1st REDSKINS DRAFT NEWS OF THE SEASON:

Your first draft nugget/news about the redskins is that we talked for a very long period of time to Lane Johnson LT out of Oklahoma, according to Tony Pauline SI.com draft expert.

Lane Johnson is a very athletic tackle who is a former TE. He did very well against Demontre Moore of Texas A&M who is considered to be a top 10 pick. Could he be a replacement on the left to move Trent to RT? Or is he a RT? The point is Polumbus, judging by our draft scouts high interest in the OLineman at the senior bowl [and Lane Johnson], doesn't look like he'll be starting here next year (no big shocker)
Why is god's name would we move TW?
Well, if this tackle from OU who started his whole career at LT and is considered to be a great LT prospect (and not much of a mean streak for RT supposedly), I thought maybe since Trent played more RT in college, and we could get potentially 2 great tackles, move them where their most comfortable. Just a possibility. I agree that Trent should stay put as the dominant LT that he is.

If he were a LT of TW's caliber, we wouldn't have a chance in getting him late in the 2nd.

Untapped potential and possible move up in the draft. Right now he's viewed as a 2nd rounder. But scouts have been raving about him since practice this week so he could be a first rounder or top 15 by the end of the week.

That'd be a historic rise...and generally those types of late-risers don't end up being very good.

Interesting look at the draft, like Jeremy Shockey said you don't want any lawyers and doctors on the field with you.
I fell in love with this......
6th - Jake Stoneburner: TE 6' 5" 245 Ohio St. - Suspended from team during the summer after being arrested and cited for public urination. Who doesn't love a guy who pees in public? Aside from his "tiny" mishap with the law, Stonburner is a player who can cause mismatch problems for safeties and linebackers with his speed and athleticism.
Why do I think of Chris Cooley here. lol. Doing stupid outragious stuff. or simply when you gotta pee you gotta pee. lol.

Thought this was funny also.....
5th - Tyrann Mathieu: CB 5' 9" 178 Formerly of LSU - The talented Mathieu was kicked out of LSU for repeated drug violations. Hey, Mathieu likes to smoke him some weed, but so do a few other Redskins. Maybe Tyrann can get high off of the thrill of being an NFL player instead, and turn his life around..............god knows we could use him in our secondary.
Amerson scares me too but more so in the fact of if we keep him at CB. He went from 13 picks last year and all American to being beat deep quiet a few times this year. He looks stiff and out of place this year. Now him at FS would be good but I don't want to experiment with that, let another team try it out.

Re: 2013 NFL Draft Prospects

I think Johnathan Cyprien one of the most physically gifted S in this draft. His range is astounding and he plays full speed every down. He has power that he uses very well with shedding blocks and driving through the ball carrier. I see Brian Dawkins/Gholston. I believe he can start day 1 too. Him and DJ Swearinger in the same backfield would be a dream. Both can cover, both flies around, both are playmakers, and both drops the boom on WRs. If we can get a CB in FA and maybe RT those 2 would be 2 of the top 3 of our picks.

I have watched Mr. Swearinger since he first got to South Carolina. I like him, he is a very rangy FS who plays physical, good tackler, excellent hitter, above average ball skills, but he can be reckless and sometimes gets lost in coverage but I would like him as well.

I'm a believer that building a team requires FA, the draft, and a few smart trades. But this season I think it's all about the draft for the Skins. That's because there is a very thin crop of FA's, IMO, we don't have the draft picks to make trades (there are few player-for-player trades in the NFL these days), and (this is the good news) this year's draft is deep in the positions where we have the greatest perceived needs.

This draft looks to be deep at safety and CB and deep enough for our purposes at OT.

At safety there are numerous players who could help us soon: Kenny Vaccaro, TJ McDonald, Phillip Thomas, Duke Williams, Rambo Bacarri, DJ Swearinger, David Amerson and more. We'll get a good safety in this draft, maybe even two good safeties. Who wouldn't want a guy named Duke or a guy named Rambo at safety?

There are also a number of good prospects at CB: Desmond Trufant, Jordan Poyer, Robert Alford, Jonathan Cyprien, and others. We have a chance of getting a good CB, as well.

At OT, there are some decent prospects who we might be able to draft after Eric Fisher and Lane Johnson are gone: Xavier Nixon, Oday Aboushi, David Quessenberry, Kyle Long, and possibly others.

I think people get this cap penalty think to far. We will be able to make moves in FA. Reconstructing and cutting players can get us 2 upgrade starters in FA. Which ones I don't know. I have faith Bruce can work out ways to get 2 good players here. Especially when this FA is so deep of defensive backs. We could get a Derek Cox, Sean Smith, or Kenaan Lewis CB and Kenny Phillips, Mundy, or Patrick Chung S. Those are upgrades I can see Bruce getting.

30gut 01-26-2013 02:21 PM

My 2 cents on the SAF class

Reid-FS-(reminds me of LaRon Landry but more fluid movement)
McDonald-FS-(good height, solid tackler, good range, a little stiff)
Swearinger-FS/SS-(solid all around S that played CB/SS/FS solid player)
Elam-SS/FS-(good movement, aggression, good tackler, smallish)
Phillip Thomas-(Fresno)-SS/FS (good size/speed, good production, fluid movement, question his angles/tackling)
Vaccaro-SS/FS-(great size/speed, question his angles/tackling)
Rashard Hall-FS (solid FS, good movement, did well at Shrine game, 40 time is gonna be big for him)
Duke Williams-FS (tough small school prospect with CB speed)
Tony Jefferson FS (good all around FS/NB reminds of a less physical Elam, also smallish)
Jonathan Crypein SS (physical S, reminds me of a young Meriweather)
Rambo-FS (discipline? I really like the kid but he scares me as a week 1 FS maybe he starts off at SS and as he learns the game transitions to Free)
Zeke Motta-FS/SS-(good size/speed not many cut-ups, did well at Shrine game)
JJ Wilcox- (only 1 year as S converted WR)
Robert Lester FS/SS-(steady if unspectacular FS from a pro-style program, not very aggresive/explosive on film)
Cody Davis-FS-(love this kid on film, good movement, in position, looks smallish though)
Shamarko Thomas-SS/FS (great speed 4.4 or below, really like this kid but he's short 5'9, played more like a CB then SAF)
Shawn Williams-SS-(good tackler, steady)

My rankings aren't based on where I think they'll go but on my view of their skillset with a focus on playing FS over SS

My point is that I don't see any reason to pay more money for pedestrian FA players when we can draft players who will cost less and might develop into outstanding players. In view of the probability that we'll get back Brandon Meriweather and Tanard Jackson, none of the players you listed impresses me enough to want to see the Skins use up salary cap dollars on one of them.

I think the list of safety prospects, with comments, that 30Gut provided reinforces my belief that we should be able to draft one or two solid players at that position. I have confidence that the Skins front office will do a great job of identifying the right ones.
