This Marcus Mason fantasy needs to end. He is the new Leigh Torrence. Both suck. That is why neither caught on anywhere when they were dropped.

Walt Harris was and is 1000 times better than Leigh Torrence and Marcus Mason is probably the 6th best back on the team counting the Caveman.

Wow, I guess you are right. Could you do me a favor and put a phone call in to Zorn and let him know cause now I'm baffled as to why they even challenged San Diego for Mason's rights? Especially when they could have just let him go cause he sucks like LT.

Quit drinking and typing. So now Marcus Mason is in the same sentence as LT?

Why not Barry Sanders and Walter Payton next? He did lead the league in pre-season yards last year....

We are holding back a future hall of famer...

Do you really think he is going to make the roster?

What hostility? I just love fantasies where a practice squad player is proclaimed better than a back who ran for over 1100 yards sharing the load for much of the year.

Don't worry about my personal life but your sister came over so you know the answer...

My bad on the "LT" reference. I should have known Leigh Torrence is "LT" now...

Too many people have this fetish with Marcus Mason just like too many think that Leigh Torrence is some great cornerback. That is why I compare them.

I will spell things out better for you next time. Sorry about that.

Personally ...he should. He's no worse then Betts and is a better RB then Rock who should be carrying the TTB name now. but to answer your question honestly, no he won't. For whatever reason people are afraid to shake things up. They would rather have 3 almost 30 y/o RB's instead of drafting, or signing a younger RB to groom to take over for Portis.

See, I completely disagree that he is no worse than Betts. Mason racked up his pre-season production when the scrubs were on the field. You think Betts wouldn't look like Priest Holmes against the 3rd and 4th stringers?

If Mason was better than Ladell Betts or Even Rock Cartwright he would have made the roster last year. Mason is a liability in pass protection and is not ready to be counted on in prime time. If San Diego (or any other team for that matter) really wanted him they could have given him a real contract.

You didn't have to. I for one knew Torrence sucked. No different then I know Westbrook sucks. I think it says a lot about either our scouting personel or position coach's who think some one will eventually become a super star.

but I do like Mason. He atleast gets positive yrds compared to Rock. I would prefer Mason over Rock any day. Plus at this point we have several people who can do exactly what Rock does. Don't forget Betts did the KR job before Rock. Thomas WR did it in college, Hall can do it, and I belive we have used Moss in that capacity atleast once or twice. I think the team could live with out Rock. and just like you and Mason I'm am just as confused about the love fest for Rock.

As for my sister visiting you last night........whatever works for you dude.

Although Zorn did said Heyer will be 100% by tomorrow (or next day?) and that Bridges's injury is just low ankle sprain.. Still, this makes me nervous..

Re: Training Camp Updates:

I find the hostility and negativism toward one player so interesting. Is it simply because he was not drafted? People comparing a 2-3 yrs player against 3 players with 7 yrs in the league. I guess everyone expected Mason with the limited playing time that a 4th RB could get would get to learn how to block in his first yr out of the gate in Gibbs system. Then changing to a WCO learn how and who to block all over again under a new system. I mean people have made excuses for Campbell...right. He's been in 4 or 5 different systems since his college days, He's having to learn a new offense every yr, He stuggles because of the O-line play. I guess these factors don't count for a young undrafted RB like Mason.

If I remember correctly Portis was having trouble not only in preseason but during the regular season with his blocking scheme. The team even kept Sellers back in order to help with the blocking in a couple of games and both missed on a few blocks leaving JC to get sacked, but no animosity for a 7 yr player for whiffing on a few blocks. I remember Zorn mentioning Portis would get the blocking down. Am I to presume that Mason being a 4th RB with limited practice time would do as good or better then those ahead of him? No he would not. I also love the ...."Mason got all his yards against camp scrubbs." Yes he might have but he had camp scrubbs blocking for him as well. Which means basically you guys also don't put a whole lot of faith in our first line O-line to be able to create a hole for him to run through because all I keep hearing is "Mason would not have done that with the first line offense."

I'll ask again, Where is all the animosity for the other players who sucked? Thomas only got in on a few plays and according to JC he couldn't trust DT cause he would run the wrong routes sometimes. Kelly was injured and sat out. Westbrook.....if anyone deserves the negativity on this team it should be him, what has he done in 3 yrs except sit on the practice squad taking up space? Rabach, could the team get anyone else who is under sized and got bowled over by teams utilizing the 3-4 defense? Rogers......as much as I'm rooting for him he seems to be another Springs, a CB who gets injured every yr and is only in half the season. Yet no animosity for Springs either. Heyer was an undrafted rookie the same yr where's the animosity towards him? He should have been camp fodder also. Unless he's completely worked on his run blocking over the summer he will suck at it and be one dimensional....pass blocker only.

Mason must be the person people either love him or love to hate him. and if the latter is the case I feel sorry for Colt. Oh, wait...he was drafted right.

No I'm not denying that. but is it difficult for people to say Mason is a good runner but won't make the team because of the RB's in front of him or is it easier to simply say Mason sucks. Mason can't block. Mason wouldn't do as well against a first line defense. Mason won't crack anyone elses team. etc. etc.

SBXVII 08-09-2009 11:30 AM

Re: Training Camp Updates:

and....if the team had not brought in 2 smaller speedier scat back type RB's and simply brought in Mason alone I would say he has a chance. With all the players on the team who can KR/PR on the team I think Rock is expendable, but with the team looking for a change of pace back I see Rock getting replaced with one of them before he gets let go for a RB who would be doing the same thing as Betts and Portis.

Re: Training Camp Updates:

I like Mason. No one is saying he doesn't have talent or doesn't deserve a shot. Even Zorn likes him. He just doesn't like him better than Betts. Betts has been getting great reviews all camp and for good reason. The coaches aren't making it up because they owe him anything. They didn't draft him. Don't take my word for it, read what the reports from the coaches about Betts have been saying. Mason has potential to be good in this league, I don't deny that and have no reason to, but when people want to cut a proven back that the coaches seem pretty high on just so a preseason favorite can make the team and project him as the next Barry Sanders even though 2 other teams didn't see enough in him to make them think they should "lock him up", it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I think right now he's at a disadvantage because I think the coaches are looking for more of a speed back. That's why we brought Alridge and Dorsey in. Some good players are going to be cut, you can't keep them all, and with Portis and Betts on the team, who I think the coaches give a longer playing life to than the fans, what exactly would Mason do? Sit on the bench until they retired? He has not yet proven he can play ST's and he is being given the opportunity. What more can he ask for? Standout on teams Mason and you may make the team.

From Redskins.com twitter page on today's morning practice-

Jeremy Bridges sitting out with an ankle sprain from yesterday's scrimmage, but Heyer and Mike Williams are back on the field practicing.

Orakpo practicing with the D-lineman today.

Anthony Alridge out today with a sprained toe from the scrimmage.

Santana Moss still out, nursing that hamstring.

Devin Thomas not a full go, but had his helmet on and participated in some drills.
what is the opinion of those that have been watching the QB position at the camp?

It looks like Collins is going to be getting the short end of the playing time stick versus Colt.
Whether it is by design from coaches or instinctive reaction, QB Jason Campbell is checking down to RBs and TEs most of the time. Conversely, QB Colt Brennan likes to take more shots down field and the result is not always positive.

9:50:32 am
Rookie QB Chase Daniel appears to be improving with each practice. His arm strength and accuracy are developing nicely.

2:56:06 pm
QB Todd Collins just threw his second TD of the scrimmage. The last was to WR Keith Eloi who did most of the work by breaking several tackles before diving in for the score.

2:55:22 pm
QB Jason Campbell is working with second and third string players and he looks average at best.

2:54:23 pm
There are some who are practice players and then there's rookie QB Chase Daniel. Daniel who has struggled the first week of camp led the second offense to a score against the Redskins first defense.

2:35:21 pm
QB Colt Brennan was unable to move the second offense. Brennan dropped the ball as he was preparing to throw deep.

Re: Training Camp Updates:
Here's another one of my personal feelings. I like Collins but apparently the team does not think he's a viable #1. DS has issues with JC and goes outside the team to locate another QB instead of letting Collins take over to see if he can handle the team. He then explores drafting a QB which would learning from scratch instead of making Collins step up. I think the team is seeing him a simply an older vet to fill in if someone goes down.

I know he (Collins) was not planned to play today according to the team but when thrown in either he had a bad day or he simply was not ready cause to me it sounded like he struggled today. Until the end of practice. Brennen sounded to have had a pretty good day as well as Daniel. Perhaps it's time to get younger there also. Just saying. ;)
I don't think that you really want to put Collins in at number 1 at all unless you're going into playoff chances and Campbell gets hurt. While he hasn't had his body worn down from being a backup for so long, I think that at this point you're looking to see what your younger guys can bring to the table.. whether they can lead a team, whether to use them as trade bait, or whether to cut them.
Betts is a good #2 RB, and filled in nicely when Portis went down, but keep in mind there was not a lot of teams knocking on his door to steal him away from the Skins when his contract came up. He wanted to test the open market and got no phone calls. My only concern is we have 3 RB's all around the same age and when one decides its time to hang up the cleats I'm betting the other two will be thinking the same thing only cause of age. The team needs to start looking for a Replacement for Portis who can be developed/groomed until Portis is ready to say goodbye. Someone young and talented like a Mason. I'm in no way saying he's ready to take over for Portis right now. but I'm sure he would do just as well a job as Betts did.
Nobody wanted Betts or Cartwright, so yeah... I like Rock but he's a special teamer, not a running back.. Betts is a number 3 on a stacked team at best.. he's a number 2 for what we have available but that's about it

Whoever the Skins keep, I hope they use him. I'd love to see them employ a 3 back system similar to the Ravens and Giants, especially if one of the backs is a change of pace speedster that can take it the distance.

Here's a highlight clip on Aldridge for anyone interested: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOkLuTtckKs]YouTube - Anthony "Quick Six" Alridge[/ame]

In '06 I think it was more of the fact that the offensive line was on fire. If you plug any decent back in there they would do the same. This was a year where the o-line deserved a lot of credit. Betts needs to learn how to be s hort yardage back. He is horrible around the goal line and Portis is far better at beast'n his way in the end zone.. Betts..NOT

Re: Training Camp Updates:

A little update on Alridge and Dorsey:

Running backs Anthony Alridge and Dominique Dorsey are competing to make the Redskins' season-opening 53-man roster as special teams players, but coaches also are interested in having a change-of-pace speed back to complement top back Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts. Alridge and Dorsey have home-run potential, coaches said, but in order for either to earn a roster spot, he must hold on to the ball, and Alridge and Dorsey have had problems in that area during camp.

Alridge, who did not practice Sunday and was in the trainers' room receiving treatment for a sprained toe, has been particularly careless, fumbling several times during an afternoon practice last week. He also fumbled in Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage, which disappointed Zorn.
