Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News

The "Fangio can't have Donatell b/c he has to keep Morris" may or may not be true - we'll never know. So much information being thrown around, it's hard to say.

In the twitterverse, by beat reporters and others (they follow him, he follows them, it's a swirling vial of incestuous information and innuendo), Jsteelz is generally considered a reliable and connected source - he's not always right but he seems to be acknowledged by all as being in the know.

In this case, however, he is simply retweeting the info provided by Chicago beat writer Michael Wright (a former Washington beat writer) who, in turn, says an unnamed coach told him (no indication if it is a Washington or Chicago coach). Keim states that, in conversations between Washington assistant coaches (implying his source is a current assistant not named Morris), that M. Wright's info is incorrect and no one has been told they will be on the new staff.

Also, the story doesn't quite make sense, they brought Donatell in for an interview for the DC position.

Again, lots of info out there, it's going to play out as it will. Either RM is back or he's not (he was HC in T-Bay and hired Barry as LB coach after his 0-16 stint in Detroit). Either way, if Barry sucks, Gruden's gone and we reset (again) in 2016.

I am hoping: (1) Barry is an excellent DC waiting to happen; (2) Gruden is shaking out the Shanny leftovers and building a staff and team with which he can win; and (3) RGIII comes back strong and is the franchise QB we saw flashes of early in his career.

Right now. Just not having real high expectations that all or any of the three occur.

If Morris ends up moving on I guess we'll know for sure.

They did let him interview with the Giants, so how desperate are they to keep him really?

Yeah but that was for a DC position, a step up from his current role. I don't think they can even stop that, isn't it against the rules (even if they're unwritten) to prevent someone from interviewing for a promotion?

Looks like Barry is purging the old defensive staff:

ESPN 980 @ESPNRadio980 · 55m 55 minutes ago
Three sources have either told or confirmed to @ESPNRadio980 that #Redskins DL Coach Jacob Burney (hired in 2010) will not be coming back.

As the Redskins begin to reshape the coaching staff on defense, league sources have told me Raheem Morris is talking with other teams.

1) I don't believe, never believed, they were truly close to getting Fangio nor that either side really wanted anything to happen

2) Raheem has since the day he arrived been much more than a position coach, he's very influential on the staff. Was he calling the defense? I can't say that for sure

3) Raheem interviewing with other teams doesn't mean the Redskins don't like him

4) Jsteelz has been very very wrong on things before, but who hasn't? He's well connected. He and I bounce information off each other all the time. Sometimes we confirm what the other is hearing, other times we have completely different information

5) Keep in mind reporters get information from not just public facing people (players, coaches) but also those behind the scenes. The ones that the Jsteelz of the world connects with

6) Mainstream media is also limited by rules like "off the record" and "on background" that others are not

7) I don't know if Haslett left for any reason other than he knew his leash was very very short

Thanks.

Fair or unfair, I think its time for Morris to move on (which I think is paraphrasing of something you have said previously). For any number of reasons, this defensive (and coaching staff in general) need a clean sweep and for Gruden to sink or swim with folks of his choosing not remnants of past staff/FO choices.

SS, its probably been asked before, but I am just wondering if the level of rumor and innuendo that the Redskins garner in the media would be league average in your mind, or are there specific actors(disgruntled media, ownership people, etc) that make the snitch/rumor culture of the Skins even worse.

Another way to say it does DS/BA actively use gossipmongering more than other franchises, or are there media with such a large ax to grind that they will always post negative information at a higher rate than other franchises?

Yet they still hired him. So much for not wanting to tick off the fans.

I don't buy that theory much either. They were going to hire him all along. News got out before they wanted it to, they still wanted to talk to Fangio and they wisely did their due diligence, and in the end they went with plan A when it was obvious Fangio wasn't interested.

It makes perfect sense. Remember that report that they had hired Barry and shit hit the fan in terms of fan reaction? Quickly after you saw them retract that and interview Fangio and couple other people. Then put out a report that Vic didn't want to be in Washington. That way they can tell the fans...."see, look, we did everything we could to get in a good DC".....so back to Barry.

I don't think disgruntled media, ownership, etc is more here than it is elsewhere, or than it was before Snyder took over. And "dry snitching" isn't more so here either.

It just seems to garner a stronger reaction here from fans than in other places.

I can't stress enough though that the majority of the media (of course there's always the outlier) does not enjoy dealing with losing/bickering teams. Those who've never actually had to work in the media and regularly cover a team think this is what the media thrives on-controversy, losing, etc. That could not be further from the truth.

I believe it was just Ian Rapaport that initially said the deal was completed. Most everyone else said it was close and not a done deal. And a few said one reason it was not done yet was because the door was still open on a meeting with Fangio.

In other words, I think Fangio was on their list for a while. Well, we know it was. Were they genuinely interested in Fangio, or was it just a "fact finding mission"? I don't know

But in general I don't believe the Redskins should listen to fan sentiment. Fans are so proud of changing the Redskins' mind on proven HC Jim Fassel (a story that I think/know is way overblown), but what did that get us? Jim Zorn

yeah in all honesty I would have rather had Raheem go instead of Haz, IF I had to choose. I thought by getting rid of both of them we'd help ourselves out.

HOWEVER, is there any actual proof or credible source that says Raheem Morris is staying for sure? The whole staff is under reconstruction right now, has he been given a free pass?

I'd hope/think not, but the reactions on this board have me thinking he's been promoted or something....

After reading the available articles about Barry and Gruden's comments on the hire that the "Energy" he is looking for is not rah-rah energy. Gruden knows it is going to be a long hard road and wants a grinder who is loyal.

"He’s walking into a situation here where we’re going to have some adversity and I know he can handle it. He’s a tough guy, committed guy, a loyal guy, and I think he’s good fit for us"

There are reports that Raheem Morris is expected to join the Atlanta Falcons defensive staff. There are also reports that we have interest in bringing in Perry Fewell (former NY Giants DC) to replace Raheem as DB Coach. See sources below.

As bad as our DB''s have played the past 2 years, I'm not sure if it was Haz or Morris, so now that both are going, I feel better.

I will take my chance on what's behind door #2 over the "known" experience of the past 2 years.

Quinn & Morris go back a ways, so this is Quinn surrounding himself with people he trusts and is comfortable with. Nothing wrong with that- I would sure build my staff the same way.

Yeah, the go back to their Hofstra days. I still say Haslett was the problem, we can't blame the lack of talent Morris had to work with.
Yeah, the go back to their Hofstra days. I still say Haslett was the problem, we can't blame the lack of talent Morris had to work with.
Barry/Haz:

Richard Crawford was on 980 the other day discussing the differences in our D compared to San Diego's.

He basically said when he was here, under Haz, we ran a little bit of everything schematically. Jack of all trades, master of none (my interpretation).

In SD, he said the schemes were much simpler and fewer in number. Statistically, they were more successful than we were. I'm really not sure how much of a talent differential there was.

On certain plays, we had 4 or 5 professional football players that didn't seem to have a clue where they were supposed to be. No idea if this was related to the complexity of the defensive call. Depending on who you asked, safety or corner, there was or was not a communication issue.

When in doubt, simpler is better. Dallas had a talentless defense that was better than ours running the simplest scheme since the late 90s.

Barry will be an improvement over Haz.

Morris:

Cooley explained the other day that a position coach says "Sir, yes Sir" when a coordinator calls the defense; whether he agrees or not. Morris' role in the debacle this year is impossible to quantify unless you're in the meetings and on the sidelines. That being said, I hope we part ways. Sometimes change is good. Wish him the best.
