we play a defense that sucks against the run and we have success.

I lean more towards scheme then personnel when it comes to the run game issues. Jay/staff have shown some tendencies in the run game that have been consistent and the decent defenses exploit them. Even Cooley has started to point out some of these issues. Then there is how the personnel is being used i.e. not scheming DY into the offense as a blocker vs using TEs that are known to be inferior blockers to him. Rotation of backs Etc.

And to be clear I don't care how we produce offense/score points and win. If Jay wants to and gets it done via the passing game I'm all for it. But, imo Jay's focus on the passing game is partly responsible for our run game struggles. Those teams you mentioned run the hell out of the ball in attempts and that is one of clear differences with this offense...the attempts its the attempts (ask Mike Shanahan) which is directly related to the focus of the offense.

Maybe, its 50-50 personnel vs coaching..... but imo scheme is a factor that is limiting the run game.

But back to the larger point. I think Scott will support whatever type of offense the HC wants to run. But just because a team is pass focused doesn't mean they can't be the physically dominating team that Scott wants to build. A lot of that comes from the defense. I think our offense will end up close to the Bengals offense when Jay was there except more pass focus all we need is to find that elusive......#1 WR.

My son and I have come to that conclusion. He is a complete corner - tackles and competes for every ball. Kerrigan has started to pick it up lately but Breeland stands out to us every game. '

On a side note - love Matt Jones hustling down field to block on Sunday. One was on a Jordan Reed reception, the other was on jump ball, fumble and recovery. The reason that play happened was Jones hustle to block, that is how good teams make their own luck. Have to believe this is carry over from the linemen hustling down field the last few weeks.

Re: First place Redskins

I think one issue with the running game is with Matt Jones being your typical young RB with speed, he is not patient enough and often wants to get somewhere before blocks are setup. Gruden eluded to this a few games back and noted how he is improving on this matter as the season is hitting it's final month.

While his game against Chicago wasn't great, I did see some improvement by him, especially in the "toughness" category as not only did he flash some speed but he also straight up bull-rushed defenders on some rushes that led to an extra 2-3 yards. That final rush that sealed the game with the 1st down? It put a huge smile on my face.

Yes, Breeland was a 4th rounder. I was only pointing out that Sherman was a 5th rounder to highlight that All-Pro CB's can be found outside the first round.

Sherman was chosen in 2011 and had a quicker rise to fame than Breeland. Of course, Sherman had Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas as his safeties from day 1.

Also, the Sherman was picked, the Skins picked DeJon Gomes eight picks ahead of him. Niles Paul was picked immediately after him.

Please don't remind us of that, but Breeland does look like that next breakout up and coming corner

Did anybody else watch Dallas V Green Bay?

GB was running the ball out of shotgun with a RB and FB, and 3 WR and no TEs. 20 personnel.

Depending on what look Dallas was giving, they ran or passed.

It would be a great way to put your best players on the field. Motion Reed out as a receiver or keep him in if nickle. I'm no expert but seems like that would create a ton of matchup problems.

We can do that right now. There is no reason we can't.
