Nice post. I'm kind of past the point in the debate of MS v AH. I say who cares now? AH isn't showing enough to make it a serious question any longer.

If we're very, very lucky we get a player from trade who can actually help us. If we're just lucky AH will stay, play and be significantly better than he's been so far.

The problem is, our defense, especially the d-line, is suspect w/o a dominant AH. My take is this: if Mike and Jim couldn't see ahead to AH struggling so badly - or if they did consider it but do nothing, as we've seen to shore up the situation - my faith in the new regime is greatly diminished. Mike can't win w/o a dominant defense, a part of the game he doesn't seem to understand well. Much was put on Haslett's shoulders because 1) of Mike being the HC and 2) the unit in place was very, very good and just a piece or 2 short of being dominant.

If our defense is noticeably worse than last year we should be very, very concerned.
One of the biggest questions lost in this whole mess (why the 3-4). I really hope it doesn't come to this, but if our defense falters I hope someone makes MS accountable for making this switch. I'm still surprised that with his win-now attitude (instead of rebuilding), he would want to make such a drastic change.

.
The other players you mention took part in 100% of camp...AH did not.If he was the best D-linemen like you said he had been there through the manditory min camps and learned the system.
AH wants to play DE in a 3-4,AH needs to play NT.....there are needs and there are wants,at NT AH would be all pro every year ...doubt about it,it's about what would be best for the team...not Albert.Oh and those were some pretty good bread truck drivers.

One thing interesting to note:
Sheft reported the Titans came to the redskins about trading Albert over Labor Day weekend.

The relationship between Shanny and Albert had been cooling it had seemed then BOOM!
All this blows up!

When you add this info, plus the non stop drama all off season on Shanny and Albert, one has to wonder? Are the Titans putting out stuff to the Press to start these stories and false stories to these Mortensons,Reids and other minute by minute story breakers...?

The reason I ask is because...remember when the Titans accused us of tampering charges with Albert haynesworth when we signed him. One has to wonder if they are really trying to create conflict as much as they can for their own reasons.

This is all speculation of course, but I find these stories really stupid and on par with the "is brett coming back..or not" drama throughout the off season.

Who knows?

If this is the case, MS needs to be less concern about battling wills and egos, and more concerned about the battle in the trenches with our d-line.

i think teams werent willing to part with too much compensation for big al back in april up until now b/c its my suspicion big al would want a new contract with the new team.

so not only would a team have to trade compensation for big al to the skins, they would then have to pay the man. thats not too appealing.

Read Orakpo's quote:
"It's very distracting, but we try not to let it get to us," linebacker Brian Orakpo said Tuesday afternoon. "Because we're tired of talking about it, Albert's tired of talking about it, [Mike] Shanahan's tired of talking about it. Everybody is. We want to move on to be a normal team in this league and not worry about individualism. ...We got a big game coming up and we can't be worrying about No. 92 right now and all this speculation."

"I don't care about all of that. I just worry [about] the Redskins right now. That's all we can worry about. There's always speculation about everything. I could be on the trading block, you never know. That's just the name of the game."
It's NOT that AH is distracting at work, or that MS is giving AH grief. It's the media's incessant dogging of the story. I realize it can eventually hurt the team, but this "distraction" is not about whether AH will play or not play, it's about "Is the media gonna ask about this sh** again :vomit:"

I doubt in the locker room the two men are sitting in MS' office smokin cigars, but I also doubt that they are evading each other, or pleading their case to the team. The attitude, in my belief, is we are here, there's the field, let's get it done. Now, I understand the definition of "let's get it done" is different for both men, but come Sunday night, there is only one definition for both, and that is to Beat the Dallas Cowboys.

I think Orakpo fully understands the situation, he's just speaking the truth and saying what's on his mind, that's all. I guarantee you if these guys are talking publicly about this, what they're saying behind closed doors is far worse.

But to an earlier point, myself and others have stated, this has now become a distraction for this football team. This is not some media hype or fan obsession blown out of proportion and the players haven't completely tuned it out either. The obvious loser in all of this is Albert Haynesworth. His legacy and respect, or lack thereof, around the league will be damaged for good. He can wave Canton bye bye. And by the way he's been playing lately, God, I don't see how this guy makes it to another Pro-Bowl.

But Shanahan shares some of the blame too. Not for Haynesworth's knuckleheadeness, but this tough guy don't tread on me attitude. I swear, we've gone from one extreme to the other with our last two coaches. One guy was so soft he couldn't give a half time speech. The other is such a hard ass players have rules about where to park their cars (or least that's the word on the street). Success is somewhere in the middle and Shanny, for all of his success in the past, has done a miserable job managing one prima dona. I wish we would cut the guy already.

Re: Redskins and Titans talking trade again on Albert Haynesworth

I'm on record as saying that AH is selfish. I believe that he is. I don't think that he's much of a teammate and I doubt that he helps other players on the team to develop their skills. He's hard-headed, he defies authority figures, and he's determined to do things his way as much as possible.

But then there is Game Day. In games that count, he is a true badass. He is practically immovable on short yardage plays. What he does for our defense on Third Down and in the Red Zone cannot be replaced. He also demands double teams, collapses the pocket on pass plays and frees up our speed rushers to pressure the QB.

For me, the key to the entire soap opera between AH and Shanahan is this: I believe that AH will play hard an effectively in the real games. He has too much personal pride to not do so. I think it is time for Shanahan to accept that AH is a special player whose peculiarities need to be tolerated to some extent. I don't think that allowing AH some special privileges will adversely affect the attitudes of the other players as long as they see AH dominating on Sundays. Special treatment for special players is part of the culture of professional athletics (see Brett Farve).

Add to that the extremely remote possibilities that the Redskins could ever negotiate equivalent compensation in a trade for him or get back any of the sunk cost they have in him and it becomes a no-brainer for me. Shanahan should back off of AH a little, tell his minions to STFU about him, end all trade talk, tell Albert that he will not be traded, put him in the starting lineup, and then send the man out on a mission to destroy the Cowboys offense.

I like Shanahan's "tough-guy, don't tread on me" attitude. At first I wasn't sure how to feel about him -- if we won, then I'd like him -- but now I know. Wins or not, Shanahan is the real deal. He's building a team, and there is absolutely no place for compromise. You submit, and fall in line, and you never defy the coach. That's good leadership, in my opinion. People usually respond well to people who know what they want. Shanahan knows what he wants, and he doesn't waver.

This is exactly right. I was one of the folks that was not happy about the change to 3-4. I like 4-3 better.

We made the move to increase saks, so we better get more sacks soon or else this move will be a waste. So far this preseason we have not seen an increase in sacks. I am hoping Hasslett is just hiding his bread and butter plays for Dallas.
I am still concerned about Andre Carter, he still looks like he is constantly behind the play. His mental part of the game is not there yet. I am hoping he will catch up and get comfortable.

A solid/simple ending to this drama would be for AH to play lights out on whatever number of snaps he gets, MS in the post game presser to say AH showed tonight why we paid him that 21Mill in the first place, and Haslett on Monday to put him in the starting lineup. That would make me nearly as happy as Ace's 41 point prediction coming true (and I think my scenario has a far better chance of happening)

Much to Shanahan's delight, the Redskins produced eight turnovers in the first three preseason games, generally considered the most important games for evaluating players and choosing the opening 53-man roster.

"We had eight in [the first] three games," Shanahan said. "If you did that for the season it'd be 42, 421/2. I think Green Bay led the NFL last year with 40, so you feel pretty good."

Hall became the first Redskins player with two interceptions in the preseason since safety Sean Taylor had three before the 2004 season.

"And the thing is we haven't run any of Has's defenses," Hall said. "We've just been out there playing vanilla, not trying to show nothing. Just wait 'til we start the season and start running all this stuff we've been working on from the start. It'll be on then. It's scary."

Re: Redskins and Titans talking trade again on Albert Haynesworth

Fat Albert should be hanging out Lorenzo and learning how to be a professional!!

Lorenzo Alexander learning yet another position

Is there any limit to Lorenzo Alexander's versatility?

It seems the Redskins are determined to find out after recently requesting that the outside linebacker learn to play the inside backer positions just in case he is needed in an emergency situation.

Of course, Alexander complied. He is studying the playbook to learn the assignments of starting inside linebackers London Fletcher and Rocky McIntosh, and backup H.B. Blades.

"Everything starts out as an emergency-type thing," Alexander said. "I'm learning the middle linebacker, and hopefully I'll be able to fill in for guys just in case, God forbid, if Rocky or London or H.B. went down with an injury. If they needed somebody to play there in the game, I'd be able to step in and just fill another role on the team."

If you're scoring at home, Alexander has lined up at outside linebacker, defensive tackle, defensive end, guard, tight end and fullback. He also fills roles on special teams.

He has made a smooth transition to outside linebacker from his former primary position along the defensive line. Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett raves about Alexander, who will back up Andre Carter, a converted defensive end, against the Dallas Cowboys in the season opener Sunday night. Alexander is expected to play primarily on third downs.

With this being Dallas Week and Alexander only starting to learn the inside positions, "I'm not going to get [practice] reps at it at all," he said. "I mean, London, Rocky ... they're going to give the reps to guys who are preparing to play. They're not going to prepare for an emergency.

"I try to take my reps when we do practice-squad things. I don't know it quite all the way but I know certain defenses. I can't tell you I know the whole playbook yet - but I plan to learn the whole playbook. I want to be versatile. That's been my M.O. since I've been here."

So, are all those positions a little overwhelming at times? "You know where I went to school, so it's never too much," said Alexander, a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. "I'm a smart guy. I can handle it."

"It's not a big thing. You learn how to make things simple, so you can group things together. You hear one call, it might be the same thing for three, four, five different calls. You just group 'em together and it's all the same. That's how I kind of learn and keep it all together."

Unfortunately, there are 3 other starting LB's on our team....none of which can both pass rush AND cover....even Orakpo is still learning that.

Our line is questionable with or without Haynesworth in a 3-4.
In a 4-3 we'd probably have Orakpo and Carter on the end and Haynesworth happy at DT with some other fat guy at the other....that is 3 of 4 very high quality guys playing natural positions on the line vs....1 of 3....Carriker....and we don't even know if he is any better than average.

This 3-4 shift is by far the riskiest move of the offseason, and it has shown 1 thing...complete inablility to stop the run.

For all you that think we are going to the playoffs...keep a close eye on the decline of our abilty to stop the run due to the scheme shift...watch it closely.

I think you make some good points here--I too am worried that this year's D does not have the personnel to run the 3-4. And, yes, the run D will suffer because of it. I think we'll be addressing this in the next off season in a big way--these things take time.

But I do hope there will be some upside, even this year. For one, we should be better against the pass, both in pass D and, much more importantly, pressure. Also, and here is the big hope, we'll get more TOs. If that happens, it covers up a multitude of weaknesses. So far in the pre-season, we've seen a bit of that. Let's hope it translates into the regular season.

In any event, it's going to take some time on both sides of the ball to get Shanny's system up and running. We need that thing that no skins fan (myself included) seems to have: patience.

The turnovers numbers are a good point, but it has to be tempered with the fact that it is typical there are more turnovers in preseason because you have a ton of backups and wannabe's playing trying like hell to make the roster and they take more chances and are more reckless/careless with the ball.

I see you highlighted the part about our defense playing vanilla schemes in preseason. Yeah, that is what I was referring too.

Re: Redskins and Titans talking trade again on Albert Haynesworth

Who knows?
Got this text this morning around 10:25am Redskinsblog @ LarryWeisman GM Bruce Allen in phone call to WTOP radio denied shopping DT AH rumors have been abundant.
After reading everyone's opinion I have come to my own conclusion. What's going to happen is going to happen. No one really knows what that may be until it actually happens. I think we would be much better served talking about Dallas and comparing our two teams, not comparing our own players and staff. I for one am very excited about Sunday night and I hope be beat the pants off of the Cowboys. :spank: I'm starting a grass roots movement. Let's lock this thread and EVERYONE will go streaking through the quad to the gymnasium. And then to the thread on Dallas. Who's with me? :food-smil
We're going STREAKING! TANK! TANK! TANK! TANK! LMAO

Shanahan: Albert Haynesworth had "a great practice." Dismisses "rumor and speculation" about trade talk. 10 minutes ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®

So how is Shanny or AH or BA doing anything to promote this non-issue media created frenzy? Please only say that it is through leaks if you KNOW(smoot imma lookin at you) that skins sources were purposely leaking the trade info. I really am coming to discount JReid as any type of legit source when it comes to the skins, seems like he has taken up where JLC left off.
