A couple of bargain free agents that I like are:
Andrew Quarless TE, Green Bay Arthur Jones DE, Baltimore Eric Winston OT, Arizona
Andrew Quarless would be a nice addition, seeing as how we no have reliable weapons at TE. If we signed him, we could move on from Davis and Paulsen and/or Paul. Reed and Quarless would be a great TE set. And I agree with CRedskinsRule...Winston needs to be removed from consideration. |
The name Eric Winston needs to be banned from this site!
He's been named so many times in the offseason, and yet he has yet to find a team that thinks enough of him to keep him. I don't know how good he can be, but I think he comes here, he just adds his name to the Adam Archuletta hall of shame (even though we certainly would not overpay him like AA)
Only reason I put him is because I knew he would come up somewhere so I just beat it to the punch. |

Sign Kenny Britt, 1 year prove himself deal. Great player when he is focused.

I am not saying don't do this, but I wouldn't do it as our only WR addition because we need a legit #2 and he would still be a question mark. We already have question marks with the folks we already have on the roster not named Garcon. Britt would have to come relatively cheap for me to be enthusiastic about this, expecially given the number of FA WRs and the depth in that position in the draft (not that we have picks). |

When I see comments like this I wonder, how many draft picks do you think we have in the upcoming draft? |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
None -- in fact, we probably owe picks to a few teams still. In all seriousness, my point here is that no need to overpay for Britt who is an uncertainty when we can think about either something more of a sure bet in FA or take a flyer on a later draft pick.
|
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
who's overpaying for britt? when did he become a big name?
i'd prefer him to another wasted 2nd round pick. WRs and the draft aren't the best match in the world. |

Up until a while ago I had the same mind set. But since we need so many new starters and so many other things that are recently fuxxored about this team I'll take any solid player thats healthy and isn't a screw up. Maybe in two years we'll have the luxury of only signing younger guys. |

If a player is over 27, can play at a high level and is willing to sign a reasonable contract, I am ok with it. All of our Superbowl teams were built with a mix of veterans and youth. Each year there is always a player or two in FA or available by trade that is a huge bargain because a teams FO deems a player is too old, but yet he can still play at a high level. Two years ago 49ers got Anquan Boldin for a 6th round pick. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
I wouldn't sign anyone over 27.
I'll adopt and amend this to I wouldn't sign anyone over 27 to more than a two year deal. There are some players that potentially will be out there (Shaun Phillips, Jason Hatcher to name a couple) that are over 27 but could come in and make an impact the next couple of years. Where we run into danger is giving older players 4, 5 or 6 year contracts. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Roman Harper was bad last year. I'd sign guys over 27 to small deals rather than pay an exuberant amount to young guys who may have excelled in a system. It depends on a lot of things, but I wouldn't limit our selfs. An example would be, I wouldn't pay a 30 million deal to Riley but I rather bring in the Darryl smith on a 2 year 10 million deal.
|
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Unless you're ready to win now there's no real sense in signing older players.
When you're trying to build that's the time to focus on youth, so in 2-3 years those guys you sign now are in their prime. Then you go ahead and add the older vets that have a smaller window to contribute. Just my 2 cents on it. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
I pretty much agree with Matty. The best values in FA are the younger ones, as they offer you their prime years. An older player as a one-year stopgap is fine but if you are signing someone as a building block, get 'em young.

Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
I think the team needs some help, but I think we actually can win now in this division. We won the division the year before, why not?

Sure they could win the division and do another one and done in the playoffs. I don't think they're close to being a serious SB contender. That's why I'd focus on the draft and stay away from the older vets in FA. |

I'd rather try and build something rather then go with guys that will be here a year or two. Let's try and have a contender for several years. Seattle is going to be around for a long time with a good young core of guys. Hopefully we can do the same thing. |

I 50% agree with you, as we saw what we were doing to the eventual SB champs with a 70% Griffin, it depends on how our defense improves and the growth of RGIII, Alfred, Garcon, and Jordan Reed on offense, if they can click and if our defense can improve. If that happens I feel we can be a contender. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Also, it remains to be seen if David Amerson, Richard Crawford, Phillip Thomas, and Bacarri Rambo can develop into serious contributors. I felt Crawford was gonna turn into a very good slot CB before he got hurt last year, and this is basically Thomas's rookie season coming up.

I think there's no reason that Amerson can't be a solid #2 at the minimum. We'll have to see how Crawford comes back from his injury, he had potential as well. Rambo's going to need to learn to tackle better and take better routes to the ball to be anything other than a depth player. Thomas - ??? |

Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
i think age is a fluid and relative consideration. when we signed fletcher he was on the wrong side of 30 but his intangibles made him a smart FA addition.
age doesnt automatically scare me off. its certainly a consideration given our current state but if we can add a good vet here and there, im all for it. i think nowadays, you have to view every year as your year and opportunity. maybe not the cleveland browns or raiders but i see us as a much more complete team than them. |

I actually believe the reports from players that not only did Philbin know, but actually asked the OL to toughen up Martin. And I would still rather have Incognito over Martin (Dont want either one tbh but if I had to choose one, its going to be Incognito). What happens when someone lines up over Martin and calls him a crybaby, which is going to happen if he keeps playing. Is he going to walk off the field citing abuse? Is he going to stop trying claiming he felt depressed? I also dont see how someone who has never dealt with this stuff can give an honest assessment. If Wells did a report on every team, they would all say that abuse and bullying are present, as hazing is commonplace in the NFL. I doubt Wells spends much time with friends who call him names while he calls them names back. My friends and I are pretty harsh to each other, im sure Wells would claim that we bullied each other (why I have trouble believing much about this report) when we actually have each others back when needed. |
Orakpo, nuff said.
Orakpo is not more valuable than Riley. Orakpo plays on side of the field and does it poorly. He has no ability to play in pass coverage and is a one trick pony as a pass rusher. He invites offenses to run under his up-field pass rush and does not contain. Please explain why he's better than Riley? If the Skins resign Orakpo it better be at a bargain price. Jackson/Jenkins can replace him and his numbers for less than 4 mil. per year. Value! Value! Value! |

I don't think Riley or Orakpo are going anywhere. I think we will sign one of the "big name" DBs, whether it be Byrd, Ward, Verner, or Talib.

Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Basically, my post is factual.
Your post IS factual. It is great to hear from someone that understands how to play LB. The majority of others only measure LB's by sacks, regardless of how bad a LB does not comply with his other positional responsibilities. Setting an edge against the run, containment, pass coverage, interceptions are just as important as sacks. What good is a sack or 10 if you are not holding your position down. Orakpo is a one trick pony IMO (pass rush and only one pass rush move) and played well at the end of last season because he is playing for a contract. He has missed a TON of time due to injury and he got hurt again last season. He is not worth a big salary cap hit. We can do better. I am a former LB and watching Orakpo play is frustrating to watch because he has holes in his game. He is selfish. He goes for the sack rather than reading a play. Orakpo is not a good LB, he is a small DE playing LB. He does not have the mental ability to play LB. The only argument GTripp has is pass rush and that is it. As Seattle and SF (the two best teams in the by far) proved, is as much as the powers that be want the NFL to be a passing league, come playoffs and Superbowl, run the ball/be balanced and play lights out defense and you will win. Sacks and passing stats are the sexy stats and they sell newspapers, but running the ball and defense wins championships. Given Dan Snyder's reputation as an NFL owner, the last thing we need to do is over pay for a player that has holes in his game. If we can Orakpo for cheap, great, keep him. Orakpo will not come for cheap. Let him walk. |
