Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Dolphins)
My only qualm with this is some of the options you think are better, may not have been better on our squad. You can say they were better, but there is no way to really know. Had he brought in those other options and it not panned out (aka..mcnabb) would you have praised him for it? Probably not.
It is obvious that last year, McNabb was Plan A, Rex was Plan B (back up), and Beck was Plan C (3rd stringer). After a wasted year because of the McNabb mistake, MS decided that he was going to stick with Plans B & C. While a lot of the decisions made over the past two years have been good, it is hard to believe that this is the best Shanahan could come up in two years at the QB position. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Dolphins)
I don't see how the playing field for MS is more difficult than what Gibbs walked into after Spurrier. Gibbs made the playoffs in 2 of 4 years. Gibbs' teams rose to the occassion late in the season with 4 & 5 game win streaks to make those playoff runs.
Gibbs' big mistakes during his tenure were relying too much on personnel decisons from Al Saunders (ARE) and Greg Williams (Arch) and that he over-valued Campbell. But Gibbs did a HoF job turning the franchise around from where it was. I'll always wonder what could've been if the ST tragedy hadn't happened.
Good post. I think Shanahan made things more difficult for himself when he took over the team. However, I do agree with SS33 that it wasn't nearly as difficult as it was for Gibbs when he took over for Spurrier. |
Well, I do believe if they are top 5 and if someone other than the Colts have the 1st pick we'll make a big push for Luck.
I've heard they're not interested in Barkley, but I can't see why not
I haven't watched him other than the ND game, but I wasn't impressed either. That would be an ideal for offense but I don't think we are at the position where we can afford to trade away picks because we need picks to draft CB, WR, and maybe a couple of O-linemen for depth |

1) You can't force Free Agents to Washington so stop with the Vince Young(and others) talk. 2) Who's to say Hasslebeck, Bulger, Jackson or any other crappy QB you all manage to name would do any better than Rex or Beck? 3) Speaking of Hasslebeck, why would you sign a 36 year old QB to a 3 year contract worth about 8 mil per season with no rookie in the stable? Like I've said before, you can't turn shit into sugar so stop acting like Shanny had all these great options at the QB spot. He didn't. Had he brought in any of those guys you all mentioned and they played shitty, you'd be bitching about that too. Yes we have god awful talent at the QB spot right now, but lets see the pieces we have and are building on. We aren't going to be competitive until about 2013 to be honest. I'm going to chalk up 2012 as a learning curve for whatever rookie QB we bring in.
You are missing the point by a lot. The argument that the Redskins were handcuffed to Rex Grossman and John Beck this season must die. It must die right now. It's an irrational, apologetic argument. Look around. We certainly could have kept three QBs on the active roster. One of the biggest failures of the 2010 season was that the Redskins didn't go into the year with a long-term development option at QB, and ended up wasting the last three games of the season. At least, once you acquired McNabb, those roster spots seem frivolous. But he's a guy that gets hurt all the time, it certainly would have seemed prudent to bring in a long term option with potential to play if when the season is lost. That's what rebuilding is. But to enter 2011 with the same quarterback situation minus McNabb isn't rational. It was pure arrogance. You must understand: the downside to the failure of those two quarterbacks was enormous. It means a totally wasted season on offense. But the risk of failure seemed highly likely. The argument that the Redskins were obligated to already have their long-term franchise QB by now is a strawman. No one is saying the Redskins are worse off long term because they don't have their quarterback right now. They are worse off because the last two seasons would appear to be a total waste of my time and of your time. And so rationally, a new direction would seem to be beneficial for the franchise. I think your anger is misdirected here. The people that want to hold Shanahan accountable have not run the Redskins into the ground. Mike Shanahan has. |

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Dolphins)
Your right but a ton of other teams passed on them and we took them. I wonder why? Your right I think it was their grading system.
Players "fall" based on how much folks expect them to actually produce. For example, Haynesworth could produce like a perennial Pro-Bowler. But we only got a 5th rounder from the Pats because there was a legit chance that he might very well do nothing. Teams did not want to risk a 3rd rounder for absolutely nothing. Similarly, that's why Thomas and Kelly "fell" to us. Thomas for being lacking in knowledge. Kelly due to his injury risk.
Devin Thomas was a one year wonder in college. Thus, he had little knowledge of what WRs do at the pro level. But he was physically gifted. He was not expected to be an immediate impact guy because of this. But they thought he could pick up the game in a couple years. It obviously never happened. Malcolm Kelly was a huge injury risk. But a workout with JC put him on their wanted radar because of chemistry. He also had size and hands and was more NFL-ready. Essentially, it seems they(or just Vinny) ignored the red flags and probably believed the worst couldn't happen. Well, the worst did happen, and we know the results. This is why I do not believe overemphasizing need is good strategy. It is factor in breaking a tie between two similarly good prospects. BUT there is a big temptation to overlook flaws just so filling the need is accomplished. If there are huge red flags, folks ought to have had the balls to "let them go" and pick a quality prospect elsewhere, even at a position of non-need like RB(Forte or Rice were there). Being able to let a good player walk and replace him seamlessly is a good thing in its own right: it means you addressed a need before it became one. Of course, there is a subjective element in grading prospects. Some flaws aren't really big flaws at all, while others are huge. Trent Williams was had the more "flawed" profile than Okung, but it seems that under Shanahan, his question marks haven't popped up much during his time here. What was unsure about Trent to us was apparently not a big deal for Mike Shanahan. |

I'm actually writing about the sustainability of the Broncos offense right now and why I think Fox doesn't really understand why what he and Mike McCoy are running on offense is working. I don't think he understands why this offense is fundamentally more sustainable than the wildcat. But I offer this comparison: Tim Tebow NFL Football Statistics - Pro-Football-Reference.com Michael Vick NFL Football Statistics - Pro-Football-Reference.com That's the first 732 action plays of Michael Vick's NFL career against Tebow's career to date. It's, uh, similar. Both are getting about 7 yards per attempt early on in their career on runs to boot. I don't think Tebow can run this offense deep into his career. But he's under contract through his age 27 season, and there's no reason to believe the Broncos can't just run a variation of what they are doing now every year, winning 9-10 games a season in the process. It makes Tebow's shelf life in this league kind of short, but there's a lot of quarterbacks who were believed in by the scouts who would have killed to have 3.5 successful seasons in their pro careers. |

*sighs* The year before, Shanny tried to move up from #4 to the #1 spot to grab Bradford, but the Rams decided to hold onto the pick. Sometimes you guys make it sound like trading is so easy that a caveman can do it. It takes two teams to make a trade happen and the other team may not want to do business. Also, if you like the guy (QB), but aren't willing to sacrifice multiple picks just to move up then you stay put. That would mean no Ryan Kerrigan and no Hankerson and probably a couple other guys. I'm willing to bet you that many of those teams above Tennessee didn't want to move down. Cleveland was the only one and they got a kings ransom and then some for that pick. Let's talk about the great picks we did have. You realize this has been one of the best drafts the Redskins has have, and yet we are still unhappy because we didn't reach for a QB. 41 tackles, 5 sacks, 1 Int, 1 TD, 4 FF........our defense needed the help and Kerrigan was the smart and best choice the coaching staff could have made. |

Neither of them would be listed in the top 20 players at that position in the NFL. The only "bang up job" being done here is when the center fires out and bangs his head into the opponent's defensive tackle. The Skins need more than "quality depth at guard". If they actually had two top-shelf offensive guards, they could run the ball straight ahead much more effectively than they do. In fact, the Skins straight-ahead running attack is pretty bleak. Jamaal Brown had a Pro Bowl season and then got hurt. His Pro Bowl days are over; when healthy he is an adequate offensive tackle - - not "great", not "a stud", not "one of the best in the league" but adequate. |

You make some good points about the players they did get and I am a Shanny/Allen supporter...I like the general direction of the team but I think they should have been more aggressive about getting a young Qb the past 2 years. And as much as i like some of their draft picks I would have traded all of them to have Bradford and at least some of them for locker. It's not the 80's anymore...the teams that win in this league are the teams with the top QB's and we are not even in the game yet... |

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Dolphins)
Regarding the posts of playcalling :
Kyle Shannahan ran a very potent attack in Houston, so I dont believe the issue is playcalling. The issue is the horses he has running the plays. Now, some may say he'd curtail his calls to what they do best. Well, find something this group does best is the questions i pose. Regarding the Torain is worthless comments He was injured in training camp, all along coming in as the unquestioned #1 back based on his performance last year. All of the sudden he's at #3 on the depth chart. Now he plays a game, sits a game, plays a game... Its hard for a running back, especially in this system to gain any sort of rhythm. I have seen torain run, and he runs quite well in this system. He is young and I would hate to give up on him. I guess the question is Hightower, Helu, Torain.. which two do you keep? Rex - Not alot you can say.. He obviously isnt' our future, but he is our present. He made some good throws and I thought overall our offense looked better than it had the previous 3 games. THe interceptions...1st one Hankerson fell down. the 2nd one, I keep playing it back in my brain, and I just keep seeing the receiver running behind the LB on that play. Why he didn't come infront of him I dont know. Either way, a pass that shouldn't have been thrown. I think Rex is definitely pressing in this game. We have to get the run game working. If it works, Rex becomes more effective with deep balls, and stretch roll outs, boots and so on. Defensively - I am baffled. Why our corners consistantly play so far off the receivers every damn down. Hall just about gives up 5 and 10 yard completions like nothing. Why when we blitz are our corners not on the line of scrimmage pressing the receivers?? That freaking kills me. At this point, we have nothing to lose, I would be extremely aggressive on the Defensive side of the ball, try to create turnovers because our offense is terrible at getting points on the board. |
And sometimes that price is astronomically high. If a team is in absolute love with a top 5 prospect, we're talking about maybe 1 and a half Mike Ditka draft trades.
Of course...and for Bradford I would have paid that price. I said it then and i still think it now. And the way Shanny talked about Bradford after the draft was over confirmed it. If they thought he was their guy then there is no price to high IMO. Locker I wanted but not at a "Ditka" type price. |

If his moves delays the rebuild for too long and thus results in sucking, then the fans will want his head or the owner won't renew his contract. If we traded 3 entire drafts for Bradford, our roster would have been ruined to the point where the Rams are now, and Sam has not made miracles out of such a roster.
The Rams could have thought the same thing, except the other way around. They have a Franchise QB right in their lap. In order to compensate, three, four, maybe even five drafts would be needed. Imagine if the 'Skins somehow had the #1 pick for Luck or Bradford. If some team wanted to give you 5 full drafts for that QB, would you take it? |

Sports From the link: It's beautiful. How many NFL coaches have lost their jobs through the years because they have a specific way of doing things, and they will not deviate from that way, no matter what the talent around them dictates? Fox has not only been flexible, he's taken it to an absolute extreme. It's such a massive change of pace from the traditional copycat nature of the NFL that it almost makes me want to root for Fox and Tebow. The reality for John Fox, though, is that he doesn't have a Brady, Brees or Rodgers. He has what he has, and he's embracing it full force. That's a pretty good way to go about things.
I read this same article i guess 2 days ago and thought about posting it somewhere but couldnt think of what thread it fit best in. Im really glad you posted it and i completely agree that being flexible is a pretty good way to go about things. Obviously you design your team and get players you think are best suited to fit within those parameters, but when you are unable to get everything you want or are just dealing with injuries like every other team you have to be flexible. The NFL is way to dynamic for a coach not to be. The NFL is a very unique sport in that it’s the ultimate team sport, which makes it the ultimate coach’s sport. While the nfl has about the same amount of teams as other major sports it requires many more athletes then every other sport and almost every single starter only does one thing and has only done that one thing since college. It also a complicated sport to learn and doesn’t have as many “farm systems”, if any, compared to other major sports and the US is really the only country that produces athletes needed for the sport. Careers are also shorter partly because pro players start playing later but also because injuries are the norm and expected at every position. There are also barely any games compared to others sports, which makes every game a must win. And there’s a salary cap and floor so you cant just buy a team. The point is the only way a coach can have every player he wants for every position executing each assignment while fighting with an opposing player attempting to do the opposite is by dreaming. Every once in while it may happen and you take advantage of those situation because you know that its not gonna last for long. The rest of the time you take advantage of what you got and call plays with more square holes and less round ones. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Redskins vs. Dolphins)
Also a big kudos to Fox. I never thought he was going to do the things it would take to make Tebow successful. I thought he was going to stick Tebow in, not make any adjustments, and say there I told you he wouldn’t work out. Instead he swallowed his pride and did things to take advantage of Tebow's unconventional qb skills

IMO there is no price to high for 10-15 years of great QB play. If you tell me Luck will play as well as Brady or Manning for his entire career then I will pay almost anything. I like the general direction of the team but we will NEVER see any real progress until we get a QB... |

And that's why Shanahan couldn't get Bradford. It's not that he didn't try. It's just that the Rams weren't budging one damn since they needed a franchise QB as well. You can try to pay the seller all you want, but if the seller isn't selling his goods, the transaction isn't happening. |
