Gus Bradley also qualifies as a near no-brainer. It'd be smart and it would mesh with the philosophy McC is trying to build.

Early buzz: Gus Bradley is atop Redskins' list of defensive coordinator candidates. GM Scot McCloughan knows him well from their time in SEA
Here's the link: REPORT: Former Jags Coach Emerges as Redskins Top Defensive Coordinator Target | 12up |
In 2014 he was benched and I think he and Snyder were already off on the wrong foot. Remember the reports that Snyder called Gruden's agent in 14 and said..."your guy is stealing" That can't be confirmed but I probably think Gruden went for a DC that would not threaten him.
I'm not saying you're wrong but I never heard anything about that. I am sure Snyder was disappointed we gave up on RG3 though, so it's possible. |

I know people are saying he isn't one of those coordinators who can work with any talent, but it's not like we're sitting here saying we're alright with our untalented defensive roster. McC knows what he has to do this year. |

I'm OK with it as well. Wade Phillips will probably keep his job in Denver, so he would be out of the running anyway. Gregg Williams probably wouldn't come back after what happened when Gibbs left, so I think this is the best choice. I don't believe the Redskins are in a position to hire someone who has never been a defensive coordinator before. Bradley has the experience and has had success. McCloughan will work his tail off to bring in the talent that Bradley needs to succeed. I really believe this is almost a no-brainer, because Gruden's job probably hinges on the success of this hire. |
Re: Gruden fires defensive coordinator Joe Barry
Guys, did you listen at Cooley & Kevin's show from yesterday morning, just a few hours before the firing?
Cooley and Kevin | ESPN 980 I'm amazed by how accurate they are. Cooley has some pretty deep sources, and insights! They were saying it's not only a DC problem (in fact Cooley says we can do better at DC but Barry's scheme isn't the main problem) but also a defensive staff issue, because, among others things, DB coach let the DB room go completely dismantled, not coaching the guys into playing this defense as designed and as called. And a few hours after the show, pretty much exactly what they said needed to happen happened. Just wow! They either are pretty close to the decision makers, or effin football wizards! |

I don't know the ins and out, but I think its interesting. We seemed to see a lot of secondary players not play as well as last year. |

Yeah. Norman was the only one who seemed to be able to play at his close to best level. And he has a strong mind. Something in the coaching didn't help these guys play at their best level. Don't know what, because I wasn't mad at the effort. Missed tackles number way down, some stops being made despite the apparent lack of talent... You know what? With a little bit more talent, and the right coaching, we might have a pretty good D next year... Wouldn't bet on it, but with what we are hearing it's far from impossible. |
Re: Gruden fires defensive coordinator Joe Barry
Exactly my point. Can he co exist with and take orders from someone else?MHO...no.
he did prior to getting a head coaching gig . . . and plenty of of other strong minded head coaches have gone back into coordinators . . . easier job and still tons of money . . . don't know for sure if he can, but he was a great 3-4 DC |
Re: Gruden fires defensive coordinator Joe Barry
Hi everyone....My first post so go easy on me. I am new here but been a fan of the team for 40 years and was a Season tix holder from 2009-2012.
Gus Bradley also qualifies as a near no-brainer. Granted, he wasn't the DC but he had to have a heavy hand in the D overall. In 13 and 14 they were worse than the Jim Haslett lead Skins D in YPG, and 3rd D %, and both teams were bottom 5-7 in PPG allowed. In 15 Jax was worse than JBarry's Skins in PPG allowed and 3rd D % and both teams were among the league worst in YPG allowed with the Skins only 5 ypg better. in the 2016 season the Jags had the #6 overall defense in YPG allowed which is way better than the Skins but not as good as it sounds when you realize that, like the Skins, they were in the 5 worst in the league for PPG allowed. The Jags had a respectable 3rd D % this past year VS. the Skins historically bad 47% but I can't get excited about this small difference. Bradley's D since he left Seattle seems to be about on par with Haslett and Barry. Doesn't seem like a good solution to me. |
Re: Gruden fires defensive coordinator Joe Barry
The defensive players/coaches really sounded like a total dysfunctional shit show. Whoever comes in here really has to roll up his sleeves and command respect from some of these clowns. Breeland seems like the guy that's leading the clown show. If it is in fact Bradley then does that mean we're going back to the 4-3 full time/ base defense?

If you want an explanation for why the points allowed was so rotten, look no further than the short fields that turnover machine Bortles put them in. |

I can't even believe how many times we need to keep saying that it doesn't fucking matter whether we are a 3-4 or 4-3 base. Last year we played in a 4-3 more often than we played in a 3-4. |

Where in Bradley's past has he made something respectable out of chicken shit? Never. He seems like a upbeat, good character type of guy. But the rah rah stuff only goes so far. On the flip side I do think he is motivator and that may be half of what we need. Some of these guys need someone to kick them in the ass and play harder/smarter. |
Re: Gruden fires defensive coordinator Joe Barry
If we have no talent on D next year we are in trouble anyways. Bradley can work with the type of talent SM likely beings in so I will be ok with that. I also like a HC that drops back down to DC as long as he can get along with Gruden which i dont think is an issue. I think they often get a wider perspective and it enhances there effectiveness as a DC.
