Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
I know it is just 1 preseason game but Kelly was way better than Devon Thomas contrary to what we've been hearing....and what happened to Hackett?
He was invisable as well as anyone fighting for the #5 WR spot. |
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
"... but I agree with others... why is Orakpo, a guy who didn't play LB in college our STARTING OLB? I mean, I'm sure eventually he could be good there, but he is a pass-rusher in the mold of a Freeney, Tuck, Ware, not a guy who should be covering Todd Heap!
"
Because who else do we have that can play OLB for us? In other words, Daniels is one hell of a run-stopping defensive end and Orakpo is not. Orakpo is being groomed to play DE, hopefully better than Daniels in passing situations. But right now it makes sense, they couldn't afford to keep Washington and get a DE, so they tried to get both DE and OLB at once. Smart idea. |
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
It was a first pre-season game for sure. I am not too worried, that is why we play these things.
We need to work on our tackling and Fred Davis needs to learn how to hold onto a ball. |
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
Ironic after all we have heard that our Oline played ok and our Dfense stunk.
Even RT Williams did ok |
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
Good question...well, our LB's are suspect, our secondary is not neccessarily as strong as last year with Springs missing...arguably our best player on D when he was playing.
Every new player is always more hype than production, no way all 3 live up to hype...certainly not 2 rookies, Jarmon likely wont play much at all, Orapko will be attacked as a LB...Haynesworth is solid but is not used to who he is playing with, nor the scheme...so if they start out the way they ended the season and end up top 3 or so, they will be top 10 but not top 5. Remember our D was technically top 4 last year in yards, however, they blew several games at the end of the year wearing down and giving up long game sealing drives...I just don't believe they hype until I see it
Our LBs aren't the strongest. Springs was hurt most of last year. He did play good against T.O. tho. We have basically the same linebackers besides Marcus Washington being gone - He also stayed injured. Jarmon and Orakpo are big improvements to the old timers we keep holding on to for the D-line. I agree with the Rak at linebacker statement. they should stick him back on the D-line and stop trying to make him into a hybrid player. I don't think the scheme will stop Haynesworth from being effective. I think that statement is idiotic. If they were top 5 last year why do you think they would drop all the way to 10. Its possible. But we added better D-lineman. To end this its only one preseason game. |

Just saying...
Ah, the good old days of Rosenfels to Thompson. That American Bowl win really catapulted us, didn't it? |
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
oh yeah...fincher really sucked...way worse that Marcus Washington would have done...I say we have a significant need...enough to reconsider signing the guy...not to mention that could free up Orapko to play DE full time
|
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
I don't think Orakpo is ready to play DE full time. He's been losing weight since the draft and wasn't a big run stopper to begin with.
We have to give Orakpo more than one preseason game before the switch to LB can truly be evaluated. |
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
If he can stay healthy all you kids are going to be happily jumping on the
GTripp/WilsoWilso Malcolm Kelly bandwagon. |
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
If people on this board are now going to fret about the defense I really don't know what to say?
|
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
I still can't get over our offense. Why didn't we see any deep passes??? I watched a little bit of NE Phily cause my eyes were hurting watching Balt treat us like a JV team. And I see Philly and NE throwing deep passes right out of the gate. It just pisses me off that we don't even try.

We shall see, we misused other high impact players in the past, including Arrington and Jason Taylor...for some reason it takes our D coaches a long time to put our impact players in a position to maximize their capabilities. Although Blache has said he'd let Haynesworth play more of an attacking freestyle style, I will wait until I see it since that has not been his coaching MO for d-linemen. If he doesn't use him correctly, he wont produce as well as he did in Tenn....even so, he is an upgrade, but the secondary is weaker in my opinion than last yr...and they are overconfident...I just don't buy the skins were a top 4 defense....statistically, maybe...but c'mon, how many non skins fans would put the redskins defense last year in their top 4? I think the reason the skins were top 4 last year is becase their offense was so anemic that we kept giving the other team short fields to score....less possible yards=less yard gained against us...I'd be interested if anyone had info on average field position for opposing team...I'd guess the Skins gave up some pretty good field position. |
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
yeah... Dixon will be practice squad probably... which sucks... who he have to beat out? Golston?
We have Griffin, Haynesworth, Montgomery, Golston at DT... as the 4 that stay?
I think they usually keep 9 or 10 defensive linemen for the final roster. In the past, Lorenzo Alexander has made it into the last couple of spots because he was able to play O-line a couple of years back. If Dixon keeps this up for the next few weeks, they have to find a spot for him. |

He was invisable as well as anyone fighting for the #5 WR spot.
Kelly had 3 catches for 25 yards -- other than the grab over the middle, I'm not sure what was so impressive about him tonight. Hackett didn't get much of a chance because the offense wasn't on the field a whole lot tonight. |

Blache said he wanted to put the young guys "on an island" tonight and see how they handled it. Surprisingly he didn't seem to disappointed in Tryon. He said the guys should learn from this. From what I saw, Tryon has a LOT to learn. |

Tryon got used. It was like the Ravens knew to pick on him too. Play after play they just made him look inferior. On the flip, Byron Westbrook played pretty well. |

Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
Wow. I didn't even get a chance to watch it -- and I'm thoroughly disappointed. (I watched Wheel of Fortune instead.. ugh)
Sure. this is preseason and we're getting everything together. BUT -- this is preseason for the Ravens as well. And they kicked our ass. To be shut out and allow over 500 yards means we sucked from starters right down to the scrubs. Their depth is clearly much better than ours. I'm worried about the defensive effort, but somehow I think we'll work it out. Put Haynesworth and Rogers in there, maybe things get a little better. I sure hope so. What I'm NOT hopeful about is our offense. Getting excited about Kelly and 25 yards is hard to swallow. The O-line is good news, but I'm not as concerned about how good they are -- more about whether they'll stay healthy. Good to hear about BMW, Rhineheart, and backup center who I hear did okay. After all this -- what can we do to make the offense better? Is it just that Zorn sucks at play-calling? Is it JC? Sure it's preseason - but our offense has sucked for years and looks about the same (if not worse). I think this is clearly a bad sign. |
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
BTW it's hilarious that Ladell Betts had his name misspelled as "Bettis" on the back of his jersey. How the hell does that happen? It's not like he's a rookie or fringe player. He's a long time Redskin. Pretty weak.
Reminiscent of the Nationals wearing the "Natinals" jerseys. |

My vote goes to Zorn wanting to save more for the regular season. I know a lot of people are freaking out but preseason really only means so much. I mean in Spurriers first year we were preseason kings and look how much that meant. Last year the Panthers destroyed us on defense and yet we finished 4th overall. Right now a lot of players and coaches are holding back so it's no surprise if teams struggle more then they should. |

Alright here goes. If you want them to remember your name correctly Ladell why don't you stop impressing the coaches in the pre-season. I know I know I know you fooled Vinny or Spurrier when they drafted you about two rounds ahead of any nfl team and then it was Al Saunders who just loved you ever since he saw you in high school and now it's the current coaching staff, but if you want them to remember your name maybe you could do something cool. Like play awesome. |
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
campbell needs more snaps, brady and mcnabb both got more than he did.... and they both took a few shots down the field... 1st preseason game or not, play calling bothered me again from highlights and what im hearing... i was at the eagles game, thier offense looked alot better than ours. w/out westbrook

So Jermoe and Laddal probably have to disucuss a seetlement.
Wow. Ugly from top to bottom.
The only good thing is this should calm the "we're really good" talk. Given the other teams we play this pre-season, we may continue to look very bad. Hopefully it will wake folks up.
Well let us see how the next preseason game goes, if the effort is another doozy of an egg, then I think all of us might have to reevaluate our thoughts of this season. When I got the Sporting News preseason rag and they pegged us at 4-12 I had to laugh, but now the 8-8 the rest of the mags had us at looks too good. Still let's see how the next game or two plays out. If we still suck after preseason game 3 then we are indeed in trouble. |
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
What I saw:
Two bad passes from Soup. Joey T said he was impressed? The first team O-line held up. Surprise! The first team D held up alright. Doughty seemed like he was all over the map when he was in there. He and the CB got burned on the TD. I put that on the CB. He got beat. Why is Blache giving the receivers so much room? Orakpo and Jarmon seem like starters if you ask me. Let Wynn go for a roster spot. Rinehart held his own. Good! We'll be seeing a lot more from Hunter the Punter. He is the best signing of the off season. The third string D got burned up. No sustained drives? No points even in preseason is suspect IMO. Pineapple Jesus looked like a chicken with his head cut off. I will say this again, I don't care if the defense is awesome, you can't leave them on the field for over three quarters of a game and expect a win. Z looked PISSED! Tryon should be cut if he keeps getting burned like that. There's no way that Colt should upseat Collins. Collins looked better than Soup IMO. Did I leave anything out? Oh yeah, that really stank, preseason or not. |
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
Not to be even more a downer, but even the QB pressure we got wasn't that special. The starting LT and G for the Ravens were both out. The Ravens O-line isn't all that special to begin with anyway. Last year they had Willie Anderson, who was like 40, starting last year.
|
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
It is preseason, and lots of key players sitting this one out. But ya still gotta show up.........damn!
The good first..... 1)Orakpo was impressive, really excited about the future. 2)Thomas/Kelly/Davis(outside the fumbles) all looked like they can help if they can get the ball. 3)Jarmon looks like he might end up being a steal. The bad............ 1)Zorn....why not challenge the long pass that was clearly out of bounds? Are there no challenges in preseason or something? 2)The Oline scares me....the last play for Campbell was pathetic. Didnt help that both Rabach and Rhinehart didnt block anyone on that play, and left Cooley & Betts on their own. 3)Did we really spend a 3rd round pick on Kevin Barnes? Hopefully this guy doesnt make it on the field this year! 4)I felt like Colt looked pretty bad. He didnt have alot of time, but when he did he was indecisive, or made bad decisions with the ball. And lastly....maybe Im just "old school" but the jerseys hanging out of the pants really annoys me. My coach always told us "until the shirt is tucked in, your not ready to play". It just looks sloppy and unprofessional, hopefully they clean it up!!! Hail to the Redskins!!! No where to go but up baby!!! :) |
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
So Smoot played some safety in the first half? Why? There's no point in that
I think I figured this out. They want to get Landry in the box (that is why they drafted him) so who better to play center field? |
Re: Redskins vs Ravens Gameday thread
Someone needs to help me out with this. What did Betts do to get the backlash tonight? He didn't drop two first down passes like Hagans.
Did you expect a touchdown on those plays where 2 Ravens are in the backfield when he gets the handoff? At least I can put to bed the he is better than Portis argument.... I remember several heated exchanges over that one. |
